100%. Social media in general is to blame for the downfall of society. It’s not about being there, it’s about showing everyone that you’re there. I recently deactivated my Facebook because it’s just a toxic place now that the election is “over”. Just so much hate and hostility...

  2. One of the greats.  His role as Jim Malone in The Untouchables was brilliant.
“You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way! And that's how you get Capone.”

On paper, w/ the exception of fixing the GT which my expectation is it still gets accomplished, he has addressed all the roster To Do items (some significantly better than others):

    1. Upgrade 2C - check

    2.  Upgrade GT - Still Outstanding

    3.  Bring in top 6 W - Massive check

    4.  Upgrade PK - need to see result to 2 above, but through Eakin, Reiter, & to a degree Hall, it has been addressed & likely upgraded

    5.  Get better option at 3C than Johansson - check

    6.  Improve depth at LHD - check, though not impressively

    7.  Re-sign the RFA's - check (minus Kahun, but not sure where he fits here post Hall signing)

    8.  Re-sign UFA's that Krueger wants - addressed & likely check (depends on whether he wanted Larsson back, but doubt Larry wanted to be back)

    9.  Improve PP units - check

    10.  Restock Ra-cha-cha - started, still work in progress.

    11.  Don't squander future assets for all this - check

    12.  Don't squander cap space unnecessarily - IMHO check. (Hall's cap hit, converting Johansson's cap hit to Staal's, getting the arbitration eligible guys in at the very bottom of the expected salary ranges, & getting deth guys @ league minimum/ near league minimum deals in total offset possible over payment to Thompson & over payment to Girgensons)

Will it result in playoffs?  Who knows.  But, he clearly had a plan and had the wherewithal to execute it.  He's earned, IMHO, a modicum of slack.  Hopefully Krueger, staff, & players demonstrate he deserves it and more.

I was tempted to play possum, and comment on number six. That we haven’t acquired a LD, just a 5th RD in Irwin, but you don’t deserve that.  But if I did......I can only imagine the reply.

I don't smell the taint that you are getting a sniff of. He is giving his opinion without any reservations. That's what people in the opinion business do.  Rob Ray also works for the Sabres as an analyst and he isn't afraid to give his unfettered opinion on WGR. Habitual cynicism can be a contaminant.

As stated above by others, Rob and Marty are free to editorialize, however rarely do they question decisions of Management and certainly not that of ownership.  Example - In hindsight or maybe even foresight Mitts should’ve been sent down to Rochester long before he was.   You never heard Rob or Marty critique JB for keeping him in the line up.  Perhaps just critical of certain plays on the ice during the game or at intermission.   What I’m getting at is that if the Sabres cannot acquire a new goaltender it might be awkward behind the scenes if Marty comes out and says the Sabres need an improvement in goal, verses giving his full support of the player.

If the Sabres are fortunate enough to trade, let’s see how quickly he pivots to support that of the acquired player.  If he doesn’t and says the move was superfluous and unnecessary (b/c Hutts can handle the load) then I’ll believe how you have positioned your contrarian view.   I don’t think that is being cynical.

I'm going to make a prediction that is going to rile you up and the rest of the smart gang that resides here. I'm not saying what I think is going to happen with the goalie position simply to be a contrarian. While the overwhelming sentiment is to replace Hutton as the backup I don't think that is what is going to happen. My sense of the situation is that the organization is going to stick with Hutton as the backup and rely on Ullmark as the heavy duty #1 goalie. Even with a compressed schedule I see Ullmark as being the workhorse goaltender with Hutton sparingly used as a starter, maybe once every three or four games.

I have a lot of respect for Marty Biron's ability to evaluate goalies. He believes that Hutton has a tendency to fade when he gets overused. Marty also believes that worrying about Hutton's play is an overblown issue. It should also be noted that Hutton has a mentoring relationship with Ullmark and is very supportive of him. They clearly work will together. Assuming Hutton's eye issue is resolved I trust Biron's judgment on this issue.

I trust Marty too, but as he is tied to Sabres financially, his take on players within the organization must be questioned.  Is it a true analysis or towing the party line?  A hint of taint.

Unless Girgensons has a statistical anomaly of a season akin to his 15-15-30 sophomore season, there's no way we're protecting him. And, given what he provides, unless we give Seattle a sweetener to take him, there's no reason they take him in the expansion draft when they could take whoever of Tage, Mitts, Eakin, or Borgen, whomever we decide of that group to not protect.

Agree with fact they are not protecting Z.  Why would Eakin be protected?  With seven forwards to protect its both Tage and Mitts and possibly someone else at the trade deadline, if GMs are looking to move players before the season ends. Also note Borgen May/may not require protection based on games played this season.

  7. His trade value is extremely low.  Not just for the reason mentioned, but more so for the current market conditions.  There are so many teams that will be forced to reduce cap, and so few teams to take that cap space on, that the value of the player moved between now and January 1st will far exceed the return.   Aka, a buyers market.  Perhaps his contract is more than you might want in a FL#3 LW role, but the Sabres desperately need more scoring in the middle six and on the Power Play.   They were still only middle of the pack in the PP last year.  They should be looking at the additions of Hall and Staal as an opportunity to move into the top 5, rather than treading water by losing a valuable asset on special teams.  I hope they keep the current trend and sign VO to a one year deal.  A prove it deal with flexibility for both sides.

I agree, I expect several rfa to become ufas, because their team do not want to pay the settlement.

    Ullmark maybe one of them

The Sabres cannot 'walk away' from the arbitration for Ullmark.  The CBA has a threshold when a team can walk away.   I believe that number is 4,538,958 this year.   I can't see Linus getting this amount.  Maybe his settlement is more than we want, but once we tender that QO we are bound.   They could also choose to make it good for just one year instead of two.

  9. Direct TV -Center Ice package.  It's usually around $130-150/annually.  West Coast start times are usually 4-4:30pm so I DVR and watch after dinner.  Family First.  Turn the phone off, so text messages don't tip me off.  I can't tell you how many times I've picked up a call from my 80 year-old father where he asks if I've seen the game yet, followed by "Don't bother" before I can answer.  Gotta love him.  Drives him crazy to wait for me to get home from work and not watch live when he visits.

The other benefit of Center Ice is the complete pre and post game shows on Saturdays for HNiC.   Love the Canadian broadcast.  Saturday nights after the Sabres game ends, I love watching the West Coast game.  Only time I get shut out it when it's a Ducks or Kings game.  We are forced to watch the local broadcast.

    Sam played plenty without Eichel.

It’s funny what people want to remember.

Jack and Sam played almost 1000 minutes together.  Sam played only 106 away from Jack (5v5).   For reference Point and Kuch played 760 together and Kuch played 197 away from Point.  In Boston, Bergeron and Pasta played 669 together but Pasta played 337 minutes away from Bergeron, albeit 10 more games.   Either way it’s a super high percentage of 5v5 TOI together.  More than most.

That's not an overpay for one year of Raantta. he's a capable goalie, like Montour is a capable defenceman. They are both pending UFA's.

I would be very surprised if Arizona gets a 2nd for Montour in this market.

It's not the first time I've over-valued our resources.  Call me Darcy!

Raantta is a capable goalie, but in the mind of Arizona, its a desperately needed cap dump.  What is good play from a back up going to bring the Yotes next season?   They are in serious regression mode.    Who else has both cap space and desire to take on a # 2 goalie at over $4M?  And more importantly, what is the going price for a #2?  J. Allen got a third.  Matt Murray is a #1 and yielded a second (albeit a very high second).

Recent trades for a top 4 Defenseman (A. Martinez) have brought back 2 second round picks.  Scandella brought a second and a fourth to Montreal.   How can Montour not bring at least that?

  13. Montour & Hutton (we retain $1M of Hutton's salary) to Arizona for Raanta.  Arizona moves Montour to Team X for a 2nd round pick.

    Out - $3.875M + $1.75M = $5.625

    In - $4.25M

We could conceivably retain $1M from Montour to garner more value from a team with cap constraints.

It's an overpay for one year of Raanta, but Arizona saves $2.5M and gets a second round selection.  The Sabres do not lose any 2021 draft picks.

Dallas ranked 26th in goals for. They were 2nd in goals against. The Sabres don't believe they can upgrade their goaltending to reach that split so they decided to fix the goals for side of the equation. Sure there are many ways, I am just theorizing the Sabres way under this GM.

I'm not saying your theory of trying to improve GF is inaccurate.  I obviously think KA is trying to improve other area's (like PK) with his trades/UFA signings but yes 'goals for' was lacking and he brought in players who should elevate last years goals per game.  I'm also still optimistic they can correct the GA problem as the same time   I think one of the ARI goalies and possibly more moves on D can improve GA.

2018 - Sabres  ranked 24 in both GF/GA.   Last year, improvement to rank 21 GF/20 GA, however their differential was bad.  Not surprising the lowest 7 in differential missed the playoffs.  So yes they need to jump into the upper half of GF if they plan to make the playoffs (not a modified version).

The only thing I will disagree on is the contention that Dallas was 26th in GF.  Third last is 29th.

The league seems like it's shifting to high scoring teams being successful (TB). Still, it feels weird not having a solid #1 goalie.

Except this years Western conference champions, Dallas.  Only two teams in the entire league scored less, and one was Detroit.  And they played almost the entire playoffs with a backup goalie.  Better than most teams # 2, but average nonetheless.  The point is there are many ways to achieve success.  Not just scoring, not just a dominant goaltender, not just speed, Not just strength, etc.

I agree on targeting AZ, but I'd rather have Risto than Gogo.  And if AZ is dumping a goalie, they want more than $1MM in cap space.  I think they want picks/prospects.  Next year's #2 for Kuemper maybe?

A number 2 is too high.   Especially in the Covid Cap Crunch of 2020.   Lots of UFA's and RFA's still unsigned and teams are rapidly losing cap space.  Listen to Kevyn, errr Billy Ray.  Pork Bellies futures (Market for Goalies) are going down.   The other GM's are out there 'panicking'.  Don't be Mortimer Duke!!
