Unless Adams starts being a GM, right now, this season is lost. Adding Kane and doing nothing else wouldn't count either.

Agreed, unless UPL (who has actually been not all that shabby (breakaway record aside) or Comrie truly start to shine, KA should seek out a goalie. Let Levi go to Rochester and play regularly. The kid has a long career in front of him, treat him right.

I’m trying to be fair and realistic but tonight did it for me, I don’t think they have what it takes to make the jump yet. Still at least a year away. I hope I am wrong. I can’t see this team suddenly becoming consistent enough to leap ahead of the teams they are in contention with for a wc spot.

I think you're right. The only way the Sabres make it is with a couple of changes. They can't afford to flounder with Tage out and perhaps mediocre goaltending. Not much out there in the way of decent available goalies as Edmonton is seriously on the hunt as well. Halak intrigues me as he is capable of going on a run but that is past history. He requested out of Carolina so if he's reasonably priced? Patrick Kane intrigues me as his hip is all healed and perhaps he can pick up from Tage in the interim and if he's motivated to be home, who knows? He won't come cheaply but the Sabres need to get scoring again and who else is available that can help in that department?

and get Levi to Rochester. Kid needs to play on a more consistant basis. He's so young, no need to saddle him with this kind of pressure just yet.

The average over the past 8 full seasons is 3.75, which is 23%.  Those still seem like long odds, but keep in mind that every year there are a number of teams that are pretty much considered locks to make the playoffs before the season starts.  The Sabres, if they are going to be in the race, are going to be in competition with Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, NYI, Ottawa and Detroit for a WC spot.  Regardless, we will need to get on a run at some point.

They may have to make a few changes to get there. Not sure who they could get as a goaltender as apparently Edmonton is looking as well. Also how long will Tage be out and how long will it take for both he and Quinn to get back into game playing shape when they return. I have to say, I'm intrigued at the thought of Patrick Kane and perhaps Jaro Halak in goal so Devon can play loads in Rochester. Just a thought.

There were 3 teams that did it last year:  Florida, Minnesota and Edmonton.

I have not looked it up beyond last year, but just saw a post elsewhere that there have been 30 teams that did it in the last 8 full NHL seasons.

Apparently it's an "average". I just Googled it again and they give stats and at the very end they state "On average, roughly 3 teams that are outside the playoff picture by US Thanksgiving ed up qualifying". My mistake, not only "3 teams", but on average, only 3 teams per season.

8 wins, 11 losses for a team that wasn’t even just interested in the playoffs this year, but the Cup. The “in the playoffs by thanksgiving” thing illustrates the difficulties and unlikelihood of turning it around in season, but in the end it’s an arbitrary cut off point - there’s plenty of mathematical opportunity and runway to get it done.

they’ll need to pick up that 8 wins in 19 tries pace very soon to do it, though, regardless of the points the league doles out for 2 of those losses.

While arbitrary, again, only 3 teams have ever defied those odds. As this team has gone thus far, no way they will be the 4th team.

  6. Hate to bring this up again guys but tomorrow is US Thanksgiving and the Sabres aren't in a playoff spot. According to the majestic Sportscentre odds, it generally means they won't make it to the dance this season. I know some on here don't believe in that stat, but only 3 teams (I believe it is only 3) have defied those odds. I believe this years Sabres will not buck that trend.

Just the mere suggestion of changes to the roster or coaching staff will draw the ire of many on this site!  Something needs to change.  Start at the top.  This team needs a gritty coach that will hopefully rub off on this mentally and physically soft team.    Too many players on this team display DG’s personality

I can attest to that! I got roasted for being on the fire Granato train. As well as the "no playoff spot by US Thanksgiving means no playoffs for this season" train. I stick to both statements however!

I am not "blinded", thanks for your passive-aggressive "you are blinded and that's OK", and "fans like you". More nonsense. You don't have a clue what you're talking about Mr. Chicken Little.

See you at US Thanksgiving! Hope they're in a playoff spot. I watch a lot of sports and if you claim to also, you are blinded by dismissing that stat. Enjoy!

I don't give a crap about that "stat".

Quinn will likely give them a significant boost on the back half of the year once he comes back.

Will probably take him a month or so to get back into the swing of things once he starts playing.

    Blah, blah, blah...

You don't actually watch games. At least not with any knowledge of what you are watching.

Again, feel absolutely free to call me out when they "make the playoffs this year"! LOL! You are blinded and that's OK, they need fans like you, give them all your hard earned cash. maybe ine day, they'll reward you- maybe even this season!

This thread is ridiculous. Nobody is getting fired, and we will make the playoffs. I'm really surprised by how many chicken littles there are on this site.

I agree with you there. No one is getting fired but I am going with the SportsCentre stats on making the playoffs. The odds are just too high to go against that trend. This team needs to find some consistency. Let's see how they look against Boston, including Devon Levi.

How do you know? Binnington was a rookie that year. Levi is fully capable of becoming that as he gains experience.

It's amazing how people act like young players just automatically reach their peak in their first game and if they don't there is no chance they improve during a season.

    Do you even watch sports?

Prove me wrong. Watch it, and this club all the time. My question to you? You do know about the SportsCentre stat about being in a playoff spot by US Thanksgiving? What actually makes you believe that this club will be the one to be like St. Louis besides being a blinded fan? The team I'm watching makes the same mistakes, plays piss poor defence, shows up every other night to play. My bet is, no playoffs again this season. Feel absolutely free to call me out if they do. Not with this current coaching staff.

You mean like how Saint Louis was worn out when they were the worst team in hockey in January and won the Stanley Cup that year?

St. Louis (plus 2 other teams I believe) are the anomaly. Especially St. Louis who went on to a Cup instead of just making the playoffs when they weren't in that position by US Thanksgiving. That being said. This Sabres club is no where near that one and unless one of the goaltenders turns into Jordan Binnington 2.0, not happening with this club.

Granato doesn’t need to be fired but I would be looking at the assistant coaches. Whoever is running the PP needs to be removed. It’s an absolute mess.

Like others have mentioned I was very disappointed that they couldn’t find a spot for Peca on the staff.

I'm good with Granato's firing. Gallant awaits (that is if he wants the job, he is getting paid still)

Also … (not talking about St. Louis) For some, yelling, screaming, calling out their own players in public, and throwing things = good coach.

All I'm saying is Mr. Nice Guy (DG) emotionless on the bench, isn't working out. I'm good with another change. Too much talent in that dressing room to see the same garbage show from last night repeatedly surfacing. Ralph, Phil, Dan and so far Donnie Meatballs haven't amounted to much with all the high draft picks the Sabres have had. I'm going with the Sportscentre stat that if the Sabres aren't in a playoff position by US Thanksgiving, they won't be at the end of this season. I'll take Gerard Gallant any day of the week over Donnie G.

LOL “brings it to the coaching”

St. Louis is a coaching experiment being that he’s a first timer walking in with no coaching experience. I am not envious of their bench.

Also, no one who could speak French and was qualified wanted the job.
I am not saying it can’t work out, but plucking a fiery former player is not a good coach hiring strategy.

How's the Sabres coaching hiring strategy going since Bylsma? LOL like it's anything better!
