    Of course.

Star wingers will be attracted to a chance to play with Eichel, defencemen Dahlin. Star centres see a huge opening on the second line just waiting for them.

Middle six forwards feeling stuck behind established stars will see opportunities to play in the top six in Buffalo. Bottom six players and European and college guys in the middle six

The Sabres have lots of money under the cap and aren’t afraid to spend it,

The Pegulas have a reputation of treating the players well and providing lots of resources and nice amenities.

The industry seems to still see Botterill as a good, smart man

Buffalo is central, with a good travel schedule, and close to home for many NHLers.

Property is cheap, it’s a hockey town and it is considered a good place to raise a family.

There will be plenty to dismiss it as a cold, dead city with a team that has a lengthy record of futility. But anyone who doesn’t have bright lights, warm weather and winning the cup next year as their top three priorities will definitely consider it.

Compare the Sabres to the rest of the league in this area under the Pegulas and they stack up well against the majority. If it wasn’t for the “Because Buffalo” inferiority complex and the on-ice failures of the Ehrhoffs, Moulsons and Okposos, this wouldn’t even be a discussion.

Well, this certainly is a view through 'Buffalo colored glasses'.  An earlier poster mentioned most potential big names don't generally make it to the free agent market. Buffalo right now is a tough sell, it's not a franchise that would be viewed well from an on ice perspective. All warm and fuzzy things aside like living close to home(Toronto is likely also close to home), a lot of players are also from Western Canada as well.  Buffalo needs to be a better option than other offers and that might be pretty hard to accomplish.

Or Tippett as HC with Shane Doan as an assistant.

Doan coaches his son at the rink my kids play at here in AZ- he never wanted to leave Phoenix as a player, I wonder if he would as a coach.  Super great guy, always has time to chat with everyone at the rink.

In the modern NHL almost nobody completely lacks talent. Granted you need some level to compete,  but it is generic like championship talent, playoff talent, or likely not playoff talent.

The point was not enough talent to be a playoff team. Like the Sabres for the last 7 years.

So you're all excited to bring in a solid, retread. Let's be ahead of the curve for once. Keefe has won at every level he's been given a chance at. Make no mistake about it the NHL will come calling soon. And, he will win just like at every other level.

How can you be impressed by a record (Tippett) of 14 yrs as a coach and missed playoffs half the time (including last 5 years in a row)? And, only advanced past first round a couple times, and just once to the third round. I don't want to hear he had no talent either. The great coaches don't have records like this. Solid maybe, but not good enough. I want someone with the potential to win it all.

Raise your standards people and shoot for something bigger.

Just because you don't want to hear the teams had no talent, doesn't mean it wasn't a valid reason for not making the playoffs. It's actually an incredibly valid reason. One of the best reasons.

Obviously small sample size but if it was true that he doesn't do well with young players or like to develop kids, i don't think he would've been on the staff to coach Team North America at the 2016 World Cup which was literally full of only kids, including Jack Eichel.

Are there any coaches out there with a reputation for developing young players?

I'm not saying that he is a bad coach or should not be considered for the Sabres.....just trying to down play the hype that there may not be better options.

As far as Coyotes go....that team was a mess with ownership and the threat of moving the team. Maybe no others wanted the job and they kept him as long as they could.

I live in Phoenix and always found Tippet to be a solid coach. And after the reached the conference finals, it was a mess out here. I think he did as well as anyone could have, but they decided to go full rebuild with new ownership and they gutted the hockey department.  I think we should feel comfortable if he is the choice.

No Thanks on Tippett. Just checked his record as an NHL coach and I'm not impressed. Give me Sheldon Keefe and we're all set for a decade.

He got the Coyotes to a conference final , isn't that impressive?  I find it amazing to see that so many fans will just assume a coach, player... will just duplicate their exact record at their latest job, seemingly totally oblivious to the fact that no 2 situations are remotely comparable. All different players, different management, different competition....

This image from that wivb article isn't that flattering. Mike  Sullivan doing the coaching while Martin stands there with a dumb look on his face & his hands in his pockets: image.thumb.png.e71239cd17d93f993426b1ae93e518c5.png

Even if you don't like the idea of Martin as our head coach, to pick one picture like this to justify your reasoning is just plain ignorant. Maybe the head coach wanted to make a point to the player, is it that hard to imagine?

When did it become so fashionable to use the word "communicator" when discussing hockey coaches?

Is there any team oriented endeavor that doesn't require good "communication?"

I think this word is code these days for "knows how to coddle the prima donna kids who expect to have their ****** sucked.

As compared to the old school approach where the coach told the players the way it was and didn't care about them at all.

We've had 2 guys in here who allegedly know how to be new age coaches and can coddle children players, and it hasn't worked well so far.

    Maybe we need less communication.

Maybe you just don't understand what the word means.

Or maybe you are wrong about the 'old school' approach.

Maybe the recent coaches we had didn't try to coddle the players and we just didn't have the talent or the right coach.

But you're probably right, we need less communication. Brilliant.

If they start him and he's amazing there will be big pressure to put him in Buffalo to start next season. They seem to want to slow play this hand and have UPL be the starter in Rochester next season.

Pressure from whom? They can start him in rochester next season with out issue if they wish. I don't think that's something to worry much about.

What high end players have shunned Buffalo to go to a new team? Tavares was always going to Toronto or staying on the Isle. I can't really think of anyone else.

We'll probably never know, but how often do we hear of negotiations with high end players. I'm not putting Tavares in that category. My guess is agents tell the Sabres not to bother.

I may be wrong, I hope I am. Let's see how we do on this list of UFA's this off season. Let's sign Skinner first.

Alright let me ground you in reality. Players and coaches do like it here. This isn't most desirable destination but it is far from being the armpit of the NHL. Part of that is location. Nothing like living 2 hours from Toronto without paying for it. Not to mention everyone loves hockey here. Not to mention the training and facilities are top of the line since the Pegulas upgraded them. Add to that the recent UFAs we have acquired.

If this was such an armpit why do players keep coming here? Okposo, ERod, Pilut, Nelson, hell even Moulson came back. Pominville talks about how much he loves it here. Coaches will come here too. Why? Because when there is only 31 jobs available, most jobs are attractive. We didn't offer McLellan so he went elsewhere. Babcock leveraged us for Toronto, them's the breaks. That isn't some armpit, because Buffalo, BS. That's just business and the price of doing business in the NHL is sometimes you will lose out on a player or a coach.

Not meaning to disagree with bulk of your post. But Okposo and Moulson are/were here in part because they were offered crazy contracts. Not sure Erod Pilut and Nelson are high end free agents that were in high demand. Players will come here, but I think the stars need to align a bit to get top end players.
