  1. I'm really curious to see if he brings in new scouting guys (like Kevin Devine) before the draft, or if he keeps the current staff. I have a preference to keep Devine around, but if Tim's bread and butter is scouting, he may have other ideas.

I'm also curious to see where the head coach position goes.

This is all in addition to key player movement (Miller, Moulson, Ott).

I really hope we keep Devine around. But as you said who knows what he does, other than TPegs and Patty, he's the boss now.

  2. It really depends at this point for me. If we can manage to hold on to finish at the bottom and are able to draft Reinhart, I'd prefer the Islanders to give us the pick in 2014 so we can draft another forward like DalColle, Draisaitl, Nylander, or Bennett just because the sooner we start selecting players the sooner they'll be able to play for us whether it's next season or a few years from now.

I don't think we'll be drafting top 5 next season unless we move out all our UFA's and don't replace them or worse yet replace them with Leino type acquisitions. If we do that, I'd hope the Islanders defer to give us twice the odds.

Call it the eternal pessimism of being a Buffalo fan, but I don't see us landing McDavid even it we end up with the worst record next season. The NHL doesn't even show the damn ping pong ball coming out of the machine to give the appearance of everything being on the up and up, so I imagine one of the favored teams will perform a mini-tank next season due to injuries or something along those lines, land a top 5 pick, and beat the odds to win the "lottery" so I'll take the pick as early as possible.

We trade or don't re-sign Miller for next season and all bets are off. Enroth is a decent starter but he's no Miller. We don't win or lose in OT in those games we let up 45+ shots like this year.

  3. Don't forget the Lottery. I firmly believe if the Oilers draft 1st they take Ekblad unless they make some other trade prior to bring in a young defender. They have such a lack of defensive and gt talent.

I completely disagree. I think they go BPA. If they view Ekblad as a better player then they take him but not if they think Reinhart is the slightly better player. Let's not forget they signed Schultz recently and have taken a Dman in the first round in 2 of the last 3 drafts (inlcuding 8th overall last year).

Also, despite the high picks they've had only Nugent-Hopkins is a centre. I'm sure they would love a good two way centre who is known for his hussle and hard work to play with guys like Yakapov who have all the skill in the world but can be lazy and poor in the D zone at times.

I've had some time to kill at work the past couple of weeks (since I'm the only one who didn't take holidays) and checked out a couple of Oil message boards and there are many fans who would love to take Reinhart first overall.

  4. Was it it me or did Grigorenko look good in the last couple games he played for Buffalo? I mean we are talking like this guy came in and pulled a Bernier or a Boyes. He has gotten better and he continues to get better. As a 19yr old to be able to play in the NHL is an accomplishment. I think with Zadorov here and Grigs getting better that this conversation is very premature. I have liked what I saw from Grigorenko thus far because I have seen improvement and that is the key thing we should be looking for out of 19yr old kid.

I haven't really seen improvement myself. I realize he's young and that's why it's too premature to call him a bust yet. Look what he did in the Q and more importantly to me, what he's done in the World Juniors. The kid has talent and I think he will eventually get there but I've thought he's looked pretty lost all season. Maybe this tourney is just what Grigs needs to get his confidence.

  5. Nice.

My hot water tank failing and going tankless = this thread,

The Sabres going on a run to nowhere (tankless season) = Nolan / new GM thread.

Tankless version of my avatar = Friday and/or awesome thread

Yes go tankless. We're only renting ours and it's about 20% more than the rental fee for a traditional heater but the savings are closer to 40% to 50% from what we've seen in our first few bills.

  6. Thanks for this info. Interesting that Ekblad is ranked #1 (top 2 in most lists) and the next highest defender is 9th. A team in the top 5 or 6 desparate for a high D prospect may be willing to trade a decent amount to move up. Also, I'm not following the D closely or picks outside of the top 5 but they have Fleury ranked 9th and McKeown 12th. I though McKeown was suppose to be the next best dman and ranked top 6 or 7. Wonder what happened to him? There was alot of love for Karlsson early in the year but he's down to 19th.

    Also, here's a decent write-up on Ekblad.

  7.

Who is the other? Not being sarcastic; I haven't heard of anyone but McDavid for the 2015 draft, although I hear it's incredibly talented

Eichel is suppose to be a franchise type talent. Mcdavid is the generational type player if he hits his potential but there are 4 or 5 great forward prospects in next years draft.

  8.

Right? So torn watching this team improve. I'd be more okay if it were the actual future of the team outside of Girgensons doing it all then I'd be more excited. But it's Ryan Miller (who I am still willing to bet will be gone within a few months) carrying this team for the most part. (Don't jump on me, I know that a lot of players are playing at a high level in front of him).

Luckily Rolston had this team down so low that we'll still likely be at worst at five.

I agree with most of this.

  9. Below is a very interesting article discussing the prospects of doing away with the current draft lottery system. It proposes each team drafting in a predetermined spot every year. Each team would draft in a different position every year for 30 years. It would eliminate tanking for sure and trades would be very interesting if you knew exactly what 1st round draft pick you would be trading.

  10. There could be several ways of looking at this, your way, yes, but he may also see this as a chance to "prove" himself in the "best league in the world." He may look at this situation as a chance to become a star player, and he may also realize that Buffalo has a sh*t-ton of cap room to overpay a player like himself if he works out. I guess we'll have a better handle on where his head is at after a few weeks of being a Sabre.

We have seen here in Buffalo how players can be mismanaged and can be stifled, I would think having the freedom to "play your game" would lift his spirits a little and give him an incentive to try. If the guy is frustrated at how his career has been going so far, he must see this as an opportunity to get where he wants to go.

This is what gives me hope. Obviously this guys NHL career is at a crossroads. This may be his last chance to make it in the leauge which will hopefully inspire him to play better in the D zone. In his only year he played most of a season in the NHL he was -16. I know the Oilers weren't very good in 2010/2011 but it was still tied for second worse +/- on that club. Some offense will be a welcomed change to this team, as will his creativity but let's see just how bad his defensive awarness is.
