Pro sports might be a bubble? Think about how out of reach attendance is at an average hockey game for a family of 4. How onerous PSL’s are. At some point, the economics could fail.

My guess is we will continue to see venue size shrink, suite and premier seats increase, sportsbooks taking root in stadiums and arenas, sales and relocations involving private equity money outpacing any realistic forecast of worth, and more and more fans telling you how it’s better to just watch at home in front of their 70” screens.

If they're forced to come up with 2-3 billion dollars on inheriting the team to pay the estate tax?

My rough math for worst case scenarios based on purchase price and estimated current value is a tax bill of $920M on a profit of $2.3B. Selling 25% at the same prices nets a tax bill of $550M.

The below article details our tax implications for owning sports franchises. I think it’s safe to say nobody needs to feel any sympathy for the Pegula’s tax bills.

Notice how I am not at all in the Sabres Sales mongering rumor thread, that's because I think the topic isn't worth discussing. You should follow my lead and stay out of threads you don't care about.

I don’t know if you meant this to be funny but I laughed

The coach mentioned with no previous experience is Jon Cooper - currently the longest tenured coach in the nhl.  Averages 50 wins a season.  Three final appereances and two victories.

That’s great for Jon Cooper, I love his story. Terry already spent multiple hires trying to look like a genius and hire the next big thing. It didn’t work with Housley. It didn’t work with Krueger. It didn’t work with Granato.

Everyone wants the next big thing. We don’t have the luxury of that want anymore.

Can we please put to bed the idea Okposo was some great leader? He has barely seen the playoffs in his career. He was a mediocre player his entire run in buffalo. You never heard anything about him taking players aside and letting them know play was unacceptable.

Good post all around, but this especially. Those interviews made it plenty clear he brought little to nothing to the table.

The team also spent a lot of money on youth hockey.  They provided free  equipment for mites just starting out. Youth hockey is pretty big here,  hate to see it suffer. My kids played 7 years,  it was a great program.

I believe I saw this will all continue under the roadrunners branding

No… Overpayment is $49M for 7 years to Cozens… or $58M for 7 years to Powers… both Come Bets… I’m willing to pay for Krebs’ shift-in shift-out High Compete and Enthusiasm … attributes in short supply on the roster… It can be infectious in team-building… Giving Krebs a couple years at $2.5-3.0 per to prove his worth is my Come Bet… Hope he gets a chance to prove me right or wrong.

Prove it deals are cheap, not an extra $1m+ per season.

I have no idea who this guy is or who his multiple sources are. You would think there would be way more smoke around this if it were potentially happening though.

I don’t believe the rumor whatsoever but I would 100% roll the dice over a relocation that is almost certainly never going to happen to get a new owner.

Has anyone seen this? Is there been any pushback on it? I know they are getting out of running the Blue Cross Arena.  There was a rumor a month a go that Terry was considering selling the Sabres to the Wegman’s family. Weird times.

    Do it, Terry. No balls.

I’m so glad I never caught wind of the Better Says schtick.  I guess because I didn’t really attend games at that point in my life?  Mad cringy.

I remember it being much more divisive than the board let’s it on to be. It replaced buffalos charging through the city and Sabres Dance. Like others said, it’s also depressing as *****.

So, we heard him telling the real story. I want to hear what the “official” story was was going to be that they came up with.

Sure, and the Stanley cup is just a hunk of metal.

Shut it, Manfred. You’ve already taken a hammer to baseball, leave hockey alone!

I challenge anyone to watch the locker room clear out videos/interviews and tell me Tuch shouldn't be the captain. Compare him to Dahlin and decide for yourself.

As for Greenway, somebody test that dude for THC content or something. Talk about over mellow detachment. Wow.

Also noteworthy are Tuch's comments on Ruff and Gallant.

I didn’t like Dahlin’s interview whatsoever. I wanted to hire Gallant after Vegas canned him. Tuch reinforced that for me.

I mean this with the utmost sincerity—what noteworthy humanitarian contributions has he made to the community? I’m not on the twitter so I don’t see the Sabres marketing about this and I don’t remember seeing other posts.

Im not doubting any of his contributions, I’d simply like to learn more of them.

I don’t even know where to begin. He took rosters that should have been nowhere near contenders and went to ECFs and a Stanley Cup Final.

He could adapt to the roster he had. He was a tremendous coach.

I don’t think he is the answer now

What? He had Dominik Hasek. Ted Nolan had success with Hasek, is he a good coach?

What group of players do you think he got more out of than another coach could have? Was his Hasek teams markedly better than Nolan’s?

How can you say he's not a good coach when the owner wouldn't give him any help financially.

I would like to see how many other coaches would have the success he had with extreme budgets

I didn’t say he wasn’t a good coach, I said at no point was he considered a top 5 coach in the league. Maybe I’m mistaken, but I don’t really think that’s a debate. Give me the belle of the ball.

Your main point cuts both ways. Lindy was able to stick around as long as he did because of the penny pinching. His win number is inflated because of that and then people point to his win total and say SEE! I also don’t remember him being in any particular demand after he was fired. His perception in Buffalo is outsized compared to the rest of the hockey world.

The last point, I don’t really see it being applicable. Lindy didn’t do anything special on a shoestring budget. Hasek is Hasek. He had success with Drury and Briere. So you have ‘98 loss to the Caps, ‘99 loss to the Stars, ‘06 loss to the Canes, and ‘07 loss to the Sens. There’s our successful (HA) seasons since 1998. Many coaches could have gotten those same results.

Lindy would get more out the team than DG did. There are coaches available who can get more from this team than Lindy. Give me them.

  15. I really don’t think Lindy was ever a great coach. I understand he won a Jack Adams, but at no point in time, in my memory at least, was he considered a top-5 coach in any respect. I also don’t think he ever elevated a roster. He’s arguably coming in to equalish talent to his last playoff team here. I don’t think he was good enough in those years, and I don’t think he will be now.

I get it. We all love Lindy. But can we not admit that his win total comes from the fact he coached an organization that was under incredible turmoil and then a penny pincher. He was here because nobody wanted more. It’s long been a problem with the organization.

I know I’ll take a lot of heat for this but this board incredible overrates Ruff.
