  1. I hope you're right, and I would send them Zemgus and Foligno (and a #2 pick if needed) for Fowler, and I think GMTM would too.

I think Ennis would be Anaheim's least preferred member of the group due to concussion and contract.

Good post.  I kinda think GMTM is going to reel him in and this got me pretty psyched.

I'd rather have Fowler than Shatty.

I would prefer Fowler as well. He is three years younger which fits the Sabres timeline a little better.

  2. Yeah - probably pick #8.  Hopefully a trade too:  fowler for gergs and a third (a second if we must)

That's a really interesting trade. Likely would take the 2nd rounder to complete. If the Ducks are looking to clear some cap space and bring in a top tier free agent, I wonder if they would include a player like Silfverberg in a bigger deal.

  3. Trade for Shattenkirk and Fowler (I would give up #8 for Shattenkirk, he's that good) and sign Soupy.  Problem solved.  Trade Bogo and #8 to EDM for #4 (if you don't trade #8 for shattenkirk), add Tkachuk.  Sign Vesey and Stamkos and a backup goalie and call it a great offseason

The Sabres have backup goalies. What they need is a solid starter. Fleury may not be the best goalie in the NHL, he would be an upgrade on what the Sabres currently have.

If the Sabres could sign Stamkos I think it helps league wide perception as much as it would on ice results. Like Mario Williams signing with the Bills. There would be great benefits down the road beyond adding a premier scorer. It would make signing the next guy a lot easier.

What is the price tag for Campbell?

  4. Trading the #8 pick for extra picks in the second round is A) counter productive B) taking quantity to quality C) Lazy.  The draft is what it is.  The strength after the top #3, is D.  You take what you feel is the best fit long term.  Whether that's Juolevi, Chychrun, Sergachev, Bean, McAvoy. Or you take a forward like Nylander, Keller, Jost, etc.

You are using a singular asset on a player that you have limited information on compared to a drafted prospect who likely has some NHL experience or at least some AHL games  on their resume. Murray has stated he prefers more established prospects. You can then package those eight 2nd and 3rd rounders for more NHL ready talents. There is nothing lazy about asset management.

I do.  Your original suggestion did not mention that the prospect would be NHL-ready, is all.

A top 6 player is what I expect out of a #8 pick.

You're not getting a top six with the #8.

Calgary is amassing a great deal of talent. it would depend on what Murray considers the greater value. Bennett is the ideal choice but unlikely. The Flames do have some quality winger prospects to choose from.

  5. If you're giving the Sabres someone who really is ready for the NHL, ok.

Otherwise, it's just trading the Sabres' opportunity for someone else's garbage.

If you don't have faith in Murray's ability to scout the Flames and acquire a quality prospect, why would you expect him to hit on the #8 pick? I have faith in Murray that any player he would accept in this deal would be a quality NHL ready prospect just as I have faith he we could get a solid prospect at #8. I also love the idea of trading the #8 pick as a part of asset management.

  6. Why would the Sabres agree to that?

4 to 1 asset acquisition.  We're not talking a top five pick or a player likely to jump right into the lineup. The Sabres end up with a NHL ready prospect and 8 picks in rounds 2 & 3 to use in other moves or to draft themselves. The building is far from complete.

  7. I thought the wolverine scene was in line with Stryker fishing Wolverine out of the drink in Day's of Future Past in 1973. Because even though we see Logan talking to Charles at the end about all that he needs to be caught up on, that was set in present day and X-Men Apocalypse takes place in 1983. So Wolverine should be in the lab at Alkali Lake as part of the Weapon X program.

At the end of Futures Past Mystic was Stryker, how did the real Stryker end up with him?

  8. Sabres only have 50 contracts so would have no interest in that whatsoever. They want to get rid of picks (like trade 2 3rds for a late 2nd, a 3rd for Nash, etc....)

Too soon for a move like trading for Nash. I know it's easy for fans to want to jump the gun. The young guys are far from ready. If the Sabres are going to trade for an established NHL player you want to stay around that 24,25 or 26 year old range. The Sabres are still 2-3 years away from being a serious contender. Bringing in a high priced 30 year old veteran at this time is a waste of assets.

    a-la Bennett

The Sabres need a player like Bennett. In a dream big world that would be the ideal trade.

  9. Saw Xmen: Apocalypse, I have to say I left a bit disappointed. Apocalypse is a favorite villain of mine and I thought they missed the mark. They should have gone CGI with the character much like Thanos in the Avengers/Guardians movies or Colossus in Deadpool. Apocalypse is a larger than life character and they made him come across too human.

The Wolverine scenes made no sense to the movie or the time line established in the movies.

  10. Just throwing this out there while watching the Indians and Angels play.

The Calgary Flames trade their three 2nd Round picks and a prospect to the Sabres for the #8 overall pick.

The Flames than trade the #6 pick, #8 picks with Johnny Gaudreau to the Leafs for the #1 overall pick.

It would be an ultra aggressive move by the Flames. They have a lot of talent. Moves like this may prevent them from falling into an Oilers like loop of mediocrity.

Release the Bolton hounds if you will.

  11. Well - what if, on down the line, people start pounding a table about how concussion rates are actually much higher in, say, soccer (than in American football). Should funding be yanked for soccer programs as well? Just a thought on where this is all headed.

Also: NFL Memes was ready with this one.

    Hahahaha - suck it, Tawmmy!

When did Morgan Freeman straighten his hair?

  12. What do you think it will take for the Sabres to win the division next season? Do you think they'll need to sign Stamkos or win the lottery? How far away do you think they currently are? Feel free to discuss your ideal off-season while leaving practicality at the door.

They missed the playoffs this season by 6 games. I think everyone can go back over the season and find those six games where the Sabres left points on the ice. Playoffs in 2016-17, IMO, comes down to two things.

    1) Healthy consistent goal-tending.

    2) The continued  maturity of the young leaders on this team. Ristoleinan, Eichel, Reinhart, O'Reilly and Kane.

This team was a great deal closer than it may have seemed at times. Even without a major acquisition or top three draft pick, this team is going to be on that playoff bubble at the very least.

  13. The third period comebacks, the lack of quit on this roster.

Watching the young guys grow with each game.

As Dudacek said, the return of "Hope."

Top 9 penalty kill. Top 11 power play.

    Solid road performances.

The end of 50 loss and -100 goal differential seasons.

The anticipation of I feel for season two of the Jack & Sam era.

  14. I get the impression the Saviors didn't even know Alexandria existed until Rick and crew killed a bunch of them off with the Hilltop storyline. Don't think Enid is connected to them.

If I had to guess, I think Enid is part of a group that will appear down the road, if she is from the books.

I still think Enid is involved with the Saviors. How did they know when and where to set up roadblocks? Did Enid spike Maggie's pickle juice, and then tell the Saviors? Why was she so concerned that Carl wouldn't come back?

My guess is Negan gets rid of Maggie because she's the weakest and won't be able to provide, or Abraham because he looks the toughest. Abraham was being optimistic in the RV, and that's never good for a character.

I'm hoping they stick with the books and go with Glen.

  15. I get that thought & agree that it's possible there won't be room for him. But unless they get Stamkos, I don't see them having only Gionta as an older leadership F on the team. Moulson won't be moved, but w/ his diminished skills he wouldn't qualify as a "leader."

The kids the Sabres have exhibit a lot of the right qualities & though he's young I could very well see O'Reilly get the C this coming season, so there is young leadership, but IMHO they do need that veteran presence to bolster it.

Having a top 10 PK could be the difference between low 90's & high 90's. I'd like to see a 4th line of Deslauriers - Legwand - Fasching with Stamkos or Drouin the missing piece in the top 6. Legwand as PK specialist; Fasching playing the Moe-ray-all version of LeClair making the 4th line able to score & being the big body down low on the PP (which McGinn was filling); & Deslauriers as the true 4th liner that also has a modest scoring touch.

When injuries occur, bring up Bailey, Baptiste, or Carrier for filling in on top 6 or Schaller or O'Reilly for bottom 6.

I'd like to see Gionta & Legwand both back this season, but at least one gone the following year.

I would like to see Moulson and Legwand moved out and McGinn brought back as well as Troy Brower signed. Add Cam Fowler and we may be talking playoffs next season.

  16. 2-0-1 to finish .500?? Could happen!

    82 points is not .500.  41 - 41 is .500

Glad to see this team hold on and win. That 5-3 penalty kill, giving up only two shots, showed some character. The Rangers had all the momentum and the Sabres did not cave.

The Sabres seemed to have very active sticks in the game. I don't remember them ever deflecting as many passes as they did tonight. Not sure if a stat is kept on that.

Game 79 in a long season with not playoffs ahead of them and this team played hard and they wore their passion on their sleeves tonight. The is no running for the buses or the golf courses for this team. They look like they are ready to play another 30 games.

He is so good on the PK and very well respected in the room, why not bring him back if he's willing?

Hopefully there just won't be room. Not saying this in a bad way against Legwand, just hoping with more young talent coming up and maybe a couple of off-season moves the talent bar will be raised enough where Legwand just wouldn't make the cut.

I think Chad is playing better than a backup. He's the Johnsonator.

I hated the job Johnson did on the first goal Hayes scored. I thought he was slow getting across the crease.

  17. Sabres dropped to 24-48-20 in Pittsburgh with last night's loss. I was hoping the Sabres' crappy luck at the Igloo would improve once they went across the street to the new joint (does it have a nickname? The fracking pad?). No such luck.

What fascinates me is how this sort of phenomenon is carried on over literally decades. Eichel doesn't know the Igloo from the Olympia in Detroit, but now, sure as ######, he can't win in Pittsburgh any more than his ancestors. It's uncanny.

Does Ripper talk it up? Is Ripper a downer? "Man, we could never win in this building. I remember when..." Is it the alumni hangers-on like May and Ray and Marty and Petey who poison the well? Is it doom bug RJ? I want to blame someone! But I kind of doubt anyone would say anything to that effect.

    It's weird.

P.S. If only all the games in Pittsburgh were of the playoff variety. Sabres are 3-1 there in the postseason! And — duck — 1-5 at home. You just can't win. Literally.

The Leafs are now 27-70-6 all-time in games played in Buffalo. Sports are just funny that way sometimes.

  18. You mean this one?

Serious question if the Sabres Draft Pick is in the 9-12 Range and the Sens ask for it in a straight up trade for Hoffman, do you make the trade?

It's hard to ignore back to back 27 goal seasons. At 26 six he is in the age range the Sabres should be looking at. As a RFA he is likely looking for a bigger contract than I would like to see the Sabres pay him.  There were rumblings about some locker issues if I recall. I also seem to hear that the Sens are down on him. We heard the same thing about O'Reilly.  I wouldn't just say No right off the bat. 27 goals a year deserves serious consideration. It would really depend on the off-season trade market. As said above, if that 1st round pick can get a top pair D-man to play with Risto, it might be better served to burn that asset at that time. If I am sitting there at the draft table with no deal for a D-man and the sens make a call, I would have to listen.
