Khudobin, Talbot, Kuemper if he could be had, Raanta from the Coyotes, Pavel Francouz from the Czech Republic

    Matt Murray is also available

Pavel Francouz is Colorado's backup and I believe they just signed him to an extension not too long ago.

If the Sabres don't draft Askarov (doubt it), they should sign Holtby.

Even if they draft Askarov (I hope they don't), they still need to sign a veteran like Holtby.

Askarov won't be ready for at least 2-3 years.

We have 8 significant RFAs; 5 of which are current key players for the team (numbers from Capfriendly)

    1) Samson Reinhart - Q Offer 3.75 w Arb rights - 1st Line RW;  Arbitration case:  4 of 5 season w 20 goals plus; 3 straight 50+ points seasons

    2) Montour - Q offer 3.525 w Arb rights - Top 4 type D; Arbitration case: 32 and 35 pt seasons before playing wrong side last season.  Still was a +13 on a bad team.

    3) Ullmark - Q offer 1.325 w Arb rights - Starting goalie; 2.69 gaa and .915 sv % were career bests and solidly mid-level of starting NHL goalies

    4) Olofsson - Q offer 700K w Arb rights - Top 2 line LW; 42 pts in 54 games as a rookie; 2nd in rookie goals and points. Projects as a 30 goal scorer in a full season

    5) Kahun - Q offer 832,500 w Arb rights - Likely 2nd line RW; 2 NHL seasons saw him scorer 12+ goals and 30+ points each season.  @ 100K per point, that's a $3 mill player.

The other 3 are important depth players or kids fighting for roster spots

    6) Lazar - Q offer 700K w Arb rights - 4th line center or LW

    7) Mittelstadt - Q offer 832,500 - Possible 3rd line center or W

    8.) Thompson - Q offer 832,500 - Possible/likely 3rd line RW

IMHO how KA manages the cost if the 5 key RFAs will make or break our off-season.  The cheaper he gets these guys this off-season helps maximize our actual $ and cap $ to improve the team.  However, not locking up Reinhart and Olofsson to long-term could have serious negative consequences long-term.

Back in April the Athletic projected the contracts for our key RFAs as follows. (please try not to laugh at the 1st 3 deals)

Reinhart 8yrs @ 8.744 per season; VO 4 years @ 4.977; Montour 3 years @ 4.802; Kahun and 2 yr @ 2.912.  He also estimated that Ullmark gets a deal similar to CBJ's Korpisalo at 2 yrs @ 2.8.  I think only the Ullmark and Kahun deals speak of reality.  The rest are way over inflated IMHO given COVID, the recession and about half the NHL going to austerity measures.

Here is how big the difference can be.  The Q offers to the 5 total 10.1325 million, but with arbitration rights that number is unrealistic on the low end.  Using the Athletic numbers the 5 RFAs would cost 24.235 million.  Given our current 47 mill in cap obligations and internal cap we can't afford those numbers and field a team. That number is also unrealistic given the economic reality in the NHL right now.  The truth lies somewhere in the middle.  I think if KA can get all 5 on 2 year deals I think he'd do well to come in at around 18.8 (6.5 for SR, 2.8 for LU, 2.5 for DK, 3 for VO and 4 for BM).  Anything under these numbers would be a steal.  I like the idea of 2 year deals because it add some stability without obligating the team forever, especially when I believe that all but Reinhart (and to a lesser extent VO) are replaceable if they want to much money.

If I'm KA, I'm re-signing Montour and trading Risto, but time and market conditions will tell if he agrees.  Managing the RFAs well should enable the team to afford to re-sign Larsson and maybe also had another middle six forward.

Manage the RFAs poorly and we'll be a status quo team hoping that improvement is a result of the development of our kids and the rebound in Skinner's scoring touch.

Why would I laugh at 4 years for $4.9M for Olofsson? You're not getting him signed for cheaper than Nikita Gusev signed for ($4.5M).

Edmundson was someone I had my eye on as a PK defensive LD.

Good move if he signs, and they have the Cap space.

Yup, that's one who would've been a good get for the Sabres...allowing Bryson to stay in Rochester another year.

A trade for either won't fix us without additional signings because contrary to what people want every year nobody's going to trade us good players for some load of crap you guys want off the roster. To get guys like this you will have to give up decent players and thus create new holes in the roster.

I read that Domi might only cost a 2nd round pick...which, if that is the case, would be a solid deal.

I would rather have Anderson, although I agree that he won't come cheap, either in trade assets or in the contract he'll want.  And I think CBJ would only trade him to save cap space, so they won't be interested in Montour or Risto.

Maybe Mittlestadt, a #2 pick and Borgen or Samuelsson for Anderson?

Way too much for a guy who had 4 points in 26 games on a playoff team...I don't get the love for this injury prone headache of a 3rd liner.

Domi is the perfect fit...he can transition to the wing or to the 3C when Cozens is ready.

I'd personally go for Anderson as he fits the true power foward with speed and grit that we can throw on Jack's RW.  If we keep Reinhart drop him to second line and let him drive a line with Cozens. I think Cozens can become the Sabres Cirelli in a few years.

For an 8th overall pick, he needs to be better than Cirelli...he needs to be a 60-70 point player, not a 40-50 point player.

I think his skating is very good.  His straight line top speed might be average though.  His short area quickness, acceleration and agility are great.  Overall it’s a strength of his game for sure.  What scouting reports were you reading?

In addition to this, he hustles like crazy and is very very smart on the ice, so he gets the jump on other players by outworking and outthinking them.

    That’s my take.

I've also read that out of those top-7 forwards, Rossi is the most responsible defensively.

Neutral outcome. Rangers have some very nice pieces.

They really do...and the sad thing is, Buffalo could have everything they have if they were smart.

We could have Chris Drury in our front office, we could have David Quinn as our head coach, we could have a deep prospect pipeline...it's so frustrating.

If there's any team we should be jealous of, it's the New York Rangers.

  8. If it's not one of Lafreniere, Byfield, Stutzle, Rossi, Holtz, Raymond or Perfetti (in that order), I'll be very disappointed.

That is 7 forwards, so we desperately need Drysdale to go in the top-7...if those forwards are all gone, pass on Drysdale and trade the pick.

(I know people love them some Anton Lundell, but I have seen that he's a poor skater and I don't see him as more than a 3rd line center.)

I wouldn’t trade Cozens, full stop.  However, I would not let Cozen’s existence discourage me from adding a 2C quality player.

I would say that a 2nd pair LD would be very helpful.  Someone to replace Scandella.  Then trade one of Risto/Montour for forward help.  Leaves us with........

    Dahlin-Jokiharju

    XLDX-Risto/Montour

    McCabe-Miller

I think that would be a very solid group.

I agree, to me Cozens is untouchable...or at least it would have to be something incredible.

I guess I'm just wondering if Jokiharju can be a top-line defender. Dependent on that 2LD, I guess I could get behind that defense. Some size wouldn't hurt.

I think it would be unwise to move forward under the assumption that Cozens WILL be a good 2C at age 21.

The ES defense was not bad.  It was pretty good.  The PK though was horrible.  I think the total failure of the PK may be coloring your perception of the defense as a whole.

I'm just completely sold on Cozens, he's going to be a stud and I don't see the point in emptying our wallets for a player that won't fit in a year or two.

This team cannot afford to be trading all their draft picks, not to mention it will probably cost Cozens to get a young 2C.

So do we want Monahan for a couple years, or Cozens for a decade?

As for the defense, I just don't see it. The left-side is atrocious after Dahlin, and if we trade Ristolainen and/or Montour, the right-side will look the same as the left.

  12. I want a 2C who can be a 3C in a year when Cozens is ready.

There is zero point in spending all of our available assets to get Sean Monahan, when Dylan Cozens will make him expendable in a year.

Also...why aren't people worrying about the defense? It's bad. It needs to be drastically changed. Everything after Dahlin is garbage.

If you look at the Mitts thread from the summer of 2018, the type of season Casey had as a rookie was no surprise, and really only a mild disappointment.

What has been disappointing was the lack of growth the following off-season.

What is mildly surprising is how many people have chosen to define him by the two.months of hockey he played last fall under a new coach. Sam Reinhart certainly wasn’t defined by his first two months under Phil Housley.

Not saying he’s going to end up like Reinhart, but I am saying there are still many paths his career could take.

It's so refreshing to see someone else understands this.

Mittelstadt had a rather normal rookie season...last year he was under a new coach AND playing with bums as his wingers.

He put up 5 points in 6 games playing with Eichel and Reinhart when he first came out.

GIVE THE KID SOME TALENT AND LET HIM WORK.

I would keep the 8th overall pick. I truly believe an organization can never have enough top young talent.

The sins of GMTM have really hurt. It's time to restock.

The #8 overall this year is actually better then most seasons; the Top 10 of this draft is superb. I would deal Risto to get that 2nd center.

The sins of GMTM? You realize Botterill traded more draft picks away than Murray did, right?

Not once did Botterill make the full 7 selections...and obviously we never had more than 7 selections in any draft Botterill conducted.

Tim Murray > Jason Botterill by a long shot.

One brought us Ryan O'Reilly and Evander Kane...the other brought us Michal Frolik and Wayne Simmonds.
