It's really hard to not spell "coaches" correctly. How do you screw that up?

And are you kidding me?  The guy fell into the perfect team at the perfect time.

No Einstein, it's not hard to spell coaches, sometimes people make mistakes when typing and don't proofread . You, on the other hand, are the one that comes off stupid, dismissing coaching 3 Stanley Cup championships as 'perfect team, perfect time'.

He won as many playoff games in three seasons with the Wild as they did the season before he got there (2).

The Ducks won the same before and after him (they've gotten much worse now but they had three straight playoff seasons after he left).

He did take the Caps to new ground (a decade ago) when they were sputtering but never got over the hump. The team continued at the same pace he had them for several years after he left before breaking through.

Not convinced he's having a major impact anywhere he goes.

Very impressive regular season records, very unimpressive playoff records.

    McLellan, Tippett or Ralph Kruger?

    Dark horse...Hawerchuk?

I think Tippet is going to Seattle, i believe he is working with the owners now. Hawerchuk has a very good reputation as a head coach. Would be an interesting choice.

Interesting that Botterill said the decision to fire Housley was totally his and he contacted Pegula this morning to tell him.

That's not a good look for Pegula IMO; it suggests he wasn't aware he had a coaching problem.

And that jibes with his comments made recently at the NFL meetings in support of Housley.

I don't see it that way. I think the Pegulas have been major disappointments since they took over the Sabres, but it's a stretch to think this suggests he was unaware of a coaching issue with the team.  Of course he would publicly support his coach, anything less would be a huge mistake in judgement.

Quenneville should have gone further with those St. Louis teams than he did.

My definition of success, for a coach, is getting more out of less.

Where does winning 3 cups fall into that definition?  It's really hard to argue that Quenneville isn't one of the most successful coachs in NHL history.  Getting more out of less shouldn't be a gauge, winning is. And who determines what less is? Maybe they were just underestimated, something that happens all the time.

The defense is probably the area of the team where Botterill expected more.

Risto is a 40 point defenseman who is way too mistake-prone in his own zone.  Dahlin looks to be following the same path with defensive zone mistakes.  Scandella is a Botterill acquisition. Further damming is that overall defensive play didn't improve with the acquisition of Montour.

Botterill might feel that a better coach will get better results from this group.

    The fowards just need help.

Goaltending was a awful letdown as well.  Regarding the defense, I was really excited about the hiring of steve smith, I thought he could really help the defense. It just didn't work with this group of players.

I’m glad they didn’t wait.  Half of me thought he might roll him out next year and give him 3 months.

It had to be done, that collapse since december was epic.

    What body language was that?

lack of excitement over scoring. Skinner always reminded me of Laftontaine, who was always celebratory after every goal he scored. Skinner's lack of emotion after scoring last night gave me pause as well. It may be nothing other than frustration, because 40 goals has to be a nice bonus for him.

Sadly, it's hard to evaluate the trade without knowing the full circumstances behind it.

How does it change the perception of the trade if Jbot was told to move him and before the roster bonus was payable?

We traded 4 pieces to Colorado (Grigorenko, Zadorov, Compher and the 31st (then a 2nd rd pick - Jeremy Roy) ) for ROR and McGinn.  Essentially 2 1sts and a 2nd for ROR and a 2nd for McGinn.  We recovered a 3rd rd pick when we traded McGinn after 3/4 of a season.

After 3 seasons of mostly solid play, we traded him for 2 players, Thompson (a former 1st) and a 1st rd pick.  Frankly we gave up more then we got but no tsignificantly since Grigorenko is out of the NHL.  I allocate the Jeremy Roy pick to McGinn.

So the pick we received from Stl plus Guhle for Montour; therefore we traded Grigorenko, Zadorov, Compher, Jeremy Roy and Guhle for 3 years of ROR, 1 year of McGinn, a 3rd rd pick, Sobotka, Berglund's cap space, Thompson and Montour.  Meh!

Seems like much ado about nothing.

While I do think ROR with the proper attitude helps this team compete for a playoff spot, the terrible D and goaltending would have doomed us in the end.  We probably get to 85 points.  Big Woop.  I've said many times, that Jbot needed to step up and support this team following Beglund's departure and didn't, but he probably realized that the D was a group destined to fail.  I think if things went soar as they did, ROR would have sulked again like last season and wouldn't have helped us much in the end.

We'd probably have had threads talking about ROR the sulking jerk vs the threads we did have about stupid and short sighted Jbot was for trading the great ROR.  How quickly people forget ROR's terrible attitude at the close of last season.

Did anyone really notice a 'terrible attitude' on the ice?

Zadorov is part of a playoff team, Compher is becoming a very solid player on a playoff team.  Probably shouldn't dismiss those 2 players.

I believe that O'Reilly wanted out. He only said he wanted to stay in Buffalo after a full off-season of Shawn Michaels "Losing his Smile" talk and the uproar that followed. I truly believe he wanted out. He wanted out of the Avalanche when they drafted a young stud and made him captain. Essentially the same thing happened here. It was clear that Eichel was going to be the Captain and surpass O'Reilly. And hey, maybe I'm 100% wrong. We will likely never know and if we do it'll be in several years, but I think he wanted out.

I'd be willing to be that not one player on our roster wouldn't welcome a trade from Buffalo to a better situation... which is most every other team in the league, save for a couple.

Reports are out that McDavid not happy with direction Edmonton is going in.  They have no GM and like Buffalo he is frustrated with the losing culture.  Everyone on CapFriendly is making their trade proposals of what it would take to get McDavid.  I went a different twist and looked at who on Edmonton might Buffalo be able to get if they have a roster make over.

    My trade idea...

Buffalo sends Reinhart, Ristolainen, Mittelstadt, and Sobotka to Edmonton for Draisaitl, Benning, and Kassian.

Just sneak Sobatka in there like nobody is paying attention?

I like coaches with records of doing "more with less."  Quenneveille doesn't fit that description, and Boudreau does.  So does Vigneault.  And I wouldn't mind a look at a Kirk Muller or someone else who might need a second chance.

He's had some dynamic talent in Washington and Anaheim. Just couldn't win enough in the playoffs. Tremendous regular season record.

If I was a betting man, it was Pegs that hired Housley. He was a glamorous pick. A past Sabres hero - a pick that offered fans nostalgia. It’s just smells too much like a Terry pick.

This has nothing to do with his performance as coach, but does anyone remember when he played here? It's like nobody ever paid attention back then. He was the face of our failures. He was a scorer who couldn't play defense. Right or wrong he and Andreychuk took a lot of them blame for the playoff failures. I don't know how you can call him a 'sabres hero'. Fans couldn't wait to get rid of him. If Pegula did this for any other reason than thinking he was the best choice , it confirms some of the worst fears about his judgement.

I don’t want to blame the goalies because they are as much the victims as the causes. But so much of a hockey team’s psyche rests on its faith in the goalie. They are leaders by default.

We started the season with a raw rookie and a career backup who had combined for just over 150 NHL starts. That was Botterill’s call.

Our chances of a rebound next year starts and finishes in the net; its one of our most underdiscussed issues. Can Botterill risk making the same mistake twice? What will he do? What should he do?

I've been thinking about this a lot. How does he handle the goaltending situation? Can he go with the same 2 goalies? No help on the farm right now. I think he has to make a move.
