The grinders love him. There's no evidence the high skill players that actually win games love him.

Lafontaine scored 40 with him, and hired him as coach.  I’d say that is pretty good evidence, unless you consider him to be a grinder.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the other side of the argument, but it just ignores taking into account favorable things due to bias against that brand of hockey.

I personally think letting him go after the tank year was a mistake.  I’m pretty sure I am one of only a couple of people who feel this way, and also believe that if given some talent, he’ll get us into the playoffs.  I’m not seriously suggesting we hire Nolan back as I jokingly did in another thread, but as dark mentioned, too much Nolan hate in here.

Very impressive regular season records, very unimpressive playoff records.

I think Tippet is going to Seattle, i believe he is working with the owners now. Hawerchuk has a very good reputation as a head coach. Would be an interesting choice.

Trade Housley for Hawerchuk again....that has a certain symmetry.

As I have no hope left for this team in my lifetime, they may as well bring the circus to town.  I just don't care anymore. They are suffocating my will to be a fan.

If you made it this far, you can go a little further.  Keep the faith brother.  "the best is yet to come"

Ted Nolan praised. Pat Lafontaine praised. Dan Bylsma panned. Tim Murray panned.

I'd really like to hear from Pat Lafontaine about all of this someday. Little tidbits here and there seem to paint him as the only guy who actually had his head on straight, contrary to the narrative at the time that he was the problem...

Maybe its time to bring back Nolan for the hat trick (awaits ridicule from other board members).

Geez, I would have loved to have been a fly on that wall.  I'm very curious as to what was discussed.  For a division rival, I wouldn't have accepted anything less than Miller, Cernak, and Cirelli, especially since they were the ones initiating contact.

Do the math. They certainly can... and we could've re-signed Skinner to  9 per, and given Reinhart 6 per long term... and it still would've been fine cap wise.

Perhaps in a perfect world, but I find that questionable with the acquisition of Sheary and Hunwick whom you most likely neglected to account for, whom were acquired prior to Skinner.  You can say we shouldn't have acquired them, but that's just not how it shook out in real time.

With all do respect, many of your scenarios are great in hindsight, but Botterill doesn't have that luxury.  With the exception of the O'Reilly deal, the majority of his moves were lauded at the time.  Overall I think the team is heading in the right direction, and I like what he is trying to build.  Sure, things can be improved on, but lets see what he does at the deadline.

The future does look bright (thanks to Dahlin), but Botts pushed that bright future further down the timeline when he didn't have to (ROR). The hole he created could take years and/or painful amount of assets to repair.

This was the beginning of a contender level core:

    Skinner-Eichel-XXXX

    XXXX-ROR-Reinhart

    XXXX-Mitts-XXXX

    XXXX-Larsson-Girgs

    Dahlin-XXXX

    Pilut-Risto

    XXXX-XXXX

    Ullmark/Hutton

The center spine we had was foundational... he removed a pillar... and for practically nothing in return.

We had a Bergeron / Toews level center (on the ice) to play behind Eichel...  and now we have a huge hole and some moderate futures instead.

I didn't do the math, but I don't think the bolded could be on the same team.  In other words, if ROR was kept, it is very likely that Skinner would not have been acquired due to cap reasons.

  8. The only thing that concerns me about this is that there was so much made about how quickly he processes the game at the draft.  Like you and others, I'm willing to excuse an 18 year old defenseman and give him a few years to iron things out, but I'd be lying if I said the thought "maybe this guy was a little overhyped" wasn't starting to creep in.

He's going to make mistakes, he's only 18. Kid has 20 points in 41 games, I can take some mental errors as he continues to learn the speed of the game.

Victor Hedman had 20 points in 74 games as a 19 year old rookie, just throwing that out for reference.

You are totally right of course.  But I don’t think it is wrong to analyze his weaknesses.

    That was fun.

I need to say it, the refs did not have a good game, they really just missed big plays and it bit buffalo on the 1st one.

Yandle needs a shot, bad, I can't believe it didn't happen, but we won, so in the end I guess that's what matters.

Tage looked great and Okposo had some bull moves and some beast mode out there tonight.

Middlesuck probably needs to sit for a game, his confidence is shot.

Dahlin is soft-ish, but he's like 9 years old, he skated tonight like he was in the beginning of the year, I enjoyed his little moves to get us outta trouble.

We slayed a panther, now let's harpoon a Bruin

I wouldn’t say Dahlin is really soft, but lacks urgency in his game.  I think where some folks see calmness, I see someone who is having issues with the speed of the game.  I might be articulating it wrong, but always he seems to wait too long with the puck, and gets stripped a lot.

  11. I was reading the comments to the Finland/Canada game on hfboards.  The majority of the posting Canadian fans were pretty pathetic.  I couldn't believe the vitriol directed at Comtois.  They are just kids trying their best for their country.

By the end of the season they'll be what their record says they are, but they're definitely still in a spot where the overall record can be deceiving because the streak happened. The 10 wins still count, of course, but it's more influential on their "pace" at 40 games than after 82 have been played. They're a pretty average team that had a run of luck leading to wins, which is great, as it put us in the playoff conversation. But this is pretty much the same team as it was during the streak, just the luck flipping the other way and the goaltending not bailing out the mistakes as frequently.

Yep....folks got way too ahead of themselves during the streak as their play just wasn’t that great.  It was good to enjoy of course, but to compare the team to 05-06, was bound to yield disappointment.

So we are all going to forget his terrible clearing attempt on the PK that ended up in the back of the net for the tying goal a few seconds later?

Nope, I remember that.  But give the guy some credit here...he played a decent game overall.  He’s been one of our better penalty killers all year too.  There were a boatload of players I would criticize more than sobotka.  Outside of bogosian, our defense was  a total mess.  Risto seemed like he just woke up from a nap, and dahlin was a spectator all night.

Very concerned about mittelstadt and dahlin lately.  Both slumping big time.

I'm psyched by how little I care about this tourney.  Don't get me wrong, I'll catch a couple of USA & Canada games & try to catch the Finns & Czechs as well to see the Sabres kids.  But, unlike the past 4 years, this is not appointment TV; & that is strictly due to the Sabres themselves being both relevant AND entertaining.

Should the Sabres have the potential to get a high lottery pick next year courtesy of the Blues pick, might be more eager to watch again when the tourney gets hosted by Pekar's current squad.

It appears from early reading on the 2020 draft, having multiple picks in that draft may be more desirable than this year.  Elite top end picks, with depth.

The Sabres only consistently sold out their barn in the '70's and this last run post-lockout.  They didn't even sellout consistently in the Lafontaine years nor in the Hasek years.  (Weeknight October games & Whalers games sparsely attended; March games nearly always sold out.  Lather, rinse, repeat.)

Other than for a handful of regular season games and deep playoff run games they'd never sell them all & it would be counter productive to have that many seats available.

    Concur.

    As an aside.....

One thing they should consider to enhance atmosphere is to vertically stack the seats ala the Aud.  It appears architects who design the new buildings like pushing things back.  This probably results in better sight lines, but you are further away from the action.  It has been often repeated that the old buildings are missed so much because the fans were right on top of everything.  It would make sense to make this a priority, along with attempting to amplify the noise in some way via the design.

That is not possible.  Plain old Leaf fans can't even take over their arena.

    What in the hell?

This I agree with.  It's a challenge to the home team fans to up their game.  Soccer stadiums always have designated areas for visiting fans.  It is one of the most awesome things in European football and I think that MLS is trying to do the same thing.

I concur.  If Leaf fans could just tone down their abrasiveness a tad in a visiting building, it would be a much more enjoyable for everyone.  Cheer for your team, but don't be a super jerk to everyone in the building.  I found going to a game in Toronto is fairly laid back because Leaf fans don't feel the need to be total douches all the time, and you can have a fairly good natured, educated conversation with them.  Ditto Montreal.

I went to the game in the 1999 ECF where Peca leveled Domi as Peca exited the penalty box.

That was the best game experience I've ever had, anywhere.

That includes The Comeback and Game 6 of the 2006 ECF.

Part of why the 1999 game was so good was because the arena had a good amount of TML fans there, or, in the case of the 4 dudes next to us, hockey fans from central/western Canada who were there to cheer for a team from Canada to advance.

    The atmosphere was absolutely electric.

I was at the same game, but the ratio, if I recall correctly, was heavily in favor of Buffalo (the Leaf fans were more subdued that game too because most Sabre fans were frothing at the mouth from Stanley Cup fever....they didn't dare be their obnoxious selves).  Not even close to a regular season invasion at least.  I think that offers an important roadmap if we ever see the Leafs in the playoffs going forward in that it won't be 50/50, but more 75/25.

I don't think I'm in the group you are referring to or respected for that matter but I have often been incredulous as to how the cap keeps going up. I just don't see a lot of growth for the league. So are they just milking the hardcore fan base for extra cake? I don't get it. It's a niche league that this country barely supports.

I hate to say it but the NHL needs to take a page from the NBA. I'm not very fond of the league but my God can they promote their product. Stars are actually allowed to showcase their skills frequently, every game. Hockey, the NHLs best are noticeable a dozen times a season.

The dinosaurs in charge need to preserve some Neanderthal type culture when injured players are blamed for their own injuries. Let's not showcase the players speed and skill, let's suppress it with muddied rules that don't favor offensive production at all. They'd rather have no call interference 40 times a game that completely ruins the sport.

NBA is a bunch of pop culture schlock.  I’m not saying you are wrong, but anytime things get over marketed to the masses, the product turns into a shiny turd in my humble opinion.
