  1. To me it doesn't matter if the Sabres *win* this trade. To me, they can't lose it.

A small skilled forward who could not crack the Oiler lineup, which is full of forwards even more skilled than Omark.

Props to PLF for doing something. Taking a chance. You can't win if you don't try.

This season is all about seeing what works. Omark might just work. Nolan will give him his shot and will coach him properly. Of that, I have no doubt.

Again, not saying it won't work out and I credit Patty for trying a low to no risk move. Having said that, the Oils are only 18th in the league in goals per game and have a terrible record and he still can't crack that lineup?

To nfreeman, do you know how many seasons he's been in N/A? If he came when he was 23 and he's 26 now then has it been 2.5 or 3.5? If 3.5 he's played less than one full season in the NHL. So although he may not be an AHL lifer, it's not like he's an NHL regular either.

  2. Wow, can we slow down a touch here guys? We didn't give up anything so it can't end up being a bad trade but I think it's way too premature to use the word steal. The guy has been a near AHL lifer, is already 26 and threatening to take his toys and fly back to Europe. I will give Patty props for making a zero risk trade like this. But this screams like another Luke Adam / D'Agostini type player. That video was a good watch but if he has that type of offensive skill, his D must be 50 times worse than Hodgson.

  3. For a lot of money, which you can't do anymore. If you had the pick to get the next Crosby (exaggerating a little), what would a team have to offer you to trade him away? Remember that after the top 1-3 in most drafts, you're talking about players who will probably be pretty good. So, no matter how many "first round picks" you're talking about, they aren't worth much if they are out of those top 1-3.

    No, your not exaggerating.

  4. So Marky Mark will play this week with the 'Merks then come back to Buffalo and practice with the big club if they need him, but he'll technically be an Amerk. Is there some sort of rule about that? I mean if I'm in Buffalo practicing with the big boys but they are making 10x the money I am, I'm going to be pissed.

This whole demotion is very confusing. I'm still not sure why he's down there if he's not playing.

  5. It will be months before I will have firm opinions on this but Dal Colle is an intriguing prospect.

I'm going to be very interested to see how Dal Colle plays over the next month. Scott Laughton may be the best player in the OHL IMO and he's heading to Sweden to play in the World Juniors so how will Dal Colle (his linemate) fair? I'm confident he will still put up points as he did early in the year before Laughton rejoined the team but it will give some insite into just how much Dal Colle benefits from playing with Laughton.

  6. Right now from what I have read and watched, Ekblad is a 9 and Dal Colle's stock keeps rising but currently I would say 8.5

That being said I only see highlights and parts of games so I can only go with my gut. Ekblad is a very solid 2 way defender who looks to be more offensive orientated than defensive. Great on his skates. He uses his body well but I wouldn't say he will drop guys like McNabb or Zadorov. He has 10 goals in 29games and has a really nice shot. Dal Colle is rugged. He works hard and has a decent shot. He needs to bulk up. The main thing I take away from Dal Colle is he seems smart in what he does, he moves to open areas and gets his shots off quick. They both seem to be able to slow things down when needed, Ekblad a little more so. It is hard to compare them directly because of the position difference. Over all Dal Colle brings something this team lacks and I think Ekblad brings more big puck moving defender.

Something to keep an eye on as the season goes on. I truly believe we end up drafting second which may turn out better in the long run.

What do you mean by the bolded? Not a fan of Reinhart?

  7. what if like last year they dont want a defender or dont care either way? What if you have#2 spot and your choice is Defender or Forward? Ekblad or Dal Colle? What do you do?

That's a tough decision. I always believe in BPA but I love what Dal Colle can do around the net. I guess I haven't seen enough Barrie Colts games to make an accurate judgement of him. If our scouting staff think Ekblad is much better than the next highest ranked forward I hope we go with the big Dman, if it's close I hope we go with the forward.

  8. So I just found out that Vanek only has one more point than Moulson on the year in equal games played, Vanek having one more assist. My question is, do you think it was worth that one extra assist so far for NYI to give up those 1st and 2nd draft picks? Do you think breaking up the alleged chemistry between Moulson-Tavares was worth it? When Vanek walks, I wonder how much they'll regret it from a historical stand-point.... those 1st and 2nd picks....Not to mention when/if (probably when) they defer to 2015, would it be worth that one extra assist to potentially get a Connor McDavid player (in theory)? Damn Darcy really got a bargain

I think my question/comment was more rhetorical but feel free to respond lol

Vanek is a better player than Moulson. Period. I don't care about this years stats. Having said that, I think we still got the better end of that deal, possibly by alot depending on where the Isles end up in the standings over the next two seasons.

  9. Loved to see him on this team...

Me too. I wish he was centre though.

Someone compared him to Alex Galchenyuk and I think that's spot on. He reminds me so much of him when I watch Dal Colle. Especially after Saturday's game where Galchenyuk scored and play well, I'd love having a player like that in our lineup.

  10. We need to wait and see what they get in return for Vanek first (or any other trade for that matter). If they wind up getting back any first round picks, that will have a major impact on their decision.

If they get a first in another trade do you think it's more likely they defer I take it?

  11. I honestly won't even let myself picture this kid on the Sabres because you know, you just KNOW it's not gonna happen right?

Yep. Wishful thinking for sure and there are other good players in the draft other than him. But with Nolan's talk of keeping Miller and a new GM likely wanting to put a mark on this team with a boat load of money available and us so far under the cap, I can't see us being this bad again next year. I could still see us ending up around 5-15 (worst) so there would be a small shot at winning the lottery but come on, we're Buffalo sports fans, we know how it ends.

  12. I'd argue you need to go even further than that. The team could go the way of the Briere - Drury days and keep getting centers, that team had three #2 centers. But to get to a bonafide #1 I'd argue you need to go further than Peca and talk about our new President of Hockey Operations.

Regardless of how we define #1 center, we still don;t have one. So we need to keep drafting centers til we find one or do the Drury/Briere thing and collect 3 or 4 number twos.

Ya, that could be argued and I agree with all of this.

  13. Way too early, and you have to take the best player.

But the system needs a top-six winger far more than a top-six centre, or top-four defenceman.

    Really?!

This team has not had a legit #1 centre since the Briere and Drury in their prime days. I'm one of the Hodgson supporters but only because I think he'll be a great fit as a second line centre. I'm not saying the guys mentioned are top line caliber players or not but saying this system needs a top six winger over centre is ridiculous IMO.

  14. Draisaitl's current stat line: 15g 27a 42pts in 28 GP this season.

    That sounds even better....

    And just for fun...

Michael Dal Colle: 18g, 28a for 46pts in 27games. He is still my favorite.

Yes it appears elite is behind and DB is more up to date.

    Michael Dal Colle: 18g, 30a, 48pts in 29gp

    Sam Reinhart: 16g, 30a, 46pts in 29gp

I absolutely love him. And this isn't coming from someone reading stats and watching a few youtube clips, I watch him regularily. Having said that, I would prefer drafting a centre over a winger.

  15. I love how fluid the early draft rankings are because it lets us get excited over different players. Interesting to see Draisaitl climb and interesting more that Reinhart's game has not progressed as much.

Quick note on that article which doesn't add up... Leon Draisaitl has 11g, 24a for 35pts in 26games this season. I have no idea where they get "has ripped apart the Western Hockey League, recording 15 goals and 27 points in 42 games."

See I'm the opposite. If we're going to suck big this year, I want there to be that clear #1 sitting there for us. Oh well, let's hope there are a few good ones at the top.

Thanks for the update on Draisaitl's stats as I was shocked when I saw them. How could someone be ripping up the WHL with 27 points in 42 games? I know stats arn't everything but It makes me feel better about him having over a point a game average in juniors.
