Krebs isn't exactly going to be a "kid" in 1-2 years. imo Krebs will never make it as the kind of center he was in junior. He either learns and develops into a good role player or he will be an AHL perennial.
all we need is............that's actually quite a lot and are the very things I identified back in free agency. Those are the holes we didn't fill, and they are big holes.
My expectations for Krebs at this point in time are not very high, and he won’t be as young as this rendition of the kids line. I think it is fair to note that Cozens has about a seasons worth more NHL game experience than Krebs.

I’m tagging you to not lose sight of my Power observation in a thread about the entire league.
I am thinking that Dahlin and his slow, but recent meteoric growth has taken pressure off of Power to be elite immediately. I can easily see local fans fans say, “lay off the guy because look at how long it took our other #1 overall to be elite.” This case in point should give Power a lot more room to develop without the microscope that Dahlin dealt with. That’s a huge plus.
There’s not only the development of Dahlin to compare Power to as well. Tage Thompson is a similar size player that didn’t break out till 24. It’s a little scary to think about how composed Power is back there as a 6’6” rookie defenseman. When he continues to grow into his body, and develops his defensive abilities more, we’re gonna be damn scary to play against.
When thinking about how well this kids line is performing, it makes me even more excited for the future. In 1-2 years we could see a similar kids line of some combination of Kulich/Savoie/Rosen/Östlund/Krebs. Having already established scoring lines of Skinner-TNT-Tuch, JJP-Cozens-Quinn will put a lot less pressure on a similarly talented 3rd line.
All this team really needs (beyond this year) is goaltending, defensive depth, and possibly a revamped 4th line for a shutdown role.

How is he in the AHL but Matthew Savoie can't ?
Is there a new rule i missed .
They are using a loophole, any NHL player that is scratched for 5 straight games can be sent down for a one time “conditioning stint” in the AHL for 2 weeks. This can only happen once a season.

Oh I missed the original statement. I can't believe that narrative is still going around and even better now being embellished even more. The original take is so bad. If you are going to chime in on factual items, learn the facts. I'd say mind blown but that seems to be the way these days. "I overheard somewhere that MItts couldn't do a pull up a training camp." Man..
It depends, are the 3rd and 4th centers seasons NHL vets who can win faceoffs and shut another team down? Some teams can continue along, albeit perhaps not as good.. but the Sabres lack that depth. That's not a slam on them.. it's the nature of youth build and eventually they'll have that depth.
Give some examples of teams that would be fine losing their top 2 centers. Having centers that are good at shutting down/faceoffs as your top 6 centers for an extended period of time will make it hard to win hockey games.

The reality is this team is very thin and not very deep. We saw how bad things got with several D men injured, can you imagine what will happen if Thompson and Cozens were out at the same time? The bottom 6 is simply terrible with a draft bust, a waiver pick up, a one dimensional shooter and a couple aging has beens plus one more rotating body. Its a bottom six group that cannot match u[p to many better teams. We won't get better until we can add in more rising prospects.
What team would be alright if they lost their top 2 centers?

Can you explain??…. Aren’t blocks counted for shots at the net??… Every block helps the goalie, in my opinion… Their goalie got plenty of help…
No they aren’t.

Sounds like this board would quickly turn on him:
”As far as weaknesses, Chychrun is turnover-prone, though that can happen when a player handles the puck as much as he does. Last season, Chychrun committed turnovers on 16.2 per cent of his total touches, tied for 186th out of 223 qualified defencemen (min. 500 minutes).”

Per Friedman, Chychrun has told the Coyotes He wants to go to a contender.
Seems silly to me. He’s wanted out for how long now without being traded? And he’s decreasing the potential suitors?

Skinner is so close to having a hat trick

He needs a change of scenery. Sign him and assign him to Rochester.
You can’t just sign him, we would have to put a claim in on his current contract. It could handcuff us quite a bit in a couple years.

Here's someone who definitely fails the "wants to be here" test.
But he is a goalie who was 20-14-2 last year on a lousy Kings team, so...
Lousy? I don’t think a team that was 20-14-2 with a goalie going .895 is lousy.

The QPC(Home Shopping Network Line - I can't take credit for that one, someone else posted it but I find it hilarious!) is DOMINATING CF% and is our best standard line at 57.97%.
The TST line(Tuch-Skinner-Thompson) Line is also good at 54.49.
However...it appears there are 2 line combinations that have played 5 games and over 35 minutes of TOI that appear to be even better than those...
Olofsson-Middlestadt-Quinn line have a 65.57 CF%
Skinner-Thompson-Okposo line have a 63.01% CF%
Olofsson-Middlestadt-Asplund have the worst CF% of any "regular" line combination at 46.02 showing that Quinn, even as a rookie is a MAJOR driver of CF% for this team.
Even more crazy is the Sabres have a 54.08 CF% against divisional opponents this year and are above 50 for all teams they have played...TB was is the worst with a 50.28%
So Theoretically:
Skinner-Thompson-Okposo
JJP-Cozens-Tuch
oloffson-Mitts-Quinn
Girgs-Jost-Asplund
may be our best line combinations. I’d hate to see JJP-Cozens-Quinn broken up with the way they’ve been playing though.

EV means even strength and xGF is expected goals for. So they are looking at his xGF% (so xGF and xGA divided) which helps us understand what happens when Owen Power is on the ice. The short version is that in all the years they have data that attempts to count up expected goals, Owen Power last night finished with the highest xGF% divded by TOI (60min) of any player going back to 2007.
"We were referencing his on-ice xGF (total xG of unblocked shots taken for Buffalo while Power was on the ice)."
While Owen Power is on the ice his team generates significantly more offense than they give up. xGA/xGF per 60 minutes of TOI.
you have to divide. xGA/xGF
EDIT: Oh I see what you mean, idk about that.
They were primarily looking at his xGF, not the xGF%. He had the highest xGF at even strength when he was on the ice of the past 15+ years, but he also let up a decent amount of chances. Of that list of the 10 highest xGF of the past 15 years, Power had the highest xGA, and the expected difference was the second lowest in the list.

JJP - Cozens - Quinn is our best line sometimes.
They were the best line on the ice that period. Generated quite a few good chances to go with the goal. Our top line hadn’t done toooo much outside of TT taking over for a sec.

I get that it’s a surprise with Vancouver, but Kraken are second in that division and are a pretty solid hockey team.

Some smaller players are physically very strong and play with a lot of speed and intensity. Some figure out how to play bigger before Junior level and they can excel at every level. Johnny Gaudreau jumped straight from college to the NHL at 5'9" and 165 lbs. Being 21 as a rookie, not 18-19, helped him.
I hope that Savioe is one of those players. He carries a sturdy 180 lbs on 5' 9" so he has muscle mass to work with. One year in the A would be beneficial for him.
You could say that Tage Thompson fits in this generalization, but I think it is a generalization that is not always true. Owen Power is holding up fine at 218 lbs on his 6'6' frame. He will get stronger and better, but he is already is a solid contributor and can make any line up in the NHL.
I find that both are generalizations and the bottom line is almost all young players take time to develop. Very few jump in at 18 or 19 and make an impact.
Owen Power is a 1 OA pick. Using him as the example for big players not taking as long seems silly. Especially when you consider that he didn’t play his D+1 season in the NHL (other than a few games at the end) and every other 1 OA pick since 2008 went straight to the NHL. (2008 was where I stopped checking, I’m sure it goes back much farther).

Smaller players take longer to find their place. They can be smart, just don’t dominate until they figure out how to use those smarts to their advantage. He needs time. Unlike Krebs, he’s showing that time should be in the NHL where he is all positives despite not producing.
Isn’t this just the opposite of true? Isn’t it usually the case that bigger players take longer, as they still have to grow into their bodies? Or at least isn’t that the usual trope?

I think the question needs a bit more clarification. What do the Sabres need to make the playoffs? What do the Sabres need to win the cup? 2 very different questions.
Currently, the Sabres have 4 players in the top 53 of scoring. Cozens is also tied for 106.
Skinner-Thompson-Tuch has been playing like a high end 1st line.
cozens has been playing like an average 2C. With a bit more time I think he’ll be a high end 2C (Think Kadri of last season)JJP and Quinn have been playing like solid middle 6 forwards. In a years time, I think they’ll be solid 2nd liners, with more room to grow.
Krebs has been scary for me, and I’m not sure he’ll be much of anything at this level, but it’s possible.
Asplund is a good 4th liner. Mitts has potential to be the 3C, but needs to do a lot more at even strength first. Vinny, Girgs, are spare parts that are adequate for 4th line roles. Okposo is a good middle 6 forward, but is on an expiring contract, Oloffson is a fine 3rd liner.
Dahlin is a 1D. Samuellson is a nice complement for him. Power will be a great 2/3D (that may play like a 1D)for us with time, right now he’s not quite there, is more like a 4 now.
Jokiharju/Lybushkin are both solid 5s.
bryson is a 7.
On Defense, we need some time for Power to mature, and to add a 4D. Once that happens, our defense will be playoff calibre, possibly cup calibre.
Goalie is the rough spot. Levi is the hope of the future, but could be 2-5 years from being ready for the starters workload. We need a #1 goalie bad.
To make the playoffs, all this team needs is a #1 goalie, and to stay reasonably healthy IMO.
To become a cup contender, we need time for our rookies to get to the level where they can make an impact, as well as a #1 goalie, #4D, and a depth forward or two. -
Finally a decent power play

If an offside 30 seconds before the goal can get pulled back, why the hell can’t too many men 5 seconds before the goal get a goal called back.

Is Jokiharju also traded in this scenario? I don’t foresee him not making the roster if that is not the case.
