I am still holding out hope that there will be two changes to a blueline that sucked last year...and I'm not talking about Borgen becoming #7, or even worse, the two scrubs just signed make the team.   I was hoping for two of McCabe, Risto, Miller & Montour being moved out, and the blueline rebuilt.

Same boat.  Looking more like this is not happening.  If our D and goaltender is not upgraded I don’t think any other improvements in the forward ranks matters.

  2. Pencil me in with so many others that just want to see a change.  Not sure what he did to deserve the AAV (38% raise) and term.   If KO isn’t bought out this team will have a fourth line making $9.0-$10m for 4 consecutive years.  After Dahlin gets his deal you’re going to squeeze the middle six.  Is the depth in our prospect pool that bad that by 2022 someone couldn't  conceivably replace Z on the PK or his TOI on an ELC?

How is this any worse than not qualifying Robin Lehner?

People give Botterill a pass there because of the mental health issues, but it was clearly the wrong decision; an off-season of rehab, he was was back on top of his game immediately.

How is his situation any different than if he had finished 2018 playing poorly due to a chronic shoulder injury?

Not sure this is true.  He was motivated in a one year prove it deal with the NYI and played well, or shall I say the team in front of him played better than the Sabres had in the previous three years.   The fact that the best opportunity in front of him yielded a $1.5M AAV, far less than his QO in Buffalo would have been indicates what ALL GM's thought of his value at the time.   The fact JB may have been privy to more  of his outside hockey problems only confirms the right decision was made.   Other factors to consider - he was seen rightly or wrongly, tied to a horrible trade losing a valuable first round pick in 2015, and Linus was progressing in his own right and probably was deserved of his own opportunity.   JB's decisions were mostly indefensible.  Not this one.

  4. Are those Hammy's trophies from when he was a Pee-Wee hockey star?   I'm going with the ONLY acceptable hardware for a former player over the age of 60 in their "DIG ME" room is National Championship (collegiate) or some kind of professional All-star/Selke/Cy Young-like award.   Jesus - can't these guys take a call from their kitchen or dining room?

Here's the burning question I'm left with after watching the first 8 min of the presser:  is @john wawrow  better dressed or worse dressed than the average SabreSpacer at this point in the quarantine?

With all due respect, I don't think that is the question.  (Although I might guess equal).   The real question is how can you show up to an external Zoom call with the GM of the Sabres in your f*c&ing bath robe, T-shirt and looking completely unkempt.   It's not April 5th and your first Zoom meeting amigo.  It's October 5th, and surely you must have developed some guidelines for these type of meetings.  I have plenty of days where I can join an internal call (not on camera) and dressed in lounge wear.  However if I showed up to a business call looking like that I can guarantee I would be reprimanded.  Nor would I disrespect my Customers by doing so. Unacceptable!

  6. Could be a great signing by year 3.   With 2021 uncertainty Tage wanted a little something to "wet his beak", so he offered up the extra year.  Good on both sides.

My initial reaction is that it’s too much and Tage hasn’t proven squat.

But.........it is 3 years.  It’s a bet on the player.  1 or 2 years from now they could have a 20+ goal scorer for $1.4M.  I don’t think it means they have him penciled into the top 6 or anything.

Does anyone know if this is a 2 way deal?

    Does not appear to be.

  8. In 2019 JB made three trades in or around Draft Day/Free Agency.  How many will KA make?   I feel like the organization has pressure to bring in more than just Staal.   I also believe in #cleanslate so I'll say 4 more deals are done between now and October 17th.  None will include the eighth overall.  Vegas over-under has it set at 2.5 (not including the Staal deal).

Nah, I don't care. I just acknowledge that he is (more was, but still a little bit) a good hockey player with an edge to his game that helps win games. Every winning line up needs some guys like that on it.

Amazing how the stench of a bad contract can change the perception of a player.   Perry played in my backyard, and all we heard from the local paper/media was he should retire and the GM should be fired for giving such a bad contract.  (Sound familiar?)  The Ducks will still be hamstrung by the buyout for three more years.   But without a looming cap hit, and playing for $1.5m this season,  the narrative has changed, and the player can actually exceed expectations.  And he has exceeded all expectations.

My comment was for the person I quoted. He does that to me all the time so I just returned the favour.  A little playful turnaround is fair play sort of thing. But to your point,

I agree the middle is weak and we have no depth. Depending on who they sign I'm not even sure we have a 4th line any more and we might need a RW on the 2nd line. That's all definitely true. But,

I also think that both Skinner and Reinhart are over valued by the fan base. On a Stanley Cup capable team they would be 2nd line talent and not 1st line. First line would have to be better than that or we wouldn't be there in that cup.

But would they be there if they hadn't lucked into Point?

Well we know they would still have Miller if they didn’t have to sign him last summer.  So with him and Stamkos, sure.

  11. What is most impressive with this TB line up is the mix of low draft picks & undrafted players at the Center and Foward positions.  I do not think there is one of the 12 starting who were drafted in the first round (Stamkos - not playing).  And they have 3 undrafted starters.  I don’t think any of the final 8 teams had less than three first rounders and a few had six. It speaks to the lack of draft and development with the Sabres organization.  How many third round and lower will contribute this year or next?

Bobby Ryan's apparently going to be bought out. I wonder if he'd be worth taking a chance on with a (relatively) cheap contract? A gamble, but he might have something to prove and add to a 3rd line.

    that's a blutarsky....zero - point - zero

Elvis, sure, no interest in Wennberg. Also I'd try to put Hutton in a deal for Elvis otherwise... we bury him in the minors. NO BUYOUTS

I was an advocate of the Carter buyout earlier this year, but with Covid and players looking at a 20% escrow in 2021 it makes no sense.  If he was bought out, the contract would not be subject to escrow so he receives 2/3's of his $2.75M salary.   Savings of roughly $907K for the Sabres ownership.  But his real salary will be closer to $2.2M with escrow.  So the difference is only $400k.  I've been in the camp of trading Hutts for MAF and seeing if we can get something in return.

The Bills dominated the Jets. Only you and Gregg Williams think they barely won.

They dominated elements of the game including TOP and Total yards.  The over arching point is that the Bills are not under-rated and NE is not over=rated.  They look like 9 win teams, and seem to be on equal ground.  And I'm using the performance against a common opponent and what I've seen in the other games they have played.  I'm hoping this changes as our Offense continues to improve.

I don't think many had them being good.  So I'm not sure they are "rated".  The Bills are still underrated though.

Vegas had both NE and the Bills with win totals of 9.  I think the narrative of a Patriot collapse and tanking this year was not broadly accepted.  Buffalo has shown improvement in the passing game but barely won both games. NE kept it close against a good Seahawks team while on the road. In my mind Vegas has it right,  again.  Equally matched.  Cannot wait for those two head to head games.

Hey after this over and I head out there will drop you a pm.  My Dad lives up the Hill from Mission St Louis Rey off Ranch Del Oro

You as well Broken... either of you guys skate out at twin rinks in Escondido?

I moved out here in the 90's after college.  Haven't skated (outside of taking my kids at Christmas to an outdoor rink in Irvine) in over 30 years.  Tried surfing for a while.  Most of the unmarried types were playing golf and basketball so I never went back.   I would embarrass myself.   Now I'm just too damn old.
