Ya, I grew up in Hamilton and fondly remember my dad making me the backyard rink. That was a long time ago and I don't think that's easy to do any more around there. Generally not cold enough any more.

Lived in Ottawa for a while and skated on the canal. They rarely open that any more either. ice too thin and unstable now.

My nieces, nephews, etc. find the idea of skating on a frozen back yard locally or skiing to the grocery store to be virtually inconceivable because winters are so warm now.  I think they are really missing out.

Serious question for the Hockey Smart Spacers:

What ‘system’ is Donnie playing with this team? I just don’t see structure to their game. This is not a beat down on Donnie.

I seriously have been trying to understand what the desired system looks like when done well. I mean, last year lots of scoring, Defense & Goalies let in ton o goals. This year focus on D supposedly, now back to focus on Offense (I know best Defense is a good Offense….supposedly).

    EDJUMIKATE ME PLEASE.

I will study a bit harder tonight.  I thought that I had a handle on it earlier in the year, but I think they sometimes have executed so badly that I get confused.  It would be different if I were at the game sitting in either section 313 or 327 so that I could really study it.

  3. My health and my job prevent me from following hockey as much as I would like.  The Sabres' seemingly routine setbacks have taken a toll on my patience with the franchise.  The treatment I got at the games from some fans during The Tank soured me on going to games very often.  I still want them to win, but the passion has dissipated.

This year is worse than the last 2 years because I was starting to like this team, yet here they are disappointing us again.  They are still beset with problems.  I know they need to fix the assistant coaches at least and get a different blend of personnel on the ice.  Until that happens, I guess I should just keep doing what I am doing.

I went snowboarding with my nephew and his buddy on Sunday. At one point, they said, "We're old for being on this mountain'..."

I don't remember the exact context, but it made me feel old (and yet, kinda good.)

Two days later, reading a story that Jake Guentzel will be 30 years old next season, made me feel really old.

In an old episode of Magnum, p.i. one of the characters said something like "you know you're old when the most familiar players are younger than you are and they are considered old."

    This was about turning 40.

    Very cool Marvin.

The music scene before the Beatles is very well documented in records, now almost  all transferred to digital, and in movies and books.  I am a huge fan of jazz music that came out before I was born.

If you remember the moon landing then at least a portion of Civil Right's movement should be a part of your memory too.

There is a mindset that comes with experiencing the passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act that I don't truly understand.  It is like how I understand the import of Watergate better than even my youngest siblings.

The late John-Nathan Turner, who was a producer for Doctor Who, once told me that, "'Please Please Me' wasn't just novel; it was earth-shattering."  JNT said that, to his mind, only the Kennedy Assassination and the Moon Landing had that impact on the mindset of the culture Post-WWII.  I wish that my musical experience had that.

If they don't overpay, don't sell. It won't be an NHL player because they're gunning for the playoffs and they need someone big before the deadline.

Let's say we get two decent picks from Greenway. Great. Sign one or two hulk UFAs on short term in the offseason (Martin, Lucic, Clutterbuck, Maroon, etc). Package the picks and a player/prospect for a one or two top 4 Dmen.

    Profit.

What is your definition of "decent" picks?  I think that you are under-selling him for that price.

I would rather add more Greenway types than subtract them.  Indeed, I would be looking at nearly NHL-ready prospects who play a Greenway type game so that injuries don't hurt as much next season.  I am also loath to trade Greenway on one end and obtain a lesser player on the other end.

No one is selling a top 4 RHD for a player and prospect unless he is a UFA.  I don't think that is feasible.

More so to protect the young guys.

I do like him as a player. He brings grit to our team (which we don't have) and he can become our pk specialist (which sucks bigtime).

Moving him requires that we get something very good back. The assumption is that the Canucks are willing to overpay us. If so, it makes sense because we get more value added. Plus, we might turn around and re-sign him once he's a UFA.

If we do move him, we will have to replace his grit and toughness, which we should already be looking into (bye KO, Girgs). Big strong, slow forwards are a dime a dozen in the UFA market, and we can find a few if we look hard enough.

    It's purely a value move.

If Canucks fans are to be believed, they think that Vancouver won't overpay.  Their assumption is that Buffalo is looking for picks and projects.  No top 4 RHD, gritty forwards, or Thatcher Demko. Currently available players and prospects do not interest me one jot.

By the end of the first half, we can:

    1. Reasonably ascertain that we corrected too late for a playoff spot.

and 2. Judge results that have already been witnessed.

Neither of the two comments I was responding to had the benefit of actual data, or even historical perspective.

Following up on your first point: if we go 6-0 on the upcoming homestead with ordinary luck otherwise, we still would not be in a playoff spot.

Maybe Adams is genius. If both UPL and Levi round out into above average goalies it will be like KA was right all along.

I would say that Adams got lucky, but, as a Sabres fan, I can live with it should they keep it up.

I think Olofsson has made a concerted effort to round out his game and you can see it when he plays, but my impression is that, to Kevyn, it's too little, too late and the Sabres ready to move on.

That was mentioned in an article that I think was in Buffalo Hockey Beat.

  11. Just as people much younger than I am envy me because I can remember the moon landing, I wish that I knew what the music scene was like before the Beatles, and I wish that I could appreciate better the sacrifices of my elders in the Civil Rights movement.

I'm 42, but I love classic TV and movies.

I felt old in here when I understood the following M*A*S*H exchange between two other posters (I'm sorry that I can't remember who they were):

    A: Whatever, Winchester.

B: I've always thought of myself as Trapper John.

    A: You wish.

    Welcome to the board!

Yeah, with the Bills and Fish having the last game of this weekend, you have to figure the winner will definitely get a Sunday game next weekend and the other one SHOULD get one also.  (Presuming both are in the playoffs this year.)

IMHO, you overestimate the intelligence and integrity of the NFL.
