He was being petty. Which is a bad look. Plenty of games people went nuts for him when he played here. He knows that. It was clearly a bruise to his ego. He’s not a leader. He’s nowhere near Austin Mathews or McDavid. That was the final chapter last night. Hopefully Tuch n Krebs performance was an omen we have turned the page.

Statistically he's probably closer to Zibanejad than Matthews or Mcdavid.  He's Fringe top 10 to me

McDavid Draisaitl Matthews Crosby Mackinnon Barkov Point

Then you have Zibanejad, Lindholm, Aho, Kopitar, O'reilly, Duchene, Bergeron, Guentzel, Kadri, Hughes, TAGE! lol

He's in that 2nd tier to me.  His stats will get a boost playing with Stone next year

The risk wasn’t in recovering and getting back out on the ice. It was and still is what happens when he starts playing. The risk is still there.

ADR seems like a better option at this point. He didn't have any complications, and the treatment for re injury is usually fusion anyway.

the team did the same to him....turns out he was correct in wanting the surgery the Sabres didn't as he's recovered and playing

He wanted out before that. He made this a him vs. Them thing to force their hand and honestly I'm glad hes gone.  They're probably no closer to being a good competitive team than they were during his tenure, but they also don't seem much worse either.

In my opinion, there is a difference.  The fans in the crowd pay good money to watch the game.  The players, on the other hand, are paid (handsomely) to do their jobs.  Part of their job is to act as good ambassadors for their sport, at least it should be in an ideal world.  Many players do.

I paid to boo his ass. And his on ice body language alone made it worth it. When he turned it over and threw it out of the zone on a power play, the crowd went wild and that was the moment I knew that he was completely rattled. The presser was just the cherry on top!

As I said in my post when I got home last night, I didn’t boo or cheer because Eichel is just another player on another team at this point.

He got a rude welcome back to be sure,  but the same fans who booed him also gave a standing ovation during his tribute video.

Fans have every right to boo or cheer, regardless. Not sure why you feel the need to call them petulant and stupid for exercising that right. Are you so chaste and pure as the driven snow that you’ve never booed at a sporting event? Gimme a break.

I booed. Trade demands, the way he dragged the team with the injury thing... he was messy. Came off entitled and got his way. Boo!!!

Now we know booing worked, and hes all rattled?! Oh man I can't wait to boo even harder next year!

I believe if KA would have his druthers, he will bring in a couple more vets this off season and let Krebs, Paterka, and Quinn start the year with the Amerks.

Quinn could be the exception if he is just lights out in the pre season.

What are they learning in the AHL at this point?

From Marty Biron on the Instigators today:

    UFA Targets

    1.      Anton Forsberg – Ottawa, 29 years old,

    2.      Francouz – Colorado, 32 years old, not a ton of miles.

    3.      Spencer Martin – Vancouver, 27 years old;  Could be in AHL with Levi or Portillo.

       Trade targets

    1.      Husso, 27 (StL)

    2.      SEMYON VARLAMOV, NYI (32)

    3.      Raanta (32) injury issues.

    4.      Talbot (option from Duffer)

Stay away from Georgiev & Samsonov

Francouz would be my #1 - He just seems to have been consistently pretty good across 4 leagues. https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=115982

However... I'm sure other teams who aren't buffalo have noticed this as well so i think his market will be pretty good.

I think Husso is a free agent in 2022, but we'll probably pay him more than anyone else.  I'm a bit reluctant to sign blues backups after hutton though.  Even if Husso has looked really good this year.

Varlamov is an interesting thought - they almost have to move him to re-tool.

This is a much better role then becoming a goon.  I'm kinda hoping he continues to work on his O so that he can become a guy who can play up the lineup when needed and contribute.  With him, Tuch, Samuelsson, and Thompson, this team could become much more physically imposing.  I also like Dahlin's added feistiness.

I wish Murray was playing here right now over Bjork and Hayden.

Bjork needs to play more physically too.  He's not a big guy but if he wants to make this team next year he needs to forecheck with some authority, fight through traffic, get to dirty areas.  I doubt we'll see it so i hope he's an extra skater next year.

Hayden seems to have really low hockey IQ in the offensive zone, and i truly think he's only playing because he's alright in his own end unlike eakin and bjork.

Agreed, but I think because of the later development curve of the position, teams move on from them more than other positions. There are only 2 per team so moving on from 1 is a 50% turnover and if both don’t stick.

Most of the guys on your list showed signs of being an NHL starter fairly early on in their careers.

I still find it interesting that Washington has drafted 5 NHLers while Colorado has only 1.

Washington drafts a lot of goalies with a lot more draft capital.  A lot of the big contributors for colorado - Rantanen, Mackinnon, Makar, Landeskog were all top 10 guys.  You tend to not go goalie that high in the draft.  They also used a top 10 pick for Varlamov in 2012 who was their starter for like 7 years.  Then It was Grubauer for a 2nd.  Now Kuemper for a 1st.  They brought in Francouz.

Different strategies for sure, but Colorado is still always willing to use assets for goalies.  They just don't want to bother with the draft when they can trust their pro scouting to make good decisions.

Calgary have Dustin Wolf almost ready behind Markstrom. Vladar might be on the move in the offseason.

I would look at Francouz , Vladar  or Husso if he doesn’t want too much. Someone that can add some stability while the kids develop.

And I'd be willing to overpay, especially for Francouz.

I was curious and did some research on current goalies. This is not related to the Sabres goaltending issues but just random information.

I looked at background information on 75 goalies listed on team rosters. These are the guys that have played the most games for their teams. 75 equals 2.5 per team, I didn’t take every single one that has played. One who I included but hasn’t played is Carey Price.

Average round drafted-4th. Free agent signings were assigned an 8th round value.

28 of 75 are still on the team that drafted them. Lots of movement.

Washington has drafted 5 NHL goalies, Holtby, Grubauer, Vanacek, Varlamov and Samsonov. Decent list.

Chicago has drafted 4, Anderson, Raanta, Lankinen and Hutton. Meh.

Ottawa has drafted 4, Hammond, Elliott, Driedger and Lehner. Meh.

Pittsburgh also has 4, Fleury, Jarry, DeSmith and Murray.

    Colorado only has 1, Francouz.

    Detroit has 1, Mrazek.

    Edmonton 1, Koskinen.

    NY Isles 1, Sorrokin.

    Toronto 1, Reimer.

Vegas and Seattle have not been around long enough to matter.

Sabres have drafted 3, Ullmark, Peterson and Johansson.

Draft and develop is not a common practice with goalies from what I gather.

Sorry if this was a waste of your time but I thought I would share anyway.

TB has Vasilevskiy.  NYR have Shesterkin. STL has Husso/Binnington. MIN has Kahkonen. NSH has Saros.  ANH has Gibson.  Vancouver has Demko.  WPG has Hellebuyck.  CBJ has Merzlikins/Korpisalo.  DAL has Oettinger. PHI has Hart.

Plenty of teams have drafted and developed goalies to play where they're drafted.

The numbers back the eye test.

They are 331st out of 331 on expected goal % for combos with a minimum 100 minutes played!

Use the site and move the minute slider to 100 minutes.

I HATE watching these scrubs. It's unbelievable how low their collective hockey IQs are. They aren't completely overmatched skill wise, but the total lack of instinct and hockey smarts is off the charts. It's so frustrating to watch.

I personally love watching them dump it in, gain control on the wall and then pass it to a blank spot of ice, or the opponent.  Makes me think at 34, never having played hockey, that i still have a shot!

Last I looked it was nearly 50% above his career average. Obviously he’s improved this year, but my guess is, looking back on his hockey DB page in 5 years or so that this represents one of Tage’s best statistical seasons rather than the average

If you have a list of mid 6 Cs “routinely” (I’m taking that to mean average?) having shooting percentages in the teens, ie 13 and above, id be interested in seeing it. That’s not a challenge merely genuine interest

Its tough to use a career average for a player in his early 20s who was getting ice time on the 4th line the majority of time.  Obviously he's improved as well, but its hard to score when your linemates don't ever put the puck on your stick in position to score.  That and the RK style which basically lowered every shooters % below the mean (minus reinhart - who was boosted with 10 PP goals).

I'd guess all 3 were out for at least 1 if not 2 empty net goals

Not a great night from them overall

Tuch and thompson almost scored on a 2 on 1.  Then CBJ scored like 4 seconds later on a 2 on 1 after buffalo tried to change on the fly.

I feel like there was only 1 EN goal

I mean - technically.  The last goal the net was very empty, but Anderson was on the ice 😉

    Holy overreactions Batman!

Tokarski crapped the bed in the 3rd and OT. That is why they lost last night. That doesn’t mean they are years and years away from being decent and the organization is a joke and Pegula eats babies.

This year is a tear down, Eichel, Reinhart, Risto out the door. They aren’t making the playoffs, save your blood pressure and just exhale.

It's still very difficult to be optimistic about the sabres. There are some good young players for sure, but it remains to be seen if there's enough glue to actually be a good team.

not asking to splurge on a goalie...just one that can stop shots occasionally

Why not though? They literally splurge on nothing. Get a starter and carry UPL. Best man wins.

Still believe Murray's failing was more due to his being unable to see the human component to his players.  He seems to have completely discounted personality & chemistry in favor of pure physical assets.

He got the "talent" part right but completely failed at "chemistry."  Maybe that falls under your 2nd option, but would split hairs & say they are distinct.

Doug Whaley had many of the same issues IMO.  Brought in Watkins, karlos williams, Kouandjo, Henderson - then some of the guys who just weren't leaders or buy in guys like Gilmore Dareus and Mario Williams.  Between guys coming in with prior issues, and just general paycheck guys it was not set up for sustained success.

I wonder what happens if Anderson, UPL and Levi finish the season well.

UPL would almost certainly have a spot in Buffalo then. Levi will be one of the goalies in Rochester.

Would they bring in a Mrazek or Korpisalo type over signing Craig for another year?

If Craig wants to come back I'd have him. Especially with weird taxi squad rules in place.

Can do a lot worse for 750k... as we've seen...

KInda hate how Vegas got such a sweetheart of a deal and how they got to pick so many good players while Seattle did not...should be interesting in March when Vegas comes to Buffalo and Jack should be playing by then (unless he gets hurt before which would not be a big surprise either). Hopefully the team will rally around Anderson and win this one. I do really like both Tuch and Krebs and hopefully when Vegas goes to shed 5 mil in space they throw us another good player...

There were some good players exposed.  Domi, Namestnikov, Drouin, Duchene/Johansen, Voracek, Vanacek(who they traded back for a 2nd round pick), and Tarasenko.

Honestly - they were like 1 season further along and teams were able to plan more effectively than the Vegas one.  Teams also incented them heavily to take certian players which looking back was not wise.

Anaheim - to keep vatanen gave them theodore to take stoner.

Columbus - Gave up a ton to make them take Karlsson. Korpisalo and Anderson were who they protected.

Florida - Marchessault and Smith for a 5th round pick.

Minnesota - Tuch and Haula for a 3rd round pick. Protect Dumba.

Islanders - Brannstrom a 2nd and others to take Berube.  Brannstrom was the trade chip for Mark Stone.  They wanted to protect nelson and Dehan.

Winnipeg - Sent them the first they used on suzuki. That was the chip to get Pacioretty.

Some serious mistakes were made there.

I’ve been a Sabres fan since the early 2000’s. I love the team but know that they won’t be making the playoffs. Now I know that it’s impossible to love 2 teams the same. However, i’ve lost interest completely in hockey this year. I’m not sure if it’s just the Sabres hopelessness mixed in with the long drought or the fact that the Bills season just ended and I’m in a funk. But I’m looking for a team to follow this year once the playoffs start. I love the sport but get depressed when I think about it. I have a few possible choices in mind

    1. Rangers - they have Drury as their GM. Who doesn’t love Drury?

    2. Panthers - Much respect for Joe Thornton. He has been playing forever and still no championship.

    3. Golden Knights - I believe Jack Eichel wanted to stay in Buffalo but the team pushed him out the door. He’s a generational talent and I still like him.

    4. Canes or Predators - I like the energy that the fans in the building have in the playoffs. Don’t know much about the players.

    5. Whoever plays against Boston

    Does anyone else have suggestions?

    This is the way.

The fact that the time period displayed includes the worst continuous stretch of futility in this franchise's history cannot be coincidental.  Lack of talent, poor medical staff, and mismanagement from the top (and more?) are all contributing factors.  Since the same ownership controls the Sabres and Bills, and the Bills seem to "get it" in this area, emulating their approach and applying it to an ice hockey environment would seem to be a cost effective way to begin.

The bills make money... I'm not really sure the Sabres have during this entire stretch.  It's hard to justify millions of dollars in training staff, equipment, facilities - when it is hitting an already negative bottom line.  The stadium itself is probably among the worst facilities in the league as well.

Oh please...............he was a bust before the head shot. I don't hate the guy and I have nothing against him as a person, and I know he had a personal battle but the only thing that matters to me in these discussions is the decisions management makes and what ends up on the ice, and the simple fact is he was a bad signing.

Go on, be a fan, keep loving the crap that we've had for over a decade. Keep making excuses, keep on believing if it helps you sleep.

I mean... hes 4th on the team in scoring.  2nd in even strength assists.  The majority of his ice time has been played with girgs, murray, and cozens - not the thompsons, skinners, and tuchs of the team.  I'm not saying extend the guy but this season, he has NOT been the problem.
