    Within the division this season:

Bergeron and Krejci are being paid less combined than Thompson and Mittelstadt this season. (Bold prediction: by the end of the season, that will be proven to be correct in terms of scoring output.) None of those 4 centers are on an ELC.

1st line? Bergeron and Thompson are being paid less combined than Charlie Coyle.

Top 2? Bergeron/Krejci and Thompson/Cozens combined are being paid less than any of Larkin, (and only outgain Copp by $170k), Barkov, Suzuki, Point, Stamkos, Matthews, or Tavares.

To be fair, they also do have some bonuses attached. I believe Boston has about 4.9 in eligible bonuses that are pretty attainable. They are currently over the cap, though LTIR will fix that. However, they won’t have cap left for bonuses, which is allowable (up to 7.5% of the cap), and the amount you go over is taken from next years cap space.

25-30 games would be ideal in my opinion.

He did really well in the games he got into last year and deserved more starts.

I don't know enough about the Sabres' Team D or PK to guess what his save % would be but if they play half decent D, a .920 sv% wouldn't surprise me at all.

Great in the room and everyone says you couldn't meet a nicer guy. I wish him all the best except against us.

In an ideal world, the Sabres would have a competent starter and Comrie would only need to play 25-30 games, but I don’t see Anderson staying good/healthy for 50+ games. Unless UPL blows the Sabres away or Comrie gets hurt, I don’t see him playing less than 30 games.

Bergeron AND Krejci. Looks like the Bruins will have one more run in them after all. Taylor Hall probably really happy. So unless things go terribly wrong there forget about knocking them from the playoffs this year.

They still have injury concerns with a bunch of their stars to start the year. They could be playing catch-up most of the season, and losing Cassidy will have some effects good or bad.

Exactly why I said the price Florida paid is MORE than worth it, to effectively time travel their window of contention. Keeping the Huberdeau they had wasn’t an option - they could have the one making this much, at this age, until age 38. Giving up the late first and Weager by far the lesser of two evils.

I actually think it was a brilliant move from Florida.

I think I’m a vacuum, it could be considered a good deal for Florida. However, they’ve spent a good deal of assets in the past couple years that have really narrowed their window, by trading their firsts in upcoming drafts. They are extending their window with the Tkachuk trade, but the rest of their moves have been shortening that window, so it may not work out for them long term.

Somehow escaped my field of vision - he’d be one I’d have down as a shooter-first, for sure

I think VO can and does snipe but I don’t see him as a shoot first player - I think the stats bear that out, too. On the PP he’s a trigger man but ES I see him dish as much as shoot. Probably more, in fact

His game certainly has rounded out a great deal. I wonder how much our perception of VO was changed this season when he went 30 games without a goal due to injury. He didn’t really have his shot, so was definitely dishing more than shooting for that time period.

  6. If the Sabres can stay healthy, they have a shot at the playoffs. Over the last 28 games they were 16-9-3 with 8 wins against playoff teams, and the only loss to a non-playoff team was to Winnipeg in a shootout.  If they can play at a similar level they will be in good shape next year.

Definitely agree here. Loved seeing them add that pure playmaker to the system in Östlund. Krebs, Östlund do look like the two forwards in system who best fit the “pure playmaker” description.

Quinn, Cozens, Savoie, Kulich, Peterka, Mittelstadt.. all these guys seem to have pretty balanced pass-to-shoot preferences. (Though if Savoie really does become the next Briere, he’d lean “pass”)

I suppose on roster, Tuch is a guy who is pass-first. Looking at the roster/system, outside Skinner we don’t seem to have a ton of “shoot first, sniper” type players, either. Kisakov, Poltapov, Rosen? Not that familiar with them.

Really, the Sabres definitely seem focused on acquiring forwards with balance. Seems to be the name of the game, that versatility. Quinn being the poster child. He seems to both shoot and pass equally well.

Neuchev would definitely qualify for this, I believe he led the MHL in shots this past year. Oloffson is also still a sniper, though his game has rounded a bit over the past couple years.

Really don’t think this board understands what kind of player Poltapov is.

He forechecks and disrupts like Vaclav Varada, but also might have enough skill to play in a top 6.

Sounds like someone who’d do great alongside Cozens in a strong 2 way line. I think KA is trying to build a team that can run four lines all night, without too much difference in minutes. In a few years, I  think we could end up with an average first line, a second line that is more like a below average first line/High end second line, and a third line that is like an average second line. Skinner, Tuch, Quinn, JJP, Oloffson?, Rosen, Kisakov, Poltapov, bloom, Neuchev, and Nadeau are all possibilities to fill the wing spots and make that happen. Between Thompson, Cozens, Krebs, mitts, Savoie, Kulich, and Östlund we should have the centers to make it work as well.

The comparison to Oloffson is an exciting one to think about. Oloffson in the AHL the year before his rookie season (age 23 in the AHL) put up near identical numbers to JJP last season (age 19). Quinn put up even better numbers. If they can come in and produce like Oloffson’s rookie season (20g and 42 points in 54 games), the Sabres will be in good shape to compete for a playoff spot. Oloffson in his rookie season got better linemates and likely more ice time than JJP and Quinn likely will, so getting that level of production would be hard, but they also are younger and have a shot at growing more.

Didn’t say that did claim JJP was 18, but I though that the way you wrote it was unclear and potentially misleading, and I honestly wasn’t sure of your meaning, so I wanted to clarify.  No offense intended.

Interesting, regarding Peterka and whether 2021-22 was his age 19 or 20 season.  Where do you see it listed as his age 19 season?  Hockey Reference uses the player’s age as of January 31 of the season in question.  I thought that was the standard practice.

I think it’s September 15th for the AHL, not 100% sure though. A player has to be 18 by then to play in the league.

We are trained to judge on those things, that's the worst part about it.  How often do you see a "headline" on a news aggregator that basically is a reinforcement of being judgmental?  It's sad.  "The one mistake people make with cooking potatoes." or other stupid crap like that. People read that crap and believe there's only one way to do things and anyone who doesn't do it is a simpleton.  I'd say simp but I believe somehow the world has found that word to be insulting. Perhaps simpleton is as well, who knows anymore.

Simp is insulting now because of the acronym it entails, not really anything to do with living with simple means.

  12. A question for those who know goalies better than I: What does Levi need to work on? Right now the only negative I have seen is that he lacks ideal NHL size, but that can be made up for if you are good enough. Is his rebound control, positioning, lateral movement, etc. all NHL level yet? Where does he need to improve most?

Hey if we’re being bold then Eric Comrie turns into Carey Price (I won’t ever say Hasek since there is only 1 slinky).

Dahlin, Power, Lybushkin, Samuelsson, Jokiharju and Bryson form the best young d core the league has ever seen before.

So… Stanley cup? Price behind the best young d core ever would be tremendously hard to score against.

  14. 1. Mitts wins the 2C job and puts up in the neighborhood of 55-65 points.

    2. The defense performs as a top 5 unit in the league, but due to the goaltending and less than defensively responsible forwards, the Sabres end up around average for goals against.

    3. The Sabres finish with 88 points, 6 points off the last playoff spot (94)

  15. It wouldn’t surprise me if the plan is to have a non-traditional forward group with 4 scoring lines. Something to the effect of:

    skinner-Tage-Oloffson

    Asplund-mitts-Quinn

    okposo-Cozens-Tuch

    JJP-Krebs-Vinny/girgs

If Quinn or JJP really break out next year, it would give the Sabres a lot of flexibility in the lineup, with scoring throughout the lineup.

    skinner-Tage-Quinn/JJP

    Asplund-mitts-Oloffson

    JJP/quinn-Cozens-Tuch

    Okposo-Krebs-Vinny/Girgs

I had Asplund so high in both lineups because he really balances out a line and helps to tilt the ice in our favor.
