My comment assumed a signing.

I don't see how you draw that conclusion from what I said because it's not even close to true. First, I think you underestimate Compher's value. he makes that team significantly better. Some of their other moves are flippable assets or stop gaps. We will see what the final roster looks like come opening day. I don't know how Gibson and Toews get into this so no comment on that.

Fair enough. Tight cap is what all the good teams have to deal with though. Look at all the moves this year for that reason. The two things kind of go hand in hand. You have a hard time competing at the top level if you're not spending at the top level (or even cheating with LTIR). Skinner's money is gone in 4 years. That's enough for 2 solid mid level guys right there. The key to cap management imo is staggered deals so you always have vets heading to free agency as entry level deals end. Then you make your appropriate adjustments based on their play and who you want to keep. It has to be a mix. This is why the huge prospect pool is great but it's a hidden peril too. Too many young guys wanting money at the same time the window becomes a very short one. Something will definitely have to give if all these prospects are actually good.

I don't see Karlsson ending up there but you never know. If I'm the Leafs I look at sending Nylander to San Jose in some complex deal involving some retention, but then again I said they should trade Nylander the FIRST time he held them hostage.

Dahlin gets big money. Power can be handled a few different ways. Not sure we pay him full out right away. We will probably handle him the same way we did Dahlin. Quinn and Peterka have to still earn their level of pay. We will have to see how much Quinn's injury sets him back and how fast Peterka develops (and into what). So no, it doesn't change my point. We have lots of money.

Defense remake underway! Who is moving on?
PerreaultForever replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
I really don't see the problem. Some of you guys just aren't used to defensive depth. First, Bryson is a non issue. Just don't care. Rochester or picked up on waivers, just don't care. If the D is healthy or the season craps out we flip Johnson at the deadline. maybe Stillman too. Maybe Lybushkin. Jokiharju I look to trade as he might have value. But if we can't that's okay too. Defensive depth is a valuable thing. -
If I'm Adams now I'm offering Bertuzzi a big over pay for a 2 year deal. He likely wants term but maybe with no instant offer his agent shifts strategy and goes for the FA when the cap is larger strategy like Orlov did. and I'm STILL offer sheeting Swayman.
-
It would take more than that for a trade and sign which I think will happen with somebody.
-
I don't see how our cap is tied up. Everybody says the cap will go up a lot after this year remember. We have low end star contracts for Thompson and Cozens already in place. Samuelsson is locked up at a good number. We have tons of money. You're making an assumption that all (or at least many) of our prospects/rookies will all become stars and need top value money and that just isn't going to happen. Even if a Savoie or Kulich or somebody does earn big bucks that'll just be a shift over with Skinner's money. We DO NOT need to be saving all this cap money people say we need to save.
-
I would suggest the Orlov signing means Pesce is going to be dealt somewhere.
-
It's the term that's crazier than the salary. 3 years at his age? Desperate Leafs.
-
Incorrect but good of you to know what the entire board thinks. As a fan, I want us to be a cap ceiling spending team not a cap floor team. Assets we can use and flip at the deadline, why not? Orlov got 7.75 from Carolina for 2 years. I'd have bid more for 2 years (after which the money goes to Power). But maybe Terry needs a new private jet or yacht instead of a winning team who knows? I still have SLIM hope we trade for Pesce and Helleybuck but it's a remote possibility until it isn't. Otherwise, we haven't done enough. We add Bertuzzi tomorrow or make some other big move I will change my tune.

Never said he was a wizard, but he does pivot quickly and there always seems to be a plan B and a plan C. He seems to have an adaptability and flexibility to the situation that many GMs lack. Most GMs have one singular vision and stick to it regardless of failure. Just look at Dubas. Or Treliving. "Jost fits this team" well yes, he does, a non playoff team. I want a playoff team. We need to be better than last year, not the same. I watched a lot of Seattle last year. Geekie is a better option but of course he likely would sign in Boston over Buffalo anyway. I was just comparing 2 similar contracts for bottom six players. Anyone who sees Jost as an important part of this team has set his bar far too low.
-
Oh it's a big overpay but it's just money. If we have cap money not spent it only helps Terry. Detroit owner obviously don't care. ANY added asset is still an asset. I'm not convinced Detroit will be any better, but adding assets and then flipping them for picks later? I have no issues with that if I'm a Detroit fan.
-
Well you can scoff at this but it's a one year deal so it's another guy they can flip for picks at the deadline if the season doesn't go playoffs. Unlike Buffalo, Detroit spends their money and turns it into assets down the road. Unless they are drafting very poorly they will have an even deeper prospect cupboard than the Sabres. It is a plan.
-
This is possibly true, but the question would still be when?
-
10 picks in each of the last 2 drafts. That let's you at least swim over the water if not walk on it. Didn't have to tank to get them either. Just watch, if any of these guys don't work out great he will flip them for more draft picks down the line.
-
Disagree. He had injury problems and that made him seem inconsistent but he was a solid goalie after that. We shall see, but I really felt we needed a veteran goalie to back up Levi or even make Levi the back up. Not too late to offer sheet Swayman............
-
I think he's smart. He's constantly trying to balance win now with draft for the future. Look how many picks he had in the draft. He won the draft imo but unlike Adams he believes in filling holes now and having veteran leadership rather than relying on the rookies. He's adding pieces, but without compromising the future. It's a solid plan.
-
Compher to Detroit bothers me. They weren't really better (or a playoff threat) prior to this but now maybe they are. The one that really bothered me was Korpisalo to Ottawa. If we'd signed him instead I'd be all gung ho about playoffs next year (with Clifton added as well) but now Ottawa gets the biggest thing they lacked and our future is dependent on the rookie. It will be interesting to see which team comes out on top. Bruins should fall. Just a question of how far. Dubas is showing how bad of a GM he always was. Pittsburgh will fall. Leafs have issues to say the least but likely still playoff level. It won't be easy, unless Levi is a phenom.

Sabres sign Defenseman Connor Clifton to 3 year 3.33 AAV Deal
PerreaultForever replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
Correct. I think Clifton pairs perfectly with Power and he will allow Power to open up his offensive game more and be more aggressive. The upside: He's tough and hits like a ton of bricks and does it frequently. Pound for pound probably the most physical Bruin last year. He is very good in transition and has more than enough speed to fit into the Sabres style seamlessly. He might even thrive in it and increase his offensive numbers. Has a decent shot and is a good passer. He is a real high effort work hard team guy who will scrap and stand up for teammates whenever needed (at least he was in Boston). The downside: He isn't big and the lack of reach makes him less than perfect defending in front. His biggest flaw is he has a tendency to over pursue the big hit and can get caught out of position as a result. A little of the Risto flaw in a way. In a highly structured good defensive team like Boston he got away with this more often than not. IF we still play that loose and open style we did last year this MIGHT make him run around too much and he might struggle more as he is the type of guy to try too hard and try to do too much. Hopefully, that won't happen but if it does his game might fall apart and he will drop to bottom pairing value at best. I think however, it's a really good add and makes us better instantly. (Bruins fans refer to him as "Cliffy", do with that what you will )
