On the flip side (apologies if these are supposed to be 2 polar opposite, extremist threads) the biggest reason for hope is that making the playoffs is something that should just happen, eventually, because it’s literally not a significant accomplishment (as much as it will be and feel that way, for us). It’s not hard to do. The Sabres a mathematical outlier isn’t just something we say: frustration stems from flipping a coin heads 14 times in a row presumably by doing nothing we’d make it in reasonably short order - we have to be actively be handcuffing the proceedings to fail this much no, Adams surely didn’t “do enough” by the prism of a team that’s missed 14 straight and should be treating the season like a can’t miss rather than a “maybe make”, but frankly we could easily make the playoffs standing pat just because, again, it’s not difficult Does it prove Adams’ plan correct if he scratches a playoff berth for the first time in 6 seasons? Of course not - we know he’s a poor GM and his plan was bad. There’s nothing that can be proven and luckily for us it doesn’t need to be: we can simply get in because mediocre teams get in all the time

I don’t know that the trade makes the team better but it definitely will make the D unit better unless he’s some sort of outright net negative like Cozens, or Hellebuyck - who was “bad on breakaways, which we give up a lot of” and who wouldn’t have helped this team at all

They aren’t all merited, but they are all imminently understandable That’s the rub. We had SUCH an opportunity to weaponize our cap space. We effed up - that opportunity is long gone. We didn’t build when it was easier, now Adams will have to do so under a much higher degree difficulty still playing for the same prize, here, but Adams has added 2 extra twirls to his high dive

Right - it’s not that the signing will be bad - we need to and will sign him and I will call it the right deal - it’s just the egregious waste of the asset until now. The compare/contrast looks quite ugly it’s difficult to imagine them maximizing a lesser deal when they couldn’t take advantage of one that was much more advantageous

I guess for me it doesn’t look like close to enough for a team verging on 15 years missed. I look at it from the perspective of when the season ended, and it’s 3 fringe moves and downgrading the top 6 if someone had said before last season started, that we’d finish with 79 points, miss for Adams’ 5th straight year, and these would be the only changes, including management and coaching, before puck drop next season, I think it would be near 100% “not enough” for a response - we all agreed it would be a blood bath we were all talking about the need for impact additions. We might have made 1 at the cost of losing 1. (Peterka/Kesselring) the perspective really does change and ease up as the months go by. If we put our minds back in the place of the unacceptable disappointment we felt, this looks weak ymmv - - - if we somehow *do* strike gold with Norris, it may change the calculation for me somewhat. But there’s no reason to think the move looks particularly good, from the perspective of now - there’s been no benefit of the doubt earned
