  1. I woke up this morning saying trade 'em all.

Ehrhoff, Hodgson, Myers, Foligno, Girgensons, Pysyk, Ennis and our prospects are only going if another better young player is coming back.

But Moulson, Miller and Ott could be some contender's missing piece. They will be in demand. Auction them off. Get what you can, when you can.

Give them all hugs, tell them we will open up the chequebooks to bring 'em back in July. But move them now because their value will never be higher.

Depth defencemen are always in demand for a playoff run. Get what you can for Weber, McBain and Tallinder. We have better defencemen coming anyway.

If anyone thinks Stafford, McCormick, Konopka or any of our other pluggers has any value at all, take what they offer.

It's the only time we will ever get anything for any of them.

Sell, sell, sell. Hoard picks, prospects. emerging players, cap space and a few more pending UFAs we can sell off at the deadline next year.

Burn this place to the ground. Make sure we have a fast horse in the Eichel/McDavid derby.

    Let the tanks roll.

  2. I honestly couldn't say what Zadorov will become. It is highly unusual for a 16th overall pick to look comfortable in the NHL at age 18. Ristolainen is a bit easier to diagnose but again he is only 19.

Ekblad could be the next Niedermayer, he looks very good to amazing in the highlights and top prospects videos I have seen. The problem is drafting a defender 1st overall when your forwards are in such a state of crap. It is a tough call.

Speaking of Dmen, I can man up and eat crow when it is warranted. I was listening to 590 (or was it 1050?) on the way home from work last night and they were talking to an Oilers beat reporter who said they would almost certainly take Ekblad if he is on the board when they draft. I am really hoping this is the case because if we come in last and the Oils are the ones who win the lottery we would get the best forward available. I still think several other teams would go with a forward if they were to win the draft lottery though. Either way, let's hope TM is doing his homework with Devine!

  3. I've been meditating on this a little lately. I can't see how they possibly think any of Zemgus Girgensons, Tyler Myers or Rasmus Ristolainen would be on the market. I consider Myers, Girgs, and, realistically, Hodgson, part of the new core.

I would like Miller and Ott to stick around to help the young guys transition for another season or two, at least.

Moulson, I think, should be traded for someone young with upside.

I could see Stafford being traded for a small return just to move him somewhere else, maybe using that pick (assuming it's a pick) and someone like Ennis for a Hodgson/Kassian style trade.

I guess, other than the five I mentioned initially, I think anyone is up on the block, and I'd rather see a lot more warm bodies in return than just picks...unless it's a 2015 first rounder.

Yep, I like this analysis. I know we're in last place but really this is our third season of the rebuild and there are key players emerging that I don't want traded. The list is fairly short but I really don't want Gus, Myers, Risto or Zadarov gone from the team. I would almost put Hodgson on that list as well. Everyone else can be part of a deal and some I would miss more than others but don't trade the previously mentioned building blocks.

  4. As far as Toffoli for a rental forward in Matt Moulson: LA fans would riot. He's still a very highly regarded prospect who hasn't broken through just yet. We'd be more likely to target the next crop of forwards they have behind Pearson and Toffoli. If we could get Linden Vey that would be awesome.

Could we toss in a 2nd rounder from this year as well to help sweeten the pot? We have so many 2nd and you see so many traded at the deadline that we should be able to package some things together. TM just has to identify who he wants to go after. As for Toffoli I don't know much more than his stat line and I'm not up on Kings prospects but if he is worth trading for then we could try Moulson plus some pick(s).

  5. Jake Virtanen was tested on both his forward and backwards skating times today ahead of the Top Prospects game. He was tops in both categories for all players tested today. He also was 2nd in the fastest weave time with the puck. He has 42pts in 43gp this season and is a 5'11" RW ranked 9th by central scouting. If we end up with another first round pick in the middle somewhere he could be a great kid to target. He has a late 1996 b-day for this draft being just about 1 month away from being eligible for next years draft.

Not another undersized winger. Isn't Ennis enough? Or do we consider him a centre now? Either way I don't want two guys in our top 6 under 6 foot. Not in today's NHL.

  6. You know if Edm drafts #1 as long as we have #2 we're fine. To be honest if the Oilers take Reinhart, that actually gives us the ability to ransom off Ekblad and still get a top 5 pick.

    Regardless, I'd trade players for 2015 1st rounders not 2014 1st rounders.

As I said before, I really think that's easier said than done.

  7. No not that. I mean instead of say, Miller for a number one in 2014, say Miller for a 1st rnd in 2015.

I think this is easier said than done. If casual fans already realize 2015 is a much better draft than '14, I would think every other NHL scout and GM knows this. I doubt too many want to part with their pick in 2015.

  8. It was Kypreos, I believe. The comment was actually a really quick one he said without any emphasis. I do remember whoever it was saying "he won't accept a trade to Canada" and nothing further. Which is why I'm lead to believe he would've been smart and put only the Canadian teams that might trade for him on the list.

The NHL implemented its lottery because of tanking, as well.

As far as "are we okay with this?" I think it's split. Some posters/fans are, some aren't. There are some who don't know about McDavid and might be okay with it if they knew.

I definitely am. McDavid (and even Eichel) is a world class talent that you will not acquire if you don't get him through the draft. This team, this FRANCHISE, is dying for a player like that to take them to the promised land. It'd be smart to try to position yourself to get him. Obviously it's not a guarantee is being in last only gives you a 25% chance (but it does guarantee you one of McDavid or Eichel). And then other teams are likely to tank, too.

Yep, there will be more than just one or two teams full on tank mode next year.

  9. Except for Girgensons. Unless he could get monumental returns for that kid there is no way he's up for trade. Personally I would accept getting rid of Nolan first (although Nolan may be influencing Girgensons level of play at the moment) before I would consider moving Girgensons. He just has.. it.

His chemistry with Moulson seems to be pretty good too.

I love these moves. At least it removes questions from the franchise and now allows us to begin evaluating real moves. We're going to see what can happen within the next month when people are moved or not.

I would say the same for Zadarov.

  10. If there's a second rounder on the table and Miller doesn't have any intention of re-signing, I absolutely trade him. Something is better than nothing.

Agreed. IMO I just don't see him re-signing with us. Could be wrong but a guy that age with no real family ties here that sold his house last year, I just don't know why he wouldn't want to go to a team with a chance next year. Also, based on some of TM interviews, it sounds like they want to tank this year and next and then start to be competitive after the 2015 draft (which I completely agree with). Wasn't there a quote somewhere saying the trade deadline can even manipulate that? I think the market is soft for goalies but we will still make the trade for something and bottom out over the next two years. I'm sure he will be acquiring young pieces over the next year and a half but no quick fixes from what I've heard (thank God).

  11. I nabbed this from the NHL article about the hires.

    Tingles.

Wow, great catch, thanks for that. I'm so excited about what we can do over the next decade. We've got some real nice young building blocks (especially those two 1st from last year) plus a boat load of picks over the next two years. Now that it appears we have a legit front office, the sky is the limit. This really is a new era in Sabres history. I know I'm buckled in and ready for the ride....

  12. Doesn't it?

Good: We should build a hotel and a parking garage across the street.

Better: With a bar to watch games.

Pegula: WITH TWO ###### ICE RINKS ON TOP!

Good: We should replace our head coach and GM.

Better: With some good honest names in Sabres history, like LaFontaine and Nolan.

Pegula: AND THAT GUY FROM MIRACLE!

This made me smile. I never lost faith in TPegs. Just felt he didnt' know enough hockey ppl when he bought the team and therefore made the wrong choice to stick with Darcy. I think he's learned his lesson and look at our front office right now, wow. Look, it's still going to take a couple of years to get the on ice product turned around but boy does the future look bright. Long live Tpegs!!!!!

  13. I'm really curious to see if he brings in new scouting guys (like Kevin Devine) before the draft, or if he keeps the current staff. I have a preference to keep Devine around, but if Tim's bread and butter is scouting, he may have other ideas.

I'm also curious to see where the head coach position goes.

This is all in addition to key player movement (Miller, Moulson, Ott).

I really hope we keep Devine around. But as you said who knows what he does, other than TPegs and Patty, he's the boss now.
