  1. Fire Botterill, move Krueger into the front office, hire Babcock.

Sadly 50 mill is chump change for the Loafs.

It’s also sad that TM’s best move is screwing a 2nd franchise in addition to us.

Murray's best move is getting us Eichel and Reinhart, and stealing O'Reilly for peanuts.

Which is at least three times more than I can say for Jason Botterill. (I'd give him Skinner, but he doesn't come close to what O'Reilly would provide.)

Now we get to see what Sheldon Keefe can do.

I would bet he's going to be an excellent coach, especially with the young team they have.

I wanted him in Buffalo so bad when we hired Housley, and again when we hired Krueger...he's going to be a good one, and now is a perfect time for him to take over.

  3. As a human being, I hope he's okay and lives a great life after hockey.

As a Sabres fan, I hope "after hockey" comes sooner than later.

The guy needs to retire. He's one bad hit away from a life changing injury. He needs to think of his family, he has plenty of money to live a great life.

    Put him in player development.

What should be our expectations for this group/line going forward?  Is this line the team’s possible Achilles Heal?  Would calling up Thompson at some point make the team better?

Right now those 4 players have 5 pts total (3 on the PP) in 6 games.  Mitts has 2 assists and Sheary has 2 goals and an assist.  Vesey and Erod have goose eggs.

I thought Mitts would be dramatically better this season and in some ways he is better.  I also thought playing with 2 proven depth wingers in Sheary and Vesey against better matchups would make them more effective.  So far nothing.  Obviously with 76 games remaining we have a long season in front of us, but I’m beginning to worry about this line.

We can’t rely on GLO to continue to play at their current level.  They will be fine, but we will need more secondary scoring and guys like Vesey, Mitts and Sheary need to add 15 goals each this season if we are to truly contend for the playoffs.

How can RK get these guys going?  How long will JBot wait to make a move to enhance this line if these guys remain ineffective?  I’m thinking after this West Coast road trip that if Sheary returns and the line remains ineffective, I can see Thompson recalled and someone like Vesey and Mitts benched with Erod centering Sheary and Thompson.

Benching Mittelstadt for Rodrigues? Lol, yeah, that's the solution. ?

Maybe it's the fact he's playing with 4th liners, like Vesey* and Rodrigues...give him better talent and he will look much better.

(Olofsson only scores on the power play, maybe he should be taken off the first line. /sarcasm)

*I expected big things from him this season, but he looks totally lost and like garbage.

I live in nj, so I dont know the local stations but found 550 on a commercial from the game last night. they said kruegar talks on Monday's with them

Does this channel have a set schedule for when they only talk sabres. I dont care about football or any other sports really.

It would be awesome if I could fill my work day with Sabres talk.

Is there any other stations that also talk about the Sabres

There are also Sabres podcasts. I'm not quite up-to-date on those as some might be, but I know they're out there.

Die By The Blade, Two In The Box, Charging Buffalo, Crossing Swords, Half-Hour Hockey Show (Kevin Sylvester)...there might be even more than that.

You can find them all on Twitter.

Here are some in my preferred order...

    Half-Hour Hockey Show: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/half-hour-hockey-show

    Beyond The Blade Podcast: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/beyond-the-blade

Two In The Box Instigator Podcast: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/chris-ostrander/the-instigator-podcast

    Charging Buffalo Podcast:

    Crossing Swords Podcast:

I don't typically listen to amateur podcasts, but some of these are insightful (especially Kevin Sylvester)...you might like them.

If you have an iPhone, they are all in the Podcasts app...plus some like Bob McKenzie, Puck Soup, Biscuits, Executive Suite, John Scott, Hockey Prospects, etc.

Fans here are still talking about numbered lines. RK says he doesn’t think that way. Is everyone dismissing that as coach speak or does he have a point?

It's nothing more than coach speak to keep everyone thinking they are all on the same level..."nobody is more important than the team."

He even says, "My brain just doesn't really work that way, trying to make sure that everybody understands they're important."

He has always avoided ranking players, because everyone is important to team success.

  7. Offense will come, defense will sort itself out...I need to see that our two goalies can carry this team when it's needed.

If that comes to fruition, I'll start thinking this team has a chance at the playoffs.

I really need Krueger to stop trying to protect Dahlin though. He should be playing over 20 minutes a night, in all situations.

EDIT: I also need to see Skinner show he doesn't need Eichel to be good...and I need Eichel to take another step forward, preferably as a goal-scorer.

  8. Jimmy Vesey.

It's only fitting he comes "back" and scores in his first game.

I really think he's going to have a big year...if he plays on the 3rd line he puts up his usual 17-20 goals, if he gets time with Eichel he pots 25+.

PS. Please don't "boo" the kid...that time passed a couple years ago, he's one of us now.

What happens when playing with Sobotka causes Skinner to lose his love for the game?

He'll lose it real quickly when he realized he made a massive mistake by re-signing with the Sabres, thinking he was going to be playing with Jack Eichel.

This coach is already off to an awful start.

What appears to be the starting line-up:

    Oloffson-Eichel-Reinhart

    Skinner-Johansson-Sobotka

    Vesey-Mittelstadt-Sheary

    Girgensons-Larsson-Rodrigues

    Okposo

    Dahlin-Miller

    McCabe-Ristolainen

    Scandella-Jokiharju

    Glimour

IR:  Montour will push out Jokiharju, Gilmour stays.  Bogosian.... we'll see.  Pilut starts in the AHL, but I think he comes up within a month and pushes out Scandella.  A Ristolainen trade resolves any jams, though Jokiharju appears to benefit from some AHL time and can pass through waivers unlike anyone else.

Only waiver wire pick-up I could foresee is Sprong-- given Botterill's history with the kid, and our pretty bad RW depth.  May be the move that kicks Mittelstadt into the AHL for some time.  Not really sure Rodrigues' spot is safe at all with that awful pre-season, though I'd much rather see the Okposo demotion be what happens.

Not really excited by 2nd line Sobotka, nor Reinhart with Eichel, but I'll give Krueger benefit of the doubt for a little while at least.  Glad Oloffson is getting the chance, and Vesey makes 3LW somewhat solid, even if he only shows up every few games.  Each line has playmakers, shooters, and some size.  Much better wingers than Mittelstadt had last year.  If Johansson looks like he did in pre-season at 2C for the rest of the season, I feel really good about the team this year.  I thought Thompson earned a spot over every other RW not named Reinhart personally, but he's also the only one who can pass through waivers so maybe that's mostly what it is.  Some extra chances for those other RWs to show whether they've got any gas left or not.

This whole concept is hilarious. He's not going to the AHL. Everyone might as well drop that now. It's just not happening.

And I can't see why claiming a winger would make Buffalo want to demote a 20 year old center.

This is total lunacy. (So is being upset about Reinhart playing with Eichel. Lol.)

Why would I do that when

    Olofsson - Eichel - Reinhart
    Skinner - Mitts - Davidsson
    Cederqvist - Cozens - Weissbach
    xxx - Asplund - xxx

    Dahlin - Borgen
    Samuelsson - Johnson
    Cronholm - Laaksonen

is surely going to be our cup winning roster in 2023?

But for real the answer is no just because the logistics of no longer having any prospects are impossible to overcome as an organization.

I would probably trade far more of them than most other Sabres fans would though for that guarantee.

I see it a little differently...

    Skinner - Eichel - Reinhart

    Olofsson - Mittelstadt - Cozens

    Davidsson - Asplund - Weissbach

    Ruotsalainen - Pekar - Murray

    Dahlin - Jokiharju

    Samuelsson - Laaksonen

    Johnson - Borgen

    Luukkonen

    Ullmark/Portillo

And yes, I think if those kids reach their potential, I see them as a very strong team.

I love Cozens on the wing as a legit power forward...you're not going to put him or Mittelstadt on the third line, they're top-6 players.

And no, I wouldn't trade any of our top prospects, Mittelstadt is going to be an elite #2 center. It's amazing how people have already given up on a 20 year old kid after one season in the NHL. He had garbage linemates and he was one year removed from HIGH SCHOOL. He is going to be just fine, and he will take a big step this season.

  12. The game is going to be MUCH better this year...but this is such a swing and a miss for the Sabres alumni.

I find it surprising how many of these lists are neglecting Geoff Sanderson. It’s a travesty when greatness isn’t appreciated.

Wanna feel old? His kid is draft-eligible next summer and expected to be a first round pick.

  13. I love the invite of Sebastian Vidmar. He was looking like a highly sought after free agent after his sophomore and junior seasons when he put up a combined 71 points in 71 games. He ended up having a bad senior season and fell off the map a little bit. I think he could be a really good player for the Amerks, or even the Cyclones.

Big kid. 6-3, 210. Playmaking LW. He's a Swede (of course he is). He played four years at Union.

You can find him doing this quite often...

He has a nice shot too, he just doesn't use it enough...coaching staff at Union always tried to get him to shoot more.

I don't care if they have to pay double his cap hit to get him off the team. He's the worst hockey player I've seen in an NHL sweater. (No I'm not counting meat heads like Peters or Ray)

I'd take Rob Ray over Vladimir Sobotka...at least Ray would stick up for his teammates.

Obviously this isn’t news to Jbot.  With Bogo and Pilut possibly unable to start the season, the acquisitions of Jokiharju, and Gilmour make more sense.

As to LTIR, you don’t really get credit until you have used the entire 81.5.  In our case that will be in March.  Also we need to clear up cap for Dahlin’s bonuses and for operating budget.  This is the first step in more changes to come.

I really hope John Gilmour doesn't have to be depended on in an NHL role, he's not very good at it.

He'd be deep on my list...Dahlin, Ristolainen, Montour, Miller, McCabe, Jokiharju, Pilut, Borgen, Bogosian, Scandella, Nelson.

I'd put them all ahead of Gilmour.

  15. Why? Who are you going to sit?

Skinner, Reinhart, Olofsson, Vesey, Sheary, Johansson, Rodrigues? No chance. That's the top-9 minus Eichel and Mittelstadt.

The only place he could potentially fit is on the 4th line with Larsson and Okposo, in Girgenson's spot.

I'd rather see Pominville and Gionta move into player development, instead of Adam Mair and Krys Barch...hire some guys who have some credibility.

(They both have love for the organizations and the cities, Pominville played for the Amerks and Gionta grew up in Rochester as an Amerks fan.)

  16. Kyle Okposo on the power play? Barf. Same with Evan Rodrigues.

1st unit: Eichel, Skinner, Reinhart, Vesey, Dahlin.

2nd unit: Mittelstadt, Johansson, Olofsson, Sheary, Ristolainen. (If Risto is gone, it's Montour.)

Or some mix of those 10 players.

You put your 8 most offensively inclined forwards, and 2 most offensively inclined defensemen, out on the power play.

Guys like Okposo and Rodrigues do not belong on the power play...they can't score goals and they're not good distributors.

  17. I believe Jake McCabe, Evan Rodrigues and Linus Ullmark will all be gone by this time next summer.

The Athletic did an article how the majority of players in arbitration cases usually get traded within a year or so.

It won't surprise me the least bit to see them all gone before the 2020-2021 season....unless they have incredible seasons, especially Ullmark.

(At this point, they've all been replacement-level players...but I hope they improve and end up here long-term.)
