I’m not being dismissive.  How do you distill 50-100 player and coach interviews since camp began to one sound bite?

However, after listening to these interviews one comes away with a distinct impression that the guys on the team look to Dahlin for leadership.

I agree.  Here is how I see it: Along with the Old Men, Okposo, Girgensons, and Eric Johnson, Dahlin is the only defenceman that forwards mention with respect to his actions and Tuch is the only forward whom the defencemen mention with respect to his actions.  My inference is that they are the only 2 younger players that have some command of the whole room.

And they are trying to make the jump to the bigs seamless by teaching the same system as the big club. Lol what system ? Sorry not sorry.

Sadly, the way I figured out what the defencive system is to watch what they try to do when they are successful.  That gets you the thumbnail sketch.  Then, when the omnipresent breakdown occurs, ask yourself, "if the guys knew what they were doing, how would they have avoided that gaffe?"  Put them together and you can deduce their defencive system.

Sad but true -- figuring out the system by negative inference is a first in my book.

There is a part of me that wonders what it will take to get proper defence through players' skulls.

I could see Pegula selling 40-45% of the team and letting that person take over the day to day operations oversight.

Assuming that his daughters still feel the same way, I think that they don't want him too.  They wanted the Cup wins to be like family heirlooms.

Aside 1: Are there talks about Granato getting better assistants?  PP coach would be a great place to start.

Aside 2: I personally can tell what Granato is trying to do on defence, which should eventually work.  Why is it trouble in the NHL club and a massive disaster often in Rochester?  I know youth is part of it, but it should not be this bad.  I find it hard to believe that it is so common for players to not be aware of their defencive positioning, assignments, and reads.  The players are often so clueless that it is as if this is the first time that the players had to cover their own zone.

Unfortunately I have tickets to about 12 more games this season so yeah what choice is there?  Sell them I guess and try to reclaim 50 cents on the dollar.  Absolutely not renewing if no playoffs.  Same as all the other years, I'll shift back to just being a fan of the game and will still probably watch NHL most nights, just with less emotional investment.

    Welcome back.

This year really looked better, but missing 2-4 top 6 forwards for most games exposed the lack of depth.  That is aside from the team still learning to play defence while the offence is suffering.

With our now-constant access to terrible news from all over the globe, sports definitely don't seem as important as they used to be in Buffalo.

I've always said that if the Bills and/or Sabres win it all, they should let the victory parade crowd destroy all the bricked up buildings in the area.

Welcome to the board.  And awesome.

  6. Some of the joy got sucked out of me with the decision for The Tank.  I am philosophically opposed to it.  I also did not like the animosity from fans at games because I was rooting for them to win.  It still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and it caused me to stop trying to watch all of the games.

The long drought has been made worse by the sometimes unwatchable play.  That put the damper on my already waning enthusiasm for this team.

My health took a hit with long COVID, so I find myself sleeping through games that I might otherwise have watched or attended.  I don't know how much more interested and passionate I would be if my health improved.

This season has been a big disappointment, but I am hoping that as the roster gets healthier, then the performance will improve.  The horrid drafting before GMKA really shows in the lack of depth.

The sad part is Jost, Krebs, KO, and Z are all former 1st rd picks.

KO is just old.  Krebs has some growing to do (I hope).  Z turned himself into a checker because that was what he figured that he needed to do to stay in the league.  Jost is a marginal NHLer.

We need to remember that the hit rate for 1st round picks plummets from pick 1 rather quickly -- and I am using "hit rate" rather loosely here.

The bottom six of our forward group is abysmal.

The holes in the bottom of the line-up are the product of years of sub-mediocre drafting after the 1st round.  This team can barely tolerate 1 forward injury, let alone 4.

I hate to say it, but assuming there are not any more injuries once Tuch, Quinn, Greenway, and Girgensons come back, then Okposo should be, um, "load-managed."  Also, even after sending Murray back down, we would still be 2 over the roster limit.  I recommend sending Krebs and Bryson down.

  9. Under Ruff, when the PP failed to click with Briere, Drury, Connolly, et al., he did some subtle and not-so subtle things to help it out.  I recall that he had an all-LH PP and an all-RH PP for a while and goaltenders took a while to figure out that they needed to subtly adjust their positioning.  For another set of games, he had two players in the high and low slot to give a passer on the boards more than one option.  He also had the PP attack from different directions in the zone.  They need some creative thinking other than the 1-3-1 alignment because they seem to be incapable of breaking down the discipline of the defenders' box.

Shouldn't the captain be the first person stepping forward to do what is best for the team? It should come from Kyle or does it come down to DG making it happen?

The last person to know that a player is finished is the player himself.

    Did he end up graduating?

Baby steps but I am liking the way they played, they need to stay at that level for a bit to get me back to not needing as much hopium.
