To the 3 people who voted for Matthews please explain why?

Is he a faster skater? Is he a better playmaker? Is he better in his own zone? Is he a better goal scorer? I’ll grant that he is better in the faceoff circle.

So far this season Jack has more goals, more assists, thus more points.  His plus/minus is better, he has more GWG, they are even in blocks, and Jack has more hits. Jack also has more PPG and leads the NHL with 17 even strength goals (Matthews has 14).

I'd like to see a few more years of this before you can definitively say Eichel is better. The fact that Matthews is 'slumping' at 1 PPG still means one helluva hockey player. I think it's more likely that Matthews improves on his PPG than Eichel is to keep his torrid pace up.

  2. I joined the military in 2004 and have moved around the country quite a bit and dealt with all sorts of natural disasters. I lived in Ohio from 04-08 and nothing too bad other than nasty wind and midwest cold. I lived in VA for 3 years and other than some really nasty snowstorms in 08-11 it wasn't worse than Buffalo snow storms, except VA doesn't know how to deal with it like back home and stores would be closed for days if a foot of snow fell. I spent 4 years in California and went through a lot. Flooding from so much winter rain the first year to severe drought the next three years, wild fires were so close that ash was falling and it smelled like a campfire for weeks at a time, been through a few earthquakes as well. Spent time in TX, flash flooding, severe thunderstorms with nasty hail happened all the time.

I have now lived back in Dayton OH since 2016  and nothing can compare (for me anyway) to the Memorial Day 2019 tornadoes late at night. We had something like 15 confirmed touch downs. I was in bed at 1030 and couldn't sleep because there was so much thunder and lightning, my wife came running into the room saying the tornado sirens were going off, grabbed the kids and my dog and went into the basement. we have a walkout basement so not fully underground but good enough. An F4 went by our neighborhood, within a quarter mile, it was so loud and my house was shaking, things kept hitting my basement door and i was legit terrified. fortunately it barely missed us but other neighborhoods weren't so lucky. Whole neighborhoods and businesses were destroyed throughout the area because there were so many tornadoes. Amazingly only one person died. an 80 year old man sleeping in bed had a car thrown into his house. there has been a tornado here every year since I moved here in 2016 and they have been getting worse. we had several close calls.

I think its an excellent 'holiday'.  My boys start talking about decorating the house for halloween shortly after Labor Day.  Disappointed to see slightly dwindling numbers.  Again, I think the weather is playing a roll around my neighborhood tonight.

My complaint is you see less and less classic candy out there.  This year we got zero: whoppers, buttercups, butterfingers, nerds, tutsi-rolls or those individually wrapped carmels I love.  I think probably 25% of the entire haul is exclusively regular chips and Kit Kats.  #firstworldproblems

I mean, if you were going to make a candy power ranking, Kit Kat is top 5!

  4. I had my house decked out with orange and purple lights since Oct 1st. Scores me points with my wife and kids as they love that stuff. The Halloween lights come down today and then I start planning the xmas lights.

I really couldn't watch this game closely because I was watching with family, but it was enjoyable to see goals and Jack points! Seemed like a lot of the guys who had rougher games were still rewarded with stats. Reminded me of the first two games against the Canadiens last year. Like, a lot. In fact, the last two games against these two opponents (CBJ, MTL) were eerie in their similarities to the October games against them last year. In a good way, because the Sabres were pretty good early last year.

    Two more points bby

Seems like Dahlin takes a lot of penalties.

Olofsson scores a lot. He's pretty quiet at even strength for now. But not bad, per say.

Ralph really seems to use the third line (Mitts) sparingly. But I haven't looked at the numbers, it just feels that way. Seems justified based on what I've seen from them. Haven't hurt us, but haven't done too much to help since game 1. We'll see how their games change going forward

Being in WNY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> being anywhere else on earth

Hate seeing Montreal red take over the lower bowls on TV. Lotta empty seats there, I'd have loved to be sitting in one of them cheering on our boys

That was an interesting selection of players to play the OT power play. Miller now has two Eichel-like cross ice feeds for Johansson goals. His Zhitnik-esque shot is more endearing than frustrating

Eichel spent some shifts looking funky, and others looking like the best he's ever been.

Keep smilin' and keep scorin' Jeffrey.

Florida up next - ***** I hate Sabres-Panthers games as much as I love Sabres-Habs games

no kidding, what's the mental block we have with the Panthers? it really is annoying

I’m in the gta.  Don’t have cable so I have nhl.tv and have watched all of the others.  Even if it was Toronto I could maybe see it but Montreal?  Says I’m blacked out for the area.  Wish it was like Sunday ticket where you actually get all games including local

they must have changed their policy then, I just got Sunday Ticket for the 1st time this year and the local (Bengals, Browns) are always blacked out and you have to watch the local channel that it is broadcasted on. I was thinking about getting NHL.tv, is it worth it other than the blackout of course?

Gee whiz guys, we've played 3 games, have 5 out of 6 points accumulated and we're in 1st place. Can we calm down the "our guys suck" routine for at least a little bit. This isn't the 2013-14 Sabres. If we were the 0-3 Sharks and Stars, I'd get it but we're not.

there's nothing wrong with making observations from the game. Vesey was awful in the Columbus game, that's why it's being talked about it the Columbus game thread. If someone starts a "Vesey is terrible" thread, then yeah, i would say that's a little over the top because it's so early.

The idea that Bosa should have played a highly dangerous sport in order to show that he cares about a brand and profit center valued in the billions -- an entity that gave him precisely nothing in terms of legitimate compensation -- and thereby risk his own ability to earn tens of millions of dollars is ... laughable.

He signed a commitment to play for Ohio State and if he was actually fully healed and cleared to play, then I can understand the frustration of the fans and teammates who were unhappy. But if he was still injured and was advised not to play, then that's fine. While he didn't get compensated beyond a free education, he also got the opportunity to play for one of the best college programs in the country and showcase his talent that helped get him drafted to make his millions.

Bosa went to Ohio State if you're wondering

Bosa opting out of the college playoffs and bowl game was not received well by Buckeye fans here. Guy I work with and I were talking about this earlier today. He said "If Bosa would've cared more about his team (Buckeyes) than his draft status, they wouldve beaten Oklahoma and Mayfield wouldn't have had the chance to plant the flag."  There were whispers that he was cleared to play but he chose to sit. I for one thought it was funny, Mayfield needed a good humbling and he got exactly that.

Vesey is slow.  He can't keep up with Mitts and Sheary.  On the PK he can't close the gap like Girgs and Larry do which leads to extended D zone time.  He also turns his back to the defenseman on the wall and gets pushed off the puck or loses possession when they pinch. He and Vlad are negatives due to the fact that do not bring anything positive to those they play with.  It is almost like playing shorthanded.

Vesey was not only slow last night, but I feel like everytime i saw him, he was just lumbering up the boards, not getting into the coners and rarely put himself in a postition for a shot. I don't think I saw him in front of the net once

I live about an hour from C-bus and will be there with two of my friends. Only issue is that the Sabres are 0-5 in the games I have attended. Hopefully that changes tonight. I was very skeptical going into this season but the amazing start has me tingling a little bit

Aaaaand of course, they just can't win a friggin game in Columbus for me...again.

    Few thoughts from ice level.

    • Jackets were pretty amped especially after starting 0-2 and getting thumped by the Pens
    • I wouldn't say the Sabres were terrbile in the 1st as much as I'd say that the Jackets were just playing good hockey
    • Ullmark faced a lot of shots and looked pretty sharp
    • Dahlin took a few bad penalties that cost us, though one was a pretty solid Premiere League dive
    • Eichel wasn't super sharp but not bad either, except his giveaway in OT right in front of me
    • Mojo's play was a pleasant surprise (i didnt get to see the 1st two games), he was one of the few skating hard every shift
    • Larsson Girgs KO were aight, they definitely get too much time on the ice
    • Vesey is worthless, will likely be a fan whipping boy soon. Sheary and Mittelstadt were always hustling but Vesey was slow an not interested the whole night
    • Olofsson seems to have 'it' he's strong on the puck, knows where to go to get a scoring chance, had the PPG goal late to tie it, kid could have over 30 this year
    • Jackets goal song is awful but the cannon is pretty cool
    • there was an 8 year old kid trash talking the sabres and yelling all night, screaming at the refs...it was hilarious
    • there were tickets selling in the upper bowl corners for $7...my double vodka 7-UP set me back $22

Upon reflection this morning I think the best way to sum the game up is this ...

Every single player was asked to do very specific things and were put into a positon to not only perform the things they were asked to do, but put into a position to succeed at it.  Not one player was asked to do something they could not do.

Granted it was one game, but the above is squarly on RaKru.  The Sabres players were coached to win and they listened.  This is some thing that has not happened in a very long time.  RaKru took the roster as constructed and used it perfectly.

I stared at RaKru for 2 minutes before I figured it out. I'm an idiot...

We will not see the roster that the Sabre's ice until 01Nov at the earliest. There will be changes and adjustments. Enjoy the hockey to the best of your ability in the meantime. Don't let this this short period of time ruin your life or your love of the Sabre's.

Unfortunately the last 6-7 years have been ruining my love for the Sabres but it hasn't consumed my life lol. I have been trending towards apathy, neat if they win and whatever when they lose. Last years epic collapse post November did a number on me. I haven't renewed my NHL app yet, taking the fair weather approach and I hate to admit that but as mentioned by many others, the lineup doesn't inspire confidence that this team will be anything above 79-83 points as their ceiling.

  14. Other than the tank years that we knew were going to be bad, this is the least excited I have ever been for a Sabres season. I have been bummed since last season's collapse, teetering on apathy. I wanted to be excited with a new coach but then I see Sobotka on the 2nd line and Erod an extra. They're making it hard to care, I don't even know if I am renewing my NHL app this year to watch.

Oloffson, Vesey, Johansson, and Okposo will not score more than Reinhart. Skinner will have more than Eichel.

  16. Crazy how much crap Allen takes even in a win. Biggest knock on him coming out of college and last season was his accuracy being under 60%. He goes out, comes back from a rough first half to help win the game and finishes with ~64% competion. All the experts said that accuracy is the hardest QB trait to fix. He's still fairly raw and will have bad passes and make bad decisions, but, that can be fixed.

I would say more of the same, but maybe slightly better.

To reach his potential, he needs to get quite a but stronger/bigger, that takes time.  It's pretty tough to add 25 pounds of muscle in 5 months, so I'm not expecting that.  That often takes guys a few years.

I'll echo what Randall said, and add that I'm not convinced that he has the "hockey IQ" to be a high level NHLer.  He could top out as a bottom-6 guy if that part of his game doesn't develop as well.  I wouldn't been shocked if he ended up a 15 goal, 25-30 point 3rd/4th liner.

True story. The average guy working out a 4 day split and eating properly can gain 1.5-2lbs a month of muscle. TT being a pro with access to trainers etc, could probably hit 2.5-3lbs of muscle a month and that's really pushing it. I can see him starting the season maybe 12lbs heavier than last season, 15lbs if he really trains hard.

Unaccustomed to losing and no longer a rookie, Dahlin told The Associated Press on Thursday he feels better prepared and is far more driven to help transform the Sabres into contenders.

"I'm putting more pressure on myself. We're going to be a winning team and be in the playoffs," Dahlin said. "I think everyone is putting more pressure on ourselves now, and we're ready to go."

Just read this today. Dahlin showing some leadership quality and taking responsibility. I like to see that he's doing that at such a young age. How quickly does he get an 'A' on his sweater?
