    I remember you

Wanted Okposo and Girg back. Thought last years Roster should remain the same. Hell you were elated when Nolan was hired back

yet hiring the Franchises most established Coach/Player???

Guess you are the fan that wants The Bills record broke!

This makes no sense, because he doesn't want Lindy Ruff who just got fired from a young team like ours he doesn't want the team to win? There were 2 Stanley Cup winning coaches out there and we pick the worst of those 3. Are you sure you dont want to see the Bills record broken?

  2. I liked Ruff back in the day, thought he was a great HC but he needed to go when he did as i feel he lost the room. He hasn't really been all that great since leaving the Sabres and we picked him over 2 head coaches who actually won a Stanley Cup in Gallant and Berube. So what I'm gathering from the talking heads on the radio is that they don't believe he's a Stanley Cup winning HC but a HC who will come in, demand respect, get the kids up and running and then Seth Appert will take over in 2 years. If he's not a Stanley Cup contending HC why the hell did we bring him in here? Wasn't the goal to not only win 1 Stanley cup but, multiple years? Now the standard is to get tough and maybe make the playoffs? This organization is so trash they have to use nostalgia to bring people in to this arena and this will be all the 50-60 year olds wet dream seeing a former player/HC and now returning HC come back yet again and we'll wait way too long to fire him when he fails because "Buffalo legend".

I wont be critical the fancy stats, they are another tool, but I don't fully understand how they get the data for them.  Who decides "expected" goals for example?

Lets say UPL faces 35 shots and lets in 2 goals playing the entire 60 minutes.   For the game the GAA = 2.00, and the SV % = 33/35*100 = 94.3%.  That is easy enough.

Lets say he made 3 amazing saves in that game that someone thinks should have been goals.   Who decides that for determination of "goals saved above expected"?  Because they are saying he gave up 2 but should have given up 5 and in some way they are looking for a way to account for that.   Right?

OR, lets say he let in an easy goal that deflected off his glove on a routine catch?  How do they determine and account for that?

I understand basics of statistics and probabilities,  so when I see the data I can usually think through the meaning, I just don't know who comes up with the data for these stats and how.   Is there a set of criteria that is applied to all situations in a uniform manner.    Does the league do this?  or the teams?  or independent services?

Expected Goals - I pass the puck to Kucherov in the slot with the goalie pinned deep in the crease.  There is tons of net.  He shoots cleanly with no defender on him.  Is that an expected goal?   Is it still an expected goal if that player is Eric Robinson?   I assume it is.   If Kuchrov dribbles it into the goalies pads is that a goal below expected for him?  Is it a save above expected for the goalie?

What are the best fancy stats to tell us effectiveness of a player by position?

I am probably not alone in wondering about some of this.

It's a bunch of nerds getting together to see who's pocket protector is bigger. I'm sure if you deep dive into this there is some fatal flaw like anything.

This is kind of embarrassing just means there isn't any leaders on the team yikes

I mean most of us knew this which is why we didn’t want Okposo/ Girgensons back. Neither was pushing anyone to be better in anyway and both 4th line players.

  5. I never go by fancy charts, never will. My eyeballs tell me that UPL played excellent hockey for the last portion of the year but like this team when we needed him most (both Detroit games he was average at best) . I also think Levi will be the best goalie in the NHL in 2 years from now and you're already seeing glimpses on the AHL.

I don't disagree at all. It was a thing with the Sabres long before I came to Sabrespace. It's come up over the years many times. Nolan's lunch bucket crew were different but that's about it. My first choice is Gallant without question.

As for Granato, no need to get into it as it's done and over but he may have talked about accountability but he did not hold them accountable. Too much "growing and learning as a team" talk and too much calm and patient forgiveness along the way. Too much comfort.

Agreed and i would really like gallant but my 1st would be Berube, Gallant would be next. I'd take Brindamour over all of them but that's more of a pipe dream imo.

I'd join in and say when during the year did Granato call them out or publicly say they lacked effort? Never. When did he bench big name players who slacked? Never. When did he put them through the ringer in practice and work them into piles of sweat because of their bad effort? Never. It was always "they are learning".

As for the Lucic incident, yes, it was a huge thing but I would suggest that if one incident like that can break a team, then they were already broken, it just hadn't been made blatantly public yet.

Same thing could happen today by the way. They had nobody to stand up to Lucic then and we have nobody to stand up to Jeannot, or Olivier, Rempe, even DesLauriers etc. Nobody. In recent memory Maroon ran our goalie when he was in Tampa and we did nothing. Heck, we didn't even stand up to Kucherov.

It's not the same league, but we are still relatively speaking soft.

Granato has said in almost every inteview "they didn't have enough compete", literally after almost every loss where they were terrible in the 1st period. Just so you know I'm not defending Granato at all, he needed to go but this is about the reason Ruff was let go and it was alot of the same as we're talking about here. "Not enough compete", "Accountability" etc.

Maybe it's time to get the tough guys that we never get so this wont be a problem, seems like a viable solution eh?

Yes, I recall Miller doing that.  I did not get that from your post though.

I have no idea if Ruff lost the locker room as a result of that, but probably not.   I don’t understand what any of it has to do with Granato either.

I actually would prefer Gallant or Berube instead of Ruff as my first choice.  But if Ruff is selected, as I suspect he will be, I won’t hate it.

You stated "What was Ruff supposed to do go fight Lucic", correct? So what was Granato supposed to do with our current roster, go out there and show them how to compete? Line up at LW and try to score goals for them? Can't you say this about any coach?

Was Ruff supposed to go out there and fight Lucic himself?

The Sabres had Sekera, Pommer, Gaustad, Vanek, and Myers on the ice.   No one would drop them with Lucic who warded them all off.

I do not understand what your last sentence means?

Whatever it was, this incident was a signpost of bad that still haunts this franchise.

So the same goes for Granato then right?

What don't you get from my last sentence? Ryan Miller was calling out the team in the post game interview after he got ran. All this happened under Ruff's watch. So now because you want Ruff as a HC all the ***** he was let go for didn't happen?

I agree but wasn’t that what EJ was for?  He was bad and maybe his voice fell on deaf ears but they really need to find the right guys to kick these kids ass.

Get Garnett Hathaway here and anyone who gets out of line he punches them in the face several times until they learn.

"I think a lot of times this year, we got away with some stuff that we shouldn't have gotten away with," he added. "I think if you clean those things up, then it sends a message."

Who thinks Ruff would have let that juvenile fan rebellion stunt go on for two weeks?…

Would bet a bunch he would have benched the ringleaders without hesitation to send a message to the team, the fans, and the town.

Didn't Ruff lose the locker room after Lucic destroyed Ryan Miller? Isn't he the same coach to where Miller was calling out people afterwards?

    Worth the watch.

Man, I know times are rough after 13 seasons of no playoffs but I couldn't imagine being a fan and dedicated to something only to have it taken from me, it's got to be a brutal feeling that I hope we as fans never have to feel. He said it perfectly though, can we get this guy as our play by play? He already likes an ex Sabre player.

It’s a kids game.  Let’s not get carried away with the pomp and circumstance.  It’s a nice story about gay he got it but it’s a piece of cloth.

They parade Shane Doan around every chance they get to remind everyone that they used to be a real NHL franchise now the banner they hung to remind everyone is just another piece of material? Nah, I'm not buying what you're selling and what do the gays have to do with this? Plot twist?

Supposedly it was found in/around a dumpster at the stadium and then potentially saved by an employee planning to use it for something as there are supposed pictures of it draped on a lawn chair prior to being acquired by the man in the video.

Absolutely nuts and disrespectful to a guy who gave his heart and soul for them.

Would that have made the team play better?  Honest question.

Ask UPL if it helped him, as soon as he knew his job was on the line he elevated his game. Why Granato didn't implement this after what it did for UPL is beyond me.
