That was definitely a balanced roster. Old and young and it had role players as well.

Sadly, there is one possibility that no one wants to think about. It is POSSIBLE that in this era where players have lots of NTCs and get to express their wishes more and control their own destinies, we have been bad for so long it truly is the case that basically NO ONE wants to come to Buffalo and so he offers and tries but there's just no options and no takers. So the only guys he can get are over paying a guy like Clifton over 3 times what he was making (an offer too good to refuse so to speak) or an old guy nobody wants any more who decides to take a fat payday for his retirement fund.

It's not something anyone here wants to believe is a reality, but it just might be.

Sad, but true.  But even then, you can overpay a little bit for guys like Greenway to fill out the bottom 6 or overpay a bit in a trade.  If the stable of prospects is that all-fired good, IMHO, we should overpay a bit to get the guys we need.

Seems that tomorrow is Zegmus Girgs....... 30th birthday.

Quite the milestone.  He is by far the longest currently sentenced Sabre.  He has been through everything, but winning.  Good luck to him.  Happy Birthday !!  We promise you a parade one day.

He is also known Zemgus.  Details, details ...

    "...currently sentenced Sabre....". Awesome. 🤣

I've mused on it before - has GMKA's plan (right or wrong - I am not endorsing anything, just speculating on what it might be) been to actually establish a position of strength? What was it, like 3 yrs ago at rookie/development people were all hard over some agitator guy as "the best prospect" and I am not even sure that dude is still playing hockey ... point is, the cupboard was bare AF not that long ago, it is not like KA has been stashing away prospects for years and years.

BTW, not directed at you Marvin, just a good post to which I could reply to further my personal agenda 🙂

Good question.  Filling the cupboard really should only be a means to an end.  My perception is that GMKA is too enamoured with his prospects to make a necessary mood.  What is frustrating is that he seems to be aware of the flaws in the team, so why did he not make the moves in the summer?

First. I did not think we need to overreact and blow everything up again. Things might have gone better than expected last year, so then this was the year when all the misstakes and bad plays are appearing, Ducks third goal the other evening was this season in a nutshell. For me it was not unexpected and I am convinced that they will turn things around and make the play off next year even if KA would not make one single trade.

Then. I started thinking some steps further. Do we want to be a team that just make it to the play offs (like Leafs), or do we want to be a serious contender? Do we have players that can make Sabres a contender? That can be Conn Smythe winners?

No we do not have those type off players.

I would not want this team to be blown up again. Is there any way to become a contender without doing that?

We can always swap out from excesses of strengths (fast, skilled forwards) to shore up weaknesses (stay-at-home 1-2 RHD, grittier forwards, veterans overall).  For instance, there was no need for Botterill to trade Ryan O'Reilly to alter locker room chemistry; just shipping out Bogosian and Kane was enough.

  5. What does it mean when I would rather watch bad Sabres hockey over another second of 2024 election news?  I used to follow both with some intensity.  Now, the Sabres are sometimes borderline unbearable -- but I find it preferable to just the news, especially the election.

  6. One issue that puzzles me.  We have effectively season-long slumps from our top 4 forwards (Thompson, Skinner, Tuch, Cozens) and our top 3 defencemen (Dahlin, Samuelsson, and Power).  Yes, some of their problems are injury-related, but finding an answer to this question would help in deciding what to do.  For instance, maybe they just over-achieved the last couple of seasons, in which case we should sell high on at least a couple of them.  Maybe it just happens (e.g., there is an abbreviated Buffalo-Winnipeg game on YouTube from 1985-6 where the HNIC announcers mention that the Winnipeg Jets were plunging in the standings because their top 3 marksmen, Hawerchuk, McLean, and Steen, all had an off-year), in which case a new voice gives a new positive vibe (head coach).  Maybe the lack of different skills on the team has been exploited by the other coaches.

I place the initial responsibility on the assistant coaches.  The next comes with a mix of the head coach, players, and general manager.  I would attack this problem in that order if possible.

  7. Something quasi-positive.

I have a few friends from grad school at Michigan State (you probably know it as "the other university in Michigan") who have suffered through the ignominy of an 0-16 season (after a 5-0 preseason, no less).  They remind me of us in the late 1980's or after the Bills' drought.  Their innocence is kind of fun to me.

  8. I just wanted to say that I hate that this thread is relevant before even the All Star Break.  I have been growing more and more resentful of The Tank each year.  And it hurts more so this year because last year ended with such promise.

    You SURE about the bolded?

Botterill famously said that if the Sabres were to win the Dahlin lottery it would make retooling (not positive of the exact word he used and too tired to bother looking it up at this point in time) much easier to do.  That seemed cryptic to yours truly when it was said, but when O'Reilly was dealt, it sure seemed a lot clearer what he'd meant by that.

Moreover, actual reporters were hearing from GMs that O'Reilly was available before that season's trade deadline.

What's the difference? At the time I didn't like it, but I'm trying to look back on it objectively.

Since they won a cup I'd guess Blues fans actually think it was their best trade ever and they couldn't care less about Tage Thompson.

They view it as the ripoff of the century.  They unloaded two pieces of dead weight for a 1C without giving up anything significant.  Tage Thompson getting good now still does not change the fact that dumping O'Reilly was an idiotic move that lead to more years of sub-mediocrity.

I'm not sure that's true. If I remember correctly St. Louis needed to shed salary as part of it, hence the two veterans who they didn't deem essential to their future. Sabres took what they could get. A body to take ROR's place (or so they thought), some futures and a throw in they thought could help defensively. They may have said any BS at the time, but I really doubt they thought they were "improving". Just getting the best they could.

Fortunately, Tage has made the deal palatable. If he'd been a bust then I'd say it was the worst trade ever for sure, but he's not.

Your memory is how Blues fans view the ROR trade.

I somewhat recently heard Granato say that the principal difference between this year's team and last year's team is the power play. That the even strength goals are about the same.

    Is this true?

It's incredible to me that there's been no change with the assistant coach who's responsible for the power play.

Not at all.  As designed, the power play has few variations in configurations, set-ups, modes of attack, and targets.  If even I can figure it out and dream up schemes to disrupt it, surely a pro coach can do better.  Until it evolves or the Sabres create new variations to run, I expect the power play to underperform.
