I’d love to make this deal but I’d worry KA would decide this would be the goaltending tandem for the year.

A small price to pay IF KA drafts well this year. 7, 9, 16 and 41 OA could add a lot of skill and set up our pipeline to be just about the best in the league, with already one of the youngest rosters in the league.

But they replaced toffoli with Caufield and Danault with Nick Suzuki I would call that a upgrade.

Suzuki was already on the roster, and was the reason I said they lost their 2 and 3 Cs, I didn’t say they lost their 1C. And while Caufield may be better down the road, he had less goals and points this year than Toffoli did in the shortened season. (15 less games than Caufield)

I also forgot to mention losing Tatar, one of their other best players.

Have we gone to the realm of fair weather though? I mean we suck and tickets were 7 bucks on stubhub. As soon as we were slightly better they were much higher and we still sucked.

Well, I generally would say if there are still fans despite currently holding the NHL record for missing the playoffs the most straight seasons, they couldn’t really be considered fair weather fans.

Ok the monteral  Canadians went from the Stanley cup to the worst in the league

It's not going to be the same next year people are going to have down years etc

Yeah, but we are in a wildly different situation than the Canadiens. They lost their star goalie, 1D and 2nd and 3rd centers in last offseason. They already had overachieved, and it was clear they were going to regress (albeit that much was unexpected). We haven’t really lost anyone of large significance, and have a lot of young improving players. We’re trending up, and id be surprised if we were bottom 5 next year.

Nemec is always there at 9 no matter how many sims and I don’t think he’ll be there in real life.  But I guess you never know.
i just hope KA goes bpa at every pick.

Turn down the randomness/team needs and he’s less likely to be there.

Was this in ref to the OP?

This is why I like the sound of hockey model. It doesn't look at the quality of the player but actually analyses how teams have valued the picks based on what they do. He says "... I tried to get to how teams have–by their actions–actually valued draft picks. To do this, I looked at the pick-for-pick trades made by NHL teams in recent drafts with the goal of understanding how teams have actually stacked up the value of one pick versus another"

    Image-5-26-22-at-9.43-PM-980x701.jpg

Yeah, in reference to the OP. This is a better analysis IMO, but it is just so situational with how the draft differs and how rare early trades are.

  8. I feel as this is a pretty poor analysis for the worth of draft picks. The only criteria for worth of a pick is man games played. The picks values are derived only by the expected amount of games played in the league. One example they gave was 8 and 32 for 1 because you have an expected return of roughly the same amount of games. This has no way to track the quality of the games though. In 2015, McDavid was 1 OA and Zachary Werenski and Christian Fischer went 8 and 32. This system would likely give more value to Werenski+Fischer than to McDavid (because they together will likely play more games), even though that would be a clearly lopsided trade if it were to happen

Well, you are the one assuming here.  Ward won the Conn Smythe in the year that the Sabres lost a D-man after every victory in the 3rd round so though it turns out over his career he was little better than a scrub, he got hot at the right time & on nights he wasn't Gerber (another meh goalie) was good enough.  Also, Ullmark+ goaltending isn't scrub, though it leaves a lot to be desired.  (Your better football analogy would be Mark Rypien who was adequate or worse most of his career but sold his soul to be an actual QB in '91.  Rypien led that team's offense.  Dilfer wasn't bad enough to offset arguably the best D of all time ('85 Bears would like to have a word, but that Ravens D was definitely in the mix) and nobody would ever suggest somebody is intentionally providing only a Dilferesque level of goaltending competency.

How many of the "best goalies in college hockey" have turned into exceptional goalies at the NHL level?  There have been a few through the years going back to Dryden playing for Cornell.  But being the best in the NCAA is about as indicative of NHL success as winning the Hobey Baker is - sometimes it translates, but more often than not it doesn't.  Hellybuck was the last one that kept it up at the next level and his heyday was a year before Eichel was drafted.  And personally, really like Levi's potential.  But until he's here & effective, all it is is potential.  Something UPL had in spades prior to the double hip surgery and Noronnen had in the AHL (speaking of potential unrealized).

Will be very surprised if a significant part of the cap is spent on GTing as this team is filled out while Adams is here.  With the unique cap situation they have presently, it might happen that he spends serious money on a ST guy THIS off-season, but don't really expect it.  Would really like to see Adams FIX the GTing.  Unless Levi pans out, he might never truly do it.  Adams would seem to be quite content w/ Kuemper level goaltending, but he has yet to show he can identify that & land it.  It also remains to be seen if he can build that '06 Canes squad that Kuemper level goaltending w/ reasonable backups (can't forget the backups carried them well enough while Darcy was out) would be close enough for.

One thing worth noting though, is that the list of NCAA goalies who did better than Levi’s season last year is just one-Ryan Miller, who was a quite successful NHL goalie. And Miller didn’t do that in his first season as the goaltender for his team.

  10. Ideal draft IMO:

9: traded up with pick 41 (maybe Ryan Johnson too/instead) for pick5/6 where Nemec has fallen. Sabres take Nemec and in 2 years have a top 4 of
    Power-Dahlin

    Samuelsson-Nemec

16: Take Yurov (if he’s still there) and get a prospect with top 10 skill that could be an elite first line winger in the future.

28: a little less sure for this pick, but definitely would be quite happy with Miro/Lambert as another boom/bust pick that could have incredible return.

Would you be comfortable drafting two of Miro, Yurov, and Lambert in the first? Don’t know if I love the idea of grabbing two.

If the picks were 16 and 28, absolutely. The boom potential of 2 of the above would be more than worth the risks that come with them at those picks. Sure, they could both bust, but if either hit, the investment will be worth it.

If Craig Anderson is a solid close to .500 goalie who starts 20-25 games and is an excellent presence in the locker room: This is $1.5M well spent.

If GMKA thinks Anderson is a 50+ start goalie and want to pair him with a UPL who has never shown the ability to stay healthy, then it is a disaster.

Rangers really need a lefty shot, I can feel an Olofsson deal where he goes to NY and the Sabres get Georgiev/Nemeth and sign Georgiev for a couple of years and he gets his chance to be a #1 and roll with Georgiev before Levi is ready

That would be a horrible return for Oloffson. Better options than Gregoriev available on the UFA market.

I hate to update the consensus rankings againso soon, but actually I found 2 updates for some of the rankings in my list of 15.

The 15 are 2  each from the Athletic and TSN, Sportsnet, THN, THW, Dobber, McKeens (but only to 32), Yahoo, Smaht, Daily Faceoff, Draft Prospects, FC/Sportsing News, and Leafsnation.

Top 7 - Wright, Cooley, Slafkovsky, Nemec, Jiricek, Savoie and Kemell

8-12 - Gauthier, Lekkerimaki, Nazar, Yurov, Korchinski

13-16 - Mintyukov, Mateychuk, Lambert and Kasper - I feel much better about Lambert have hearing about his amazing skating from Kris Baker.

17-20 - Geekie, Ohgren, McGroarty, and Howard

    21-23 - Kulich, Miroshniichenko, Ostlund

24-28 - Snuggerud, Firkus, Pickering, Mesar, Chesley

    29-32 - Gaucher, Luneau, Bichsel,

    Second Rd

33-35 - Odelius, Beck, Hutson, Del Bel Belluz

    36-38 - Casey, Goyette, Rinzel

39-42 - Trikozov, Havelid, Hughes, Nelson - Maybe we take RHD Havelid at 41 and then his twin brother a goalie later in the draft.

43-47 - Bystedt, Zhilkin, Salomonsson, Lorenz, Sapovaliv

48-51 - Perevalov, Schaefer, Lamoureux, Lutz

52-55 - Nyman, Forsmark, Ingram, Hamara

56-60 - Lund, Warren, Sykora, Lindgren, Ludwinski,

61-65 - McConnell-Baker, Poitras, James, Grudinin and Minten

I like this ranking a lot, no one is much out of place.

You are missing someone in 29-32 though.
