  1. Oh by the way, I know this is sacrilege but I’d trade Girgensons this off-season. I give his job to Asplund, waive Bjork and re-sign Vinnie. I’d then spend money to bring in a good two way center.
  2. Aka Rory Fitzpatrick.
  3. The infamous lines in a blender trick. We are wise to your crafty ways DG.
  4. I’m not taking a shot at Asplund but realize that with Tuch, Skinner, VO, Krebs, Quinn, JJP, KO and Girgensons returning to the roster, Asplund is the 9th winger unless he moves back to center. That’s possible but I think KA maybe looking for a move veteran presence between Z and KO. The truth is I like Asplund and particularly like him when he plays with Mitts. There is nothing wrong with being the 9th winger next season. Between injuries and resting days, he’ll likely suit up 70 times. Also with KO and Z on the last year of their deals he is in the catbird seat for one of the 2 way slots in 23/24.
  5. It also helped that Mitts became the distributor on the first unit. As I’ve said before, getting VO and Mitts healthy changed the Sabres from a two effective line team to a team able to roll four lines 5 on 5 and their impact has been bigger on the PP. Mitts has 7 PP points and 7 EV points since 3/1.
  6. The Wild are unlikely to be trading Dumba or Fiala. Despite having to lug around the Suter/Parise’s buyouts for the next few years they are in surprisingly good shape cap wise for next year. They have 17 players already under contract for only 61.5 mill. Rossi will make the team for another value contract. Fiala is really the only major expense left. After that they are only looking at a backup goalie and a few depth F and D. This may put them a few million over the cap but that can be fixed by getting someone else’s LTIR contract like we did with Boychuk.
  7. @matter2003 Samuelsson and Krebs are considered NHL rookies this season. Neither had played 25 games plus in the NHL prior to this season and neither had played in 6 or more games for the prior two seasons.
  8. Welcome to the Twilight Zone
  9. Question: Does Thompson break out if Sam isn’t traded?
  10. They probably stopped calling him that after his first hair cut.
  11. MVP - Dahlin - He is the fuel that makes the engine go. Rookie - Samuelsson, followed by Krebs Comeback - Anderson - he played only 4 games last year. Skinner is second Unsung Hero - Olofsson. The teams best two parts of the season occurred when he was healthy. Top Forward - Thompson - Wow. Just Wow! Top Defenseman - Dahlin Top Goalie - Anderson but I gave consideration to UPL for his save% in limited action MIP - Thompson Special Award to Tuch and Okposo for excellent on ice play and culture defining leadership.
  12. @triumph_communes I added the MIP.
  13. Anderson played 4 games last season and was thinking about retiring. To comeback and play 30+ games and give us at least decent goaltending is a major accomplishment and imho deserving of some consideration for Comeback player of the year.
  14. There is a huge difference between Sam, Dahlin and Jack. Sam has improved every year in the NHL but has always maintained a consistently good shooting %. Dahlin, except the year with RK has had similar annual improvement. Jack on the other hand had a breakout year but hasn’t really built on it. Maybe it was the injury or maybe it was significantly more puck luck in a career goal scoring year. Tage’s season is coming out of no where. It’s hard to judge if it’s a career year or a new standard which is why I say exercise caution.
  15. 1) Team MVP 2) Rookie of the Year 3) Comeback Player of the Year 4) Unsung Hero (player who doesn’t get enough credit) 5) Top Forward 6) Team Norris 7) Team Vezina Edit 8.) Most improved player. (I knew I was forgetting something).
  16. I don’t think he’d take 6 for 6, but it’s possible. 36 mill is a lot of guaranteed money. 6 for 6.5 might get it done if KA was so inclined. However, I hate paying up for a career year. Skinner’s deal might have made me somewhat gun shy. Tage is 24 with one year left on his current deal. I’m wondering if he might be better off signing a 3 year deal and then give himself another shot at a big contract when still in his prime at 28?
  17. Why? We need a veteran center who can win draws, score, and play a 2 way game. I do agree that if Vinnie wants a 5 year deal that it’s a no go, but there is no issue with the kids if he’s here on a 3 year deal. The plan is to roll 4 “equalish” lines. Cozens, Mitts and TnT are 3/4 of the needed centers. We have the cap space and the need so why not?
  18. Both guys are 26 and Samson is the better player, but stats wise there is some room for debate. Here is some food for thought Olofsson g/gp .29; pts/gp .66 Reinhart g/gp .30; pts/gp .70 Sam is now a pt a game player and has 527 NHL games under his belt compared to 184 to Olofsson, but to Vic’s credit he has done a very good job here and should be re-signed. I like that even at 26 his game continues to develop. Not bad for a 7th rd pick.
  19. @matter2003 No question goaltending is the greatest need. While UPL was decent during his time here, he has some serious flaws in his game that Marty Biron has pointed out on occasion. Frankly, I’d wipe the slate clean. I don’t trust UPL at all, nor do I want Anderson or Tokarski back in the NHL. The biggest problem facing KA this off-season is who is a proven upgrade on Anderson & Co. who is willing to come here. Most of the available players have flaws or allegedly don’t want to come here. For example DeSmith has never played more then 36 NHL games in a season; Holtby hasn’t started to 2 years and not sure if his rebound in performance is sustainable; MAF is old, expensive, and probably won’t come here etc… Husso, Kuemper, and Campbell are probably the top 3 UFA starters and all 3 play for contenders. I honestly can’t see Colo (Kuemper) and Tor (Campbell) letting their starters walk. Husso is the most obvious player to invest in at 27 except this was only his second season in the NHL and his numbers were drastically improved year over year. Stl is committed to Binnington via a longterm deal with a NTC, thus Husso should be available. Sadly I just don’t see KA taking that risk.
  20. I'd love to add Vinny. He is making 6.25 this season (cap hit only 4.75). Do you think he's even on KA's radar ? Are the Sabres on his? How much would it cost to get him? Personally, I think the Canes will re-sign him, but I'd love for KA to at least kick the tires.
  21. Something Marty Biron has talked about on numerous occasions. If he doesn't fix that, he'll never survive in the NHL.
  22. I hate a 3 headed goalie monster. What happens when/if DeSmith and UPL outplay the 41 year old Anderson? I'd hate to put the classy veteran in that position. Hopefully Anderson will save KA from himself and either retire or take a job with a team in Florida. https://sabrenoise.com/2022/03/23/buffalo-sabres-craig-anderson-continue-playing-career/ My only real issue with signing DeSmith is that he has never been a starter in the NHL. The most he's played is 36 games in a season. His age is perfect to be here 2-4 years and be part of the equation. He comes from a winning organization is familiar with our management and they with him. His career NHL numbers are good with 92 games a 2.69 and .914. This year he is a little under those numbers. I like Holtby better because he has starter experience but has also won a Vezina, Jennings and a Cup. He is also only 32 and like DeSMith is young enough to be here for 2-4 years as our kids mature. I love that he's having a nice bounce back year. I also think he'd come to Buffalo to be part of an emerging team and to be a starter again. The biggest issue here is is this rebound sustainable.
  23. While I don't think Tage's coming out party is a fluke, this does smell like a career year. I do think he is a better player then Karlsson. When I see a shooting % of 15% for a guy who has never come close to that number I see a regression of the horizon. Take our friend Jack for example. Jack is a career 10.5% shooter. This season in LV he is at 10.4%. In his 36 goal campaign he shot 15.9% That's the only season he has ever been over 10.4% I'd wait and see next season if Tage can build on his accomplishments this season before entering a long-term deal.
  24. I did find it interesting the Buff News story discussed bringing Subban back at the veteran in Rochester. I have nothing against this idea. I would still like for KA to sign a young UFA for Rochester like SJS just did with Strauss Mann.
  25. Link? EDIT: Found the story. https://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/amerks-arttu-ruotsalainen-sees-future-with-sabres-hasnt-signed-in-europe/ Interesting! I had him high on my prospect list to start the season. I like the kid and his game, but I don't see him as a 2-way center. I would love to see him make it.
