I have my doubts about Rosen as well, but I'm curious what you mean by the bolded.

Statistically, he finished 3rd in AHL scoring this year among U21 players, ahead of several other high picks.

He's 3rd in all of the AHL? Oh under 21 players got it. That’s great for us then since we can use that as a selling point.

  2. I think Cirelli is a pipe dream imo. Not sure why Tampa would want to trade him and especially to someone within the division. I feel Adams will just promote from within at 3C, Kulich or Krebs most likely.

I don’t see where Rosen fits on this team and still hasn’t really translated in the AHL as an ascending player. I’d like to see him dealt but I have no confidence in Adams to trade any prospects at this point until he shows otherwise.

In 2016-17 when Stephenson was the age that Krebs was last season, he was putting up 38 points in 72 games as a Hershey Bear. It wasn’t until 2021-22, when he was age 27, that he had a breakout 64 point offensive season in the NHL. I get moving on from Krebs if the time for patience is over. But Stephenson wasn’t the Stephenson who you want, until he was a few years older than Krebs is now.

But the Stephenson now is who we need on this roster, I dont want to wait around for Krebs to possibly be Stephenson in 2-3 years time down the road because there's a good possibility he never will be also.

Did you see the projection above of 5 years at 5.162?  The last 3 seasons he's had 64, 65 and 51 points.  He isn't taking less than 5 per season.  His age and not as stellar play last season may limit the term to 4 years, but he isn't coming here on a 2 year deal.

I doubt a team is signing him at 5 years 5.1M, maybe they will I truly suck at NHL projections but that seems high.

  4. I think getting Chandler Stephenson to me would be the ideal 3rd line C for us, he offers everything that Krebs doesn't... Skill, toughness, grit, 52.6% on faceoffs. It's absolutely baffling to me what people see in Peyton Krebs at this point. He doesn't score, he doesn't fight, he has some toughness but is more or less just a guy who talks trash every now and again, only has 46.3% faceoff wins (Has over 400 less faceoff attempts as Stephenson and still not better at it). Stephenson is making 2.75M, bump it up to 3.75M per year for a 2 year deal? A nice million increase might entice him.

Pretty much done deal on Waddell to Columbus.

Im just intrigued if Buffalo really looked at him because that tells me they are serious about bringing some senior hockey minds into the organization.

my number one choice is Dudley but I’ll be interested to hear if they are talking to anyone about a senior advisor role.

Maybe they have figured out that when you hire a GM with no experience it would probably help to have a solid vet hockey man to help guide him a bit.

Let's have all ex Sabres running this for us... What could go wrong?

I'm not saying he commands 8 million, I'm saying it might take 8 million to get him to consider coming to Buffalo.

Clifton shouldn't be making anything over 2 and yet we pay him 3.3 I think it is. There's a premium you need to add to get most guys to come here. There may be exceptions, but I suspect most players would want a lot to consider us.

In any event even at 6.5 it's too much money tied up in D for cap sustainability. Byram will be up for a raise as well remember.

I get what you mean now. I would bail on both Muel and Clifton for Pesce but thats me, get some nice young bottom pair dmen.

This is great. Absolutely wonderful. Couldn't agree more except for one little thing.

7.5 million for your bottom pairing D? 31 million plus whatever you pay Pesce for your 6 D (it would take like 8 million to get him to come to Buffalo). It's not really sustainable.

No way is he commanding 8M, dude was making 4.03M and has an offensive output of 13 pts, 6.5M tops imo. Also I'd be fine dealing Clifton or Muel, neither would be as impactful as Pesce again imo.

I sort of sidetracked the offseason game plan thread with a defensive discussion.  That discussion deserves it's own thread.

Right now the Sabres D group consists of Dahlin, Power, Byram, Clifton, Samuelsson and prospect Johnson who are all under contract.

Jokiharju, Clague and Bryson are RFAs.  Q offers for each are as follows: Jokiharju (2.6), Bryson (1.9) and Clague (.775)

With 6 players under contract, there isn't much that KA has to do this off-season.

I was honestly surprised to learn when looking at Power's xGF earlier today how well most of the guys looked when playing with him.  (Thanks @thewookie1) Maybe there is more there than I suspected with just the eye test.  While I mentioned him as a possible trade piece, I do agree with @LGR4GM that odds favor all of Byram, Dahlin and Power in the lineup in the fall.  If that's the case, which of the other 5 guys (Clifton, Johnson, Samuelsson, Jokiharju and/or Bryson) do you want back, what would the pairings look like and what other moves would you make to improve a D group that as among the worst in the NHL last season in giving up HDCS and HDSA?

I worry that bringing back the same group would be a mistake.  This group needs at least one more good D first player, maybe two.  I'd like to see Dahlin, Power and Byram anchor their own pairing and try to spread the ice time more evenly.  I also want to see Byram on the PP.  I think he will bring more aggression to the PP, which it desperately needs.

I'd have Pegula  do a full court press and fly that Jet for RHD Brett Pesce, I would deal Jokiharju with other pieces for a forward. Now you have:

Line 1- LHD Owen Power RHD Rasmus Dahlin

Line 2- LHD Bowen Byram RHD Brett Pesce

Line 3- LHD Mattias Samuelsson RHD Connor Clifton

Pretty solid defensive core with some ruggedness, skill etc.

  9. Iginla would be the only prospect i want in this draft class. His dad was 1 of my favorite players of all time and to see him come to our games to watch him would be amazing. The player is not necessarily like his father in every way but his brand of hockey is exactly what we're looking for.

  10. Let’s all be honest, no top names are coming here to a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 13 seasons. Stamps is wanting to win cups not be excited to finally make a playoff appearance.

I’m not even being negative I just believe that’s the reality of the situation. We could however find some decent vet players who are excellent role players.

I disagree.  I think Lindy would have gotten this past year's roster to the playoffs as is.  That said, I won't be surprised if a rookie or two make the club, but I do expect some of holes created by outgoing players to be filled by established vets.

What he's saying is that it simply doesn't correlate to more wins.

Man I really hope you're right.

  12. If we go into this season with the roster as is with rookies sprinkled in again it will be another long season. We need toughness, grit, backup goalie worth a damn, rugged defensemen and definitely need to upgrade Skinner on the top line. He wouldn't be on any teams top line in these playoffs. Adams has his work cut out for him and hasn't addressed those needs yet and it's going into year 5 so hopefully 5th times a charm?

  13. 2 hours ago, Thorny said:

He’s hit the 2 coaches mark and he’s hitting 5 years this year. Especially cause you’d expect to fall on the below average side of things considering the severely below average performance, nonetheless we reach his likely endpoint if we miss this coming season

I hope I'm wrong and all Adams needs is a HC the caliber of Lindy Ruff to make things work.

I’m not trying to convince you of anything on Adams. TW posted that GMs don’t get fired that quickly and you replied that you disagree. Sorry then, what was it about his post that you were disagreeing with?

I don’t think it takes 5 years for a GM to turn around a franchise and I would lose no sleep is Adams was fired today. For now though, I have more faith in Adams figuring this out than I have in Pegula getting it right on his 5th GM.

You wrote a reply, I replied to your statement that I disagree with your take that. Now I'm not really sure what you're talking about, I might be lost in translation here.

I don't think he was expressing an opinion on Adams level of success.  He was pointing out that GM's don't get fired as often as people think (certainly not at the same rate as head coaches).

I've lost a lot of faith in Adams going back to July 1, 2023.  I can't understand, though, how anyone would think the best option is for Pegula to pick another GM.  The best option for now is to hope that Adams, who I think is clearly a bright guy, has learned from his mistakes and properly course corrects this off-season.  I'm skeptical, but I prefer to see what Adams does in partnership with Ruff over having Pegula making a change.

I never once said anything about GM's being fired at the same rate as head coaches.

I can't understand how anyone can say we need a 5th year to see what this GM can do. Also you say Adams is "clearly" a bright guy like it's fact, I guess we just see it differently and that's cool. Not everyone agrees with my take and I get that, I just don't know what I need to see in year 5 of the Kevin Adams experience that I haven't in years 1-4? I hope he does well obviously and we turn it around . He finally gets to show what he can do with a legit HC so we'll see.

Teams don’t fire GM’s that quickly. Pegula gets more hate around the league for how quickly he has changed course, not for poor hires.

The average tenure of an NHL GM is roughly 5.5 years and they normally get to hire 2.2 coaches before being dismissed.

I'll agree to disagree and 13 seasons of no playoffs is absolutely insane considering half the teams make it. I don't know what more we needed to see from Murray, Botteril and now Adams but I guess some still believe in him apparantly.

  17. 1 hour ago, tom webster said:

That’s actually not been true till Adams. Say what you want about the people he has hired but he hasn’t just done nothing as the team has lost and underperformed.

Not sure what you mean, 4 years of Tim Murray, 3 years of Botteril, going on 5 years of Adams.

Hagel, who they didn’t even offer a contract to has done OK.

Sheesh, there have been so many I forgot about him. Evander Kane as well if you want to go back some years. We truly are a farm team for other top organizarions and people wonder why it's been so negative around here at times, imo it's much deserved.

So was at the Amerks game and forgot to DVR the Panthers/Bruins game. Just read the box score and couldn't believe what I saw. Florida 6 goals, 4 by ex-Sabres. I mean, just wtf has been going on in Buffalo? Never seen so much ineptitude for so long.

Just read this after I made my post. We are def on the same page brother.

Zadorov was great in the Vancouver/Oilers game also. Ullmark last year for the Bruins and the ***** show never ends.
