Duda, in three offseasons, Shero has added Taylor Hall, Will Butcher, PK Subban, Sami Vatanen, Nico Hischier, the very same Marcus Johansson, Jack Hughes, Kyle Palmeiri. Sure, there are two bottom of the standings finishes, but there was also a playoff appearance. He's developed low-probability prospects such as Jesper Bratt, and his prospect pool is on a level that completely took apart our own pool in 2017 in that tournament, I vividly remember them owning the puck against us. Dahlin helped us the following year, but they had also lost Hischier to graduation. Miles Wood, Pavel Zacha, and especially Blake Coleman have settled into very nice depth roles developing in his tenure. This list is more impressive than anything you've listed, and it's the freaking Devils, who nobody cares about or think will be anything notable, and it includes a goddamn playoff season. Why on earth is what we're doing special and noteworthy rather than baseline competence while also being a miserable NHL team and not winning a single AHL playoff game, and only having a good AHL season because of Murray guys and players like Redmond who will never factor into our real team in the future?

This is not the same thing as saying we're doomed and will never get out of this - I think we're close and one big good move away from taking a fundamental leap towards something we haven't had in a decade. But I don't think I'm the only one tired of the perpetual , always-positive justification that fans build up whether it's deserved or not, and that's what led to the original comment you took issue with. It might become deserved shortly, but it objectively isn't yet, because no team ever HAS to go through what 85% of Jason's tenure has been so far, to become good from being bad. It's NEVER a requirement, certainly not from where we were when he took over.

I think you're attributing coaching effects with GM effects.  Also, NJD had a great cap situation like when Murray started the job.  Botterill needed time to get over the mess that was Murray's choices.

  2. My way of interpreting a 'Top 10' is by asking the question, which 10 players in the league do teams focus their strategy around neutralizing?  There are players who meet this metric who are just on trash teams (like Eichel), but that doesn't mean they are any less dangerous in a vacuum.

    1.) Connor McDavid
    2.) Sidney Crosby
    3.) Alex Ovechkin
    4.) Jack Eichel
    5.) Aleksander Barkov
    6.) Nikita Kucherov
    7.) Artemi Panarin
    8.) Nathan MacKinnon
    9.) Mathew Barzal
    10.) John Tavares

Yes, all centers and wingers.  Karlson has fallen off a cliff.

Tim Murray was fired before he was allowed to rebuild.

Interesting take, since all his draft targets turned into duds and he left us in cap hell that's taken Botterill three season for us the climb out of that's not ready until 2020-2021.

Looks like we will have some cap space to make some UFA splashes by this season.  Won't know really what's needed until this season plays out though. I'm hoping we just bank up some space and go after some nice rentals to push a cup run ?

Seems a little steep for Rakell.  I'd go Risto and Erod (don't think Smith get the deal done).  No to McCabe with his new 2 year deal.

You do McCabe to shed cap

Rakell doesn’t have the term that’s ideal, but neither do Risto or McCabe.  That’s what makes it a fair trade.

Got to overpay a little to get them to move Rakell, but I don’t see any other teams in the league taking on all the cap this trade sheds for anything we’d actually want or they’d actually part with. Tampa was held back by NTC. Cap holds back most other teams.

  5. Risto+McCabe+Smith to ANA for Rakell

    Sign Gardiner 3x6$

Just keep ELC players down on paper for opening roster then LTIR Bogosian on day 1 of season.  Over 4 mil in LTIR to cover bonuses worst case, trade Scandella mid season opens up any cap needed when Bogo and Pilut returns.

    Skinner-Eichel-Rakell

    Sheary-Johansson-Reinhart

    Vesey-Mittelstadt-Oloffson

    Girgensons-Larsson-Rodrigues

    Okposo

    Bury: Sobotka, Wilson

    Dahlin-Montour

    Gardiner-Joki

    Scandella-Miller

    Nelson

    Bury: Hunwick

IR: Bogosian, Pilut. When Pilut returns, trade or 7D Scandella. When Bogosian returns, same.  Nelson is expendable here

I dunno. imo a team as bad as we were should not be pushed up against the cap in any way. Something has to give.

I'm starting to wonder if he isn't simply going to move Risto for draft picks and/or prospects.

The only trades that made any sense to me were the package McCabe+Risto for a prospect deal. And I’m totally for it

  7. Y’all are putting way too much emphasis on the GMs in these negotiations. Skilled RFAs have all of the bargaining power and if they want to only sign short deals, then that’s what they get.  It’s really not up to the GM if Dahlin or Reinhart want to go one route or another

Ah yes, the "you didn't play, therefore you don't know" rebuttal. Some of the best coaches and GMs never played beyond college/junior, while some of the best players of all time have been lousy coaches and managers. I have no doubt that those who played have a better understanding of what players go through on the day to day, but that's quite a bit different than playing experience translating to actually knowing what produces wins.

So you’ve played college or major junior?

I'm going to keep saying that getting rid of McCabe is a mistake.  We need  more of him, not less.  Why do other teams want him???  Because they know his value and need that on their team.  I'm ok with Nelson, Hundwick, Scandella, even Pilut if it comes to that, but not McCabe.

They want his hitting. But he has an IQ wall that he could never get beyond. Plus he’s been soured by all our losing over the years.  Good change of scenery target.

In all fairness, it just fits the narrative for moving Risto and the apparent defense rebuild Botterill has under taken. Could be another team though to, but given those persistent reports that Buffalo is in the thick of the Gardiner talks all through July, it just seems to fit.

My fear isn't Gardiner off hand, he's a decent 3/4 puck moving LHD imo. My fear is what the return is for Risto. Man, I am really interested in whether it's a stand alone 1 for 1 type deal, a package of players scenario or a combo of players and picks. Also, the LW and LHD positions are heavy NHL caliber players, like more than we have slots for. Now the LW situation I could see slotting a player on the RW, but with 7 NHL caliber (and yes, I know, I know, that's loose with the term caliber ? ) something's gotta give there, no? And LHD, as well...….?

Just all seems to fit is all. Then again, I could be looking at the girl in the cut off shorts walking by the CVS while across the street I completely missed the 4 babes in triangle bikini's walking by the water...………...so who knows. It's just a hunch ?

Trading Risto+McCabe+Smith for a top-6 forward under long term control is an easy win. We have too many defenders and 3rd line forwards.  We need top 6. It’s a perfect move.

We have $33.4M coming off next year.  Reinhart might be $8m, and Montour $5-6m?  What's $1M  going to help next year when there are no UFA's worthy of chasing?

    image.thumb.png.6f79a22704e1179a4cec5b3fcd1f45ee.png

I’m thinking a couple buyouts to maximize the cap space available this year is what will help us in a Risto trade acquire the best return, considering all the teams he’s rumored to have cap problems they have no easy ways to fix.

But Im a little confused because Tampa has NTC on anyone they would trade that costs cap other than Point. And he’s hard to believe they’d part with.

Winnipeg at least has a few options to shed cap to make space for their youth.  A few 3C options at least there.

I think you can move Scandella to a team like Ottawa or Edmonton for a 6th rd pick if you retain $1million.

I believe Sheary is also gone with the addition of Vesey and Johansson.

Sobotka will be sent down and have to clear waivers.  Probably doesn't report and goes back to the KHL terminating his contract with Buffalo.

Would they wait until training camp to move Sobotka like that?  If this is the plan I wish it'd already be done.

  13. Can’t wait to see Eichel skate circles around other teams who are worn down by a playoff series. Eichel is the best athlete in the league.

Hes been held held back because we had a middle 6 last year that did absolutely nothing, letting their defenders rest up.

All these skaters Botterill is acquiring will change that equation.

Its one one thing to be tough. It’s another to have endless motors. We’re trending towards the latter.

In general, I think he is good.

Positives:  I like his overall philosophy of building an entire organization full of good people, top to bottom, as opposed to building an NHL hockey team and figuring that everything else would work itself out.  I know people sometimes scoff at the culture stuff, but I’m of the opinion that you need quality human beings to truly excel in a team environment.  I’ve liked the majority of his trades.  I’ve liked the type of defensemen that he has brought in, especially recently.  I mostly like the way that he has managed the cap, having Buffalo in good financial shape moving forward.

Negatives:  The O’Reilly trade obviously, though I have an inkling that he was given something of an ultimatum from above.  Not adequately addressing scoring depth hamstrung the team last season.  Goaltending is still a bit of a question mark.  These will need to be sorted out moving forward.  I wish that Reinhart had been locked up long term last offseason.  I feel like that was a missed opportunity to get a good value contract.  The Housley hiring didn’t turn out well.

Although there have been a few blemishes along the way, I feel that the team is on the right track.  I find myself looking forward to, rather than dreading, the next next roster move.  Botterill gets a B from me.

I am so sick of seeing the phrase "winning brings culture".  It's such BS.  Winning just covers up flaws and makes finding root causes harder to find.  The culture at so many top-competing companies are pure trash, and is why they turnover so quickly.  Only the ones that managed to get there with culture ever sustain.

  15. Best GM we’ve ever had. Building not only a roster of talent, but culture that will sustain success.  This takes more time than meek fans will have patience for, but all that really matters is the owner here.  And I believe Terry has learned after striking out with the hotshots in two different sports and has gravitated to culture guys for both

Struck out on Housley, but I believe Krueger in two years was his plan B from the get go. And good GMs always have a plan B and C ready. That is what former GMs like Murray never had, and ultimately is what Terry said got him fired.

His roster turnover over year to year has been staggering, fixing our cap structure with a bunch of short contracts. Hasn’t signed a bad contract yet. Trade returns are mixed, but his “losses” have all been on guys with locker room problems that our last idiot GM wasted the piggy bank on. Compare our defensive depth from his date of hire to now and you won’t find a comparable turnaround anywhere else, it was really that epic of a job.

Only thing he could’ve done better is find a coach who wasn’t the most sought after coach in the league the year they hired him.

Interesting debate here.  I totally agree with @GASabresIUFAN and @dudacek that the assets ultimately acquired are critical to the analysis, but I also totally agree with @TrueBlueGED and @Randall Flagg that the time value of the assets are critical as well — so IMHO TT and Johnson need to be really freaking good to make up for the intervening period during which ROR is really good while they are non-factors.

Last season was a test on Housley.  He couldn't outcoach the aura of ROR, so they got rid of ROR.  The following season if Housley failed, we had plenty of ammo for the next coach to build a different team for him.  We all saw how it played out.  Tage being in the NHL not AHL was a Housley decision ultimately, as Botterill has stated many times.  Montour was added to help Housley.

Time value of assets needs to be taken into the context of the season played and the (real) goal of that season.  The deadline moves would've been entirely different last season if Housley was a good coach.  He wasn't.  Remember, Botterill originally wanted to hire Krueger in the first place, not Housley, but Krueger wouldn't breach his contract.  The two year Housley experiment was to see if an untested, but 'hot' coach had what it takes.
