Cozens needs a deep breath. He is pushing too much and his decision making is not fast enough. Reminds me of Quinn in the AHL last year where you see glimpses of the actual skill but it gets buried under the inability to make the simple quick plays and reads needed to succeed.

Yeah he's all over the place, he either loses t he puck at his own blue line, or passes to no one.  He's been a mess for a minute this year.

I’ve definitely fallen into just being told he’s a great prospect because I was never a fan … and now he’s someone I really want. Getting a big fast bust for Jack wouldn’t feel wonderful.

I think its basically because he's considered the #1 prospect there and vegas has been connected to Eichel multiple times.  It'll look like a loss if all they get out of it is mid to late first round picks.

I'm good with Krebs, or brisson or whatever as the big piece, and picks.  But what salary are they sending back, or is buffalo almost forced to retain salary?  Are they going to just LTIR him and activate him if they make the playoffs like Kucherov?  Or is it Reilly smith (Alternate captain, and pretty solid playoff performer)?  Tuch?  Some combination of other pieces - maybe Brossoit and stevenson?  Who does buffalo package with Eichel at a cheaper cost to actually play while he's hurt?  Hino maybe?

I look at it like, if i have to eat some salary - I'm wanting a top prospect, tuch, picks, and probably brossoit (Selfishly, this would be insurance as to never having to see aaron dell play hockey with Buffalo)

Yes, Krueger did not have any answers to the stated triumvirate that doomed the team to 31st place and what you describe are symptoms of that.  But, give last year's team a healthy Eichel from day 1, an Ullmark that can play the full season rather than missing a month or so, and have the Devils on the schedule mid-Feruary rather than when Covid was ripping through their roster and even being coached by the last guy, that team was better than NHL 0.500 and cursing the fact they got slotted into the toughest of the 4 divisions by far.

Long run, those issues might be blessings in disguise as they significantly changed the team's direction or they were the catalysts to start a 3rd rebuild in 7 or so years when the rebuild was unnecessary.

Yeah.  He seemed to move anyone from any line except hall-eichel.  And it was pretty plain to see that they didn't mesh well enough.

Covid pause & the associated lingering effects.  Ullmark's injury.  Eichel being unable to further battle through injuries.  The unholy trifecta that completely derailed a start that was off-pace, but not by much, last season.

The absurdly low shooting percentages - likely a symptom of the problem of not driving the net, and not screening enough.  The other issue you didn't mention - 25+ for risto per night, and skinner playing 13 minutes a night on assorted random lines.

Skinner had 3 points under Krueger in 25 games, and 11 points in 28 games under Granato.

Okposo had 4 points under Krueger in 23 games, and 9 points in 12 games under Granato.

I watch Barzal play and I prefer him to Eichel.  Ok, Eichel has more offensive skill, but Barzal plays a very good two way game and scores too.

I always felt that way about Barkov.  Just a complete player who always looks in control.

The worse trade in the modern NHL is the Seth Jones trade.

They moved down in the first (essentially cole sillinger who is playing in the NHL right now for nolan allen), and gave up another 1st (looking like the 2023 one with how bad they've played) and 2nd (2022).  They also gave up a young defenseman in the deal (Boqvist), and made seth jones one of the highest paid defensemen in the league despite never winning a Norris while also coming off a poor season.

You aren't wrong here... this looks brutal.  If Jones doesn't begin to play significantly better it'll look even worse.

30M tied up in kane, toews, jones.  Very top heavy - and like all their prospects are playing up with the big club.  And Nylander still can't hack it with them.

he did, but mostly I'm impressed with Hagg. idk why Philly gave up on him but at this point he's playing as good as, probably better than Risto did and we got draft picks along with him in that deal so for the moment, that stands as KA's greatest achievement.

I remember reading something about him being disappointed with his play in Philly, and wanted to use this as an opportunity to become a better player.

I agree with you that there isn't going to be a quick return for a contribution from Levi. My guess would be 2-3 yrs. down the road. The shame of the Reinhart saga is that he could have been secured a couple of years ago. It's like taking a step forward only to then take two steps back. What was surprising is that it appears that that Risto returned more assets than Reinhart did. I would never have predicted that.

I'm just happy they are adding goalies for the future.

The Tale of Two Hockey Franchises

    Monday's Matchup:

The Lightning and the Sabres are playing their first of three meetings this season and the first of two at KeyBank Center...Tampa Bay and Buffalo are meeting for the first time since a 6-4 Lightning win Dec. 31, 2019 in Buffalo, a game in which the Bolts scored five-unanswered goals to overcome a 4-1, second period deficit...The Lightning have won seven in a row over the Sabres, outscoring Buffalo 30-19 over that stretch, the Bolts' last loss coming in a 2-1 defeat in Buffalo Nov. 13, 2018...Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Bolts own a 23-4-2 record versus Buffalo...Lightning head coach Jon Cooper is 23-5-2 all-time versus the Sabres...The Bolts are 13-3-1 in Buffalo since the start of the 2011-12 season...Pat Maroon is on a six-game point streak vs. Buffalo (4-3--7 pts.)...Anthony Cirelli (1-3--4 pts.) and Steven Stamkos (0-3--3 pts.) each have an active three-game assist streak vs. Buffalo...Andrei Vasilevskiy is on a five-game win streak vs. Buffalo (14 total goals allowed) and is 8-0-1 over his last nine starts against the Sabres (19 total goals allowed).

Ugh - i was at that NYE game.  At least i got to see 10 goals?  I once went to a 0-0 tie against the rangers that featured a single shootout goal.

If only the Sabres had a talented RHD they spent years developing who plays a physical game that would pair perfectly with Dahlin.  Losing Borgen will never not be a problem for me.

I just don't see it.  He's 25, has played 14 games, and wasn't particularly good in them.  He's never scored a point in the NHL.  Maybe he's a late bloomer, but everything about him suggests he's a bottom pairing guy.  Not someone I'd pair with my best player.

Would've been nice to get something for him - but they got significantly more for risto/reinhart than they would have for borgen, so they made the right move.   Protecting him by trading a player with a pick then also comes with the loss of a prospect (also, seattle didn't do this with any team in the league).  They also basically replaced borgen in the lineup with pysyk (whos probably better today), and actually saved money somehow.

What would you have done differently?

Depends on what is broken... you have 8 bones in your wrist... Scaffoid is most common break... though they could be confusing it with distal radius which is not technically part of the wrist.  They can put a screw in if it need stabilizing... 6-8 weeks seems like a long time... bet he starts shooting again at 4 weeks but doesnt fully feel better til 6 weeks out... if that is truly what is going on.

Did it get confirmed broken?  Nothing out there on twitter etc.

Holy *****!  They left him in for 8 goals against?  And he didn’t skate to the bench, glare at the coach, and demand a trade?

I think he'd have to demand he be sent to the minors.  But in all seriousness... 8?  That's like leaving your starting pitcher in for like 15 runs.  He also already probably had no confidence, how much more can you damage it?

There may be nights when the team won't be able to give That much motor, or they simply get outplayed by better talent in the league, but if they can keep this up 8/10 games, we could make a run.

The wild card will be the GT situation, Anderson isn't a young lad and I'm not sure Toker can keep us together in a more expanded role, should anything happen.

Tonight def peaked my interest a lot more than I expected it to.

Someone on twitter was like - Montreal was on a back to back....

It's the 2nd game of the season.

I made an effort to focus on Skinner in this game. Your description of how he played is spot on. The determined effort to play a two way game was in stunning contrast to his usual loose and floating style of play. As you noted although the stat sheet doesn't indicate it he played well. What this game showed me is that the player cares and coaching matters.

I liked how active sticks were in the neutral zone, just pressuring in general.  I feel like we constantly gave up the zone last season.  And when we did give up the zone in this one they put more sustained pressure on buffalo.

Jack played for an inept organization that constantly turned over its staff. The situation was unstable since he got here. It seems to me that this new staff is establishing a coherent plan and direction for this franchise. That didn't exist pre-injured Jack. If you look at how differently the team played for Granato compared to the previous coach/coaches you can see how important order and coherency are.

Despite what the majority of people believe for me it would be wonderful to see a healthy Jack playing for Granato. Within a year or so Quinn, Peterka, Samuelsson and Power will be added to the roster mix. If you add a healthy Jack to the lineup you can see the makings of a robust roster.

But he won't... so we can probably limit eichel comments to the 300 page thread about trading him.  He'll never play here again.

Them waiving Axel Foley and not picking anyone up off of waivers is a real head scratcher. It begs the question, "Why?".

His name is Cody... Cody EAAAAKIN

Sorry, Any given sunday was on cable on friday night and his name works with that willie beamon song.

lol, true, but to make a good Barre-Boulet you do need seafood so he's in the right town.

Don't understand why Sabres wouldn't grab this guy. Even in a tank plan this would have been a good zero risk pick up. This team is just dumb.

I don't think you can send him down for the season if you claim him.  Once the S hits the F this year, i think they want the roster flex?

So we gave up Zadarov, Compher, the Selke/Calder/Stanley winning ROR for Thompson and Johnson.

Well... They also had ROR for 3 years.  So... Zadorov and Compher for 3 years of ROR.  Teams have given up similar returns for 1 year rentals honestly.

The ROR trade was clearly pretty bad, but it's not "finished" yet.  Johnson could end up being a solid top 4 dman or something for the team for 10 years, we really have no idea.

I'm not sure we lost the Colorado vs. Sabres trade.  They basically got two depth players (Compher and Zadorov), a 3rd pairing D and a 3rd line Forward while we got ROR, a bona fide top 25 NHL center and a two way force who performed very well for us.

Obviously incompetent management failed to build a team around him and Jack and lead to us getting killed in the ROR to Stl trade.  Like Colorado, we'll likely end up with a 3rd line forward (Thompson) and a 2/3 pairing D (Johnson).

The rule of he who gets the best player in the deal usually wins the deal hold true for both ROR trades.

Odds are once Jack is dealt we'll likely see similar results unless we get a Krebs, Zegras, or Lafreniere back in the deal.

I liked how the guy put it.  It isn't the total trainwreck that its made out to be... yet.  Thompsons obviously been a dud, but he's still relatively young so there is some unknown there.  And Johnson hasn't played yet so its hard to call him a failure.

No more tanking.  Build the team to improve every year.  Value ensemble play.  Value team defence.  Value team offence.  Create a sound foundation and build from it.

Agreed.  But the team was the worst team in the league last year, and they have since jettisoned 3 of the top 7 scorers on the team (4 if you include Eichel who is likely to either not play or get traded).  To expect them to be anywhere above the bottom group of the league would be unfair to the team.

    Reasons to be optimistic:

Better schedule - new teams to play, probably easier when you consider the division buffalo played in a year ago

Better defensemen - I think the group they have is built to more effectively move the puck in the style granato wants.  Risto was a lot of things, but accurate passer was not one of them.  Pysyk is probably a steal at that contract as well.

Better Goaltending - They lost ullmark, but he played less than half the games last year - and i truly think anderson/dell/UPL are upgrades over johansson, Hutton, tokarski, houser

Healthier - I don't know that they can be less healthy than a team that loses like 4 or 5 goalies, their star center, and half the team to covid.

I don't think they'll be the worst team in the league, but they should be in the conversation.

So that would be 7 contract years dried up after this one, but he's still RFA at the end, right? I don't think the first year, that burned a year on his ELC, counts towards the 7 needed to achieve FA?

I thought that burned a year off the ELC - does it get them to UFA faster too?  I never really understood it.

They do this crap in baseball too, where prospects get called up in like August to save a cheap year.
