Thanks @Zamboni for once again making this list. It's a good parallel to the other ongoing threads on Sabres' draft futility.

Here's what I expect in the 2nd round: 50% NHL hit rate -- you get a player! At least for a few seasons you get a guy. There are very few stars on this list, so I can't say we should have our ROR, Kucherov, or Aho. But this is how you fill out a roster.

And... we did not. No picks early on was GMRegier was trading 2nds for rentals in our charges to 8th of 9th. Then McCabe, who is probably the second-best pick in his draft after Severson. Win there. But then we're in the midst of the tank and have a surplus of 2nds and we get nothing. Maybe the best all-around pick in JT Compher (who is now underperforming in Colorado) who we traded, and the rest: garbage. The trouble is you look at those 2013-2014 drafts where we have 6 seconds, and there's not much there. Aube-Kuble, Montour, Dvorak all would have been nice instead of the Karabacek.

But that was supposed to be the stockpile! We were suffering, tanking, and those 6 seconds should've been a young core of a lineup. Nothing for it (and yes, we got ROR out of it, but gave up a ton for him).

What really amazes me is by drafting so poorly -- look at all the 2nd rounders we ended up having to acquire via trade. We've had 'em all! Larsson, Montour, Elie, Carrier, Lehner. And signed later: Dalton Smith.

We gave up "a ton" for Ryan O'Reilly???

Mikhail Grigorenko, Nikita Zadorov, JT Compher and a 2nd round pick...I'd do that trade every single time and not think twice about it.

The only player they have left from that trade is Compher, who is a bottom-6 player.

  2. If you told me a couple years ago that the Sabres would be in dead last and have a chance to grab Shayne Gostisbehere and Nikitia Gusev on the waiver-wire, I would have told you that you're crazy. (Well, I might have believed the "Sabres being in dead last" part, but not the other part.)

... I am not even joking but Seth Jarvis (he got put in the "other risers" section which was basically the equivalent of honorable mention)

    and also Dylan Holloway.

Seth Jarvis had 7 goals and 11 points in 9 AHL games...Jack Quinn has 1 goal and 4 points in 9 AHL games.

Who knows who will be better, but it's just another reminder that the Quinn pick was too high.

I don't want Hall back next season or most of the other UFAs. I see Linus in the longer term plans so it's different. I wouldn't mind the Cozens and Mittelstadts and Dahlins on the team to find some confidence down the stretch. I don't understand why the games have to be diminished to zero value.

The goal should always be to make the playoffs or acquire talent/improve the roster...we only have a chance to do one of those things, take it!

Those players can all find confidence without ruining the opportunity to get a top player in the draft.

(We're so far in the basement that it probably doesn't even matter if we win a couple games.)

If Chad is right, I don't think Rutherford is building our roster.

And even if he was building our roster, I don't think he'd treat it the same way as he'd treat a Penguins roster trying to win now and wring more cups out of Crosby/Malkin.

But this rumor says that KA would retain final authority on making trades and roster moves

I hope you're right (or "Chad" is), because that is not the kind of roster building we need.

I like the idea of the hire, but I got thinking about that and it got me worried.

It's also an entertainment product. I enjoyed myself last game. Maybe I get hit by a bus this summer. I wouldn't mind enjoying the last 20 games.

At the cost of a top-3 pick? No thanks. This team needs talent, not meaningless wins to appease a couple fans.

If this is how you feel, you might as well not trade Taylor Hall or anyone else.

I'd sign him to be the #1 with the caveat being we bring in a backup with a not unreasonable chance of pushing for the 1 position at any given stretch. As this season has shown, you need quality behind your starter.

I'd only deal him if it was a can't miss offer - I'd rather have a shot at winning games than a 2nd round pick.

Winning games this year does nothing for this organization...a 2nd round pick is much more valuable to this team right now.

I’d like Ullmark back on a 2 year deal...low end #1 money.  If he doesn’t want to come back...sell sell sell at the TDL.

That would be a perfect bridge to Luukkonen.

Too soon?  He’ll be 26 in a few months.  Are we giving prospects until 30 to prove themselves?

Goalies? Yes, they get much longer. Most goalies don't hit their ceiling until they're 27-28 years old.

Cal Petersen is 26 years old (he'll be 27 this October) and he's just starting to come into his own as a starting goalie for the Kings.

Ben Bishop went through the same kind of development path.

Dominik Hasek wasn't a starter until he was like 29 years old or something like that.

Again, goalies develop at a slower pace and require a lot more time than any other position...which is why we need to be patient with Luukkonen and Portillo.

    NHL

    Ristolainen - signed through 2021/22 @ 5.4

    Miller - signed through 2021/22 @ 3.875

Dahlin - RFA, my guess is 5 years at 5.4

    Jokiharju - RFA

    AHL/NHL

    Borgen - RFA

    Bryson - signed through 2021/22

Important UFAs - McCabe (IR) and Montour

Other considerations:  The expansion draft.  Protect Dahlin, Ristolainen and Jokiharju; that leaves Miller and Borgen exposed.

Lineup for 2021/22 based on who is here

    ??????(McCabe?) Ristolainen

    Dahlin ?????? (Borgen?)

    Jokiharju  Miller (Bryson?)

The simple solution is hope Seattle doesn't take Borgen (or give them an incentive to take MIller), go young and cheap, except keep McCabe.  Depending on the coach this could work. However, this would be a PR mistake and an on ice mistake.  Bryson isn't defensively ready for the NHL and a Joki Bryson pairing would get crushed physically.  It also depends on how management feels about Borgen's future.  Is he just a place holder until Samuelsson is ready, someone they don't mind losing in expansion or do they envision him as Dahlin long-term partner.  My guess is as a placeholder for Samuelsson.

The aggressive solution is to keep Dahlin, protect Risto and then traded him, and try to trade Miller.  Protect Jokiharju and let Seattle take Borgen and start with basically Dahlin and Jokiharju and will in the rest with trades and UFAs.  This is the worst scenario IMHO. What UFA want to come here other then guys just trying to hang on to their NHL careers.  We also don't have the ammo to fill the rest with trades.

The best solution starts with re-sign Dahlin, Jokiharju and McCabe.  Keep Risto as well.  My guess is there is no market for Miller and he becomes the 7th D to finish out his deal.  Hopefully Seattle takes a forward from us (like Asplund) and leaves Borgen.  This leaves KA with only one job and that is find a partner for Dahlin.  There will be some good cap casualties to shop from.  Maybe Wash will part with Nick Jensen (2 years left @ 2.5) or Adam Larsson can be signed, but this where to start looking

    McCabe Risto

    Dahlin Jensen

    Jokiharju Borgen

    Miller

While looking more like the status quo then an upgrade, we come away with a much more balance unit, featuring 3 defensive D and a more physical presence.  With two top pairings, we can take pressure off the 3rd unit until they show they are ready for it.

Why would Borgen be a "placeholder" for Samuelsson...one is a RHD and the other is a LHD.

If anything, Miller and McCabe are the placeholders.

They all played for Rochester, under Taylor.

Olofsson had 30 goals in 66 games under Taylor.
Bryson played 61 games for Taylor last year

Borgen played 2 full seasons and part of a third in Rochester, under Taylor.

Taylor was one of the few bright spots of Boterill regime as he was key in re-establishing our AHL team.

Olofsson stepped in and did that because of his development in Sweden, playing against men for years.

Bryson and Borgen spent significant time on top-end NCAA programs, then both came to the Amerks and looked great from the jump.

I'm not trying to crap on the guy, I'd take him over Krueger at this point but, again, he couldn't win a playoff game with good teams.

Add Kaliyev and Bjornfot and I’ll take it. Would prefer Byfield over Turcotte though.

I think you could get one or the other, but not all four pieces.

As for Byfield, I'd take him over Turcotte too, but I don't think the Kings would do it.

There's a lot of discussion about trading Eichel to the Kings for their young talent.

Checking in with that young talent: Byfield, Turcotte, Bjornfot, and Byfield are all assigned to the Kings AHL squad, the Ontario Reign.

The Ontario Reign's record currently is 1-10-2.

Byfield has played in all 13 games, has 1 goal, 7pts, and is a -15.

Turcotte has played 7 games, has 1 assist and is a -3.

Kaliyev has played 13 games has 1 goal, 6 pts, and is a -2.

Bjornfot has played 1 game, no points, but is a -2.

Vilardi has been on the Kings roster, and he scores a goal every 3 games or so, so he has the potential to for 25 goals and maybe 60 points, which isn't too bad.

So what happens if the Sabres trade for a combo of these young players? They wait.  None of the young players are ready yet.  None of them are driving their team forward yet.  They all look to need another couple of seasons in the AHL.

And if Vilardi is included in the trade? Well he replaces Eichel as the #1 center this year.

So trading with the Kings brings the Sabres a #1 center with a lower ceiling than Eichel, and prospects that might improve the team in 2 or 3 years.

In other words, the Sabres lose the trade. And they would brutally lose it if the young players don't develop as planned, which is a real possibility.

Then I guess they better make sure they develop whatever kids they get in return, because they are most likely the biggest asset in the package.

  12. If we're trading Eichel, I'm sending him to Los Angeles and trying to get Alex Turcotte and Gabe Vilardi, plus some other pieces.

That gives us Turcotte, Cozens and Vilardi as a center spine...and they still have Eichel, Kopitar, Byfield and Kupari as a center spine.

Plus, I'd add Matty Beniers to our center spine in this upcoming draft...he's a future Selke winner.

Not surprised.  After seeing Ralph's comment about Skinner “measuring his whole career on goals”, this petty bitter old man decided Taylor was a threat and fired him for it.  Disgusting.

Ralph must have a pretty weak ego to be scared of a coach who couldn't win an AHL playoff game with a stacked veteran roster.

Never understood the move.  I recall some weird comments about Rochester too focused on winning and not player development.  What’s wrong with both?  What’s wrong with having your  players develop and do it in a winning environment?

Uhlmark, Olofsson, Borgen and Bryson are products of Taylor’s teams. Asplund too.  He spent time trying to rehab Mitts and Tage - two players mishandled from the start.

Too much change and you lose the good with the bad.

Olofsson is a product of Sweden.

Borgen and Bryson are a product of the NCAA.

That was pretty dumb. Couple open goals there too, they just couldn't lift the puck

I thought Luce held his own after looking nervous early on

Feels like Quinn might get his first goal soon

Quinn scoring a goal would be nice, given Seth Jarvis has 7 goals and 11 points in 9 games...Jarvis was taken just shortly after we took Quinn.

(Zayde Wisdom, a 4th round pick in 2020, has 6 goals and 8 points in 7 games.)

I'd like to see Tim Murray's forward acquisition list.

I have a strong suspicion we need to somehow get Botterill and Murray to have a "complete roster" love child.

    Just a hunch......

It starts with Jack Eichel, Ryan O'Reilly, Sam Reinhart, Evander Kane and Victor Olofsson...which is pretty damn good.

Certainly better than Botterill bringing in Jacob Josefsson, Benoit Pouliot and Jordan Nolan.

I still wish Murray and Bylsma were given one more year to fix the defense.

  16. 22 minutes ago, LGR4GM said:

Tim Murray couldn't draft to save his life. We would have no prospect pool and sure we might make the playoffs once or twice but we would have made no impact.

Neither could Botterill, and Kevyn Adams just took Jack Quinn over much better prospects...so there's that.

The only good players on this team, aside from Hall, were brought in by Tim Murray.

I'd rather have a team with Ryan O'Reilly, Evander Kane and Robin Lehner, than this soft-as-sh*t garbage we're getting from this team.
