I was reading Ranger fans talking about Eichel and to a man, they don't want him. They call him an expensive, injury-prone crybaby. It occurs to me after all this, maybe nobody wants Eichel?

They just want to fleece Buffalo.  They want him badly, but think if they personally downplay him, that will somehow effect what the Rangers give up.

One thing stuck out to me watching tonight.

The forecheck, notably Asplund and R2, puts alot more pressure on the D because of their speed, positioning and stick work.

Totally agree.  They have really impressed me with their tenacity.  We have been missing this for far too long.

The facts keep piling up, but RK, aka Rasputin, is the worst coach in Sabres history.  He nearly destroyed the franchise.

Today’s article about Dahlin is another illustration of how poor a coach he is. https://buffalonews.com/sports/sabres/confident-again-sabres-rasmus-dahlin-thriving-under-interim-coach-don-granato/article_a192bbde-97b1-11eb-ad7d-af46be9fa625.html

The ball and chain he placed on Dahlin and our other mobile D is in excusable.  Just look at the new Dahlin possession numbers in the article and it will make you puke when you realize that this could have been Dahlin all season had Rasputin had a clue.

The offense in general from 1.19 EV goals to over 2.5 in the last six.  This improvement without Eichel.

Ron Ralston was nominated as a rival, but he went 15-11-5 after replacing Lindy while the tank began in earnest.  RK was given a mediocre team which the GM added talent to and he destroyed the team.  The offense output of nearly every forward and every offensive D was destroyed under RK’s system.

Maybe I’m just venting but RK is now my most despised person in Sabres history.

Although nobody will confuse Dahlin's current defensive acumen with Mike Ramsey, his play is night and day different under Granato.  I've had my doubts that coaching could be that much of a difference, but I'm slowly awakening to the fact that it does matter quite a bit.

The fact that the Sabres are not only winning, but looking halfway competent without Eichel, Cozens, McCabe, and Hall is pretty impressive, and some credit must go to Granato.  As others have said, having Ullmark back is probably a bigger reason, but still need to give some props to Granato.

Quick... and down and dirty. The production value of these won't be spectacular. I'll mostly record them off old audio cassettes (some of which are over 40 years old!) on my phone, then play the audio on my computer while I video a still pic (the shakiness will be a creative choice). Then upload to YT.

I posted the first videopic in a recent thread — Rick's call of a weird Andreychuk goal where he was sitting on the bench when his center ice shot finally made its way over the goal line. I'll repeat it here before posting my next offering.

These will be on the more random and obscure side and will take us back mainly to the Jeanneret of the 80s and early 90s. There will be some great moments as well; maybe you've forgotten the calls or never heard them. I'll throw in the occasional Ted Darling, because it feels like his voice is being lost to time. Jim Lorentz, even, who was forced into play by play for a few games.

    Good work!

The play can be broken into 3 parts.

Part 1: Hall screws up and sends a pass to the point basically through a defender.

Part 2: Dahlin thinks he can win the puck and doesn't aka he screws up.

Part 3: Dahlin is engaged with the puck carrier all the way down the ice, is smart enough to stop in front where the trailer is waiting that Taylor Hall didn't pick up because he also went after the puck carrier that Dahlin was engaged with. Considering Hall could see the ice and Dahlin couldn't, Hall ***** up again.

He plays the body in Part 2, and we are not even talking about this play.  Even if he gets the puck cleanly there, the puck is leaving the zone based on momentum alone.

Not sure what the heck Hall is doing on the back check.  This is also abysmal.

Hall shouldn't have forced the puck to Dahlin with Reinhart wide open down low.

That said, I'm OK with the turnover... it happens, good stick by Goodreau.

What I'm not OK with is Dahlin's initial move at Goodreau.    His stick AND body angle toward the puck.     That's a play you see in squirts and peewee, which any decent coach will correct at a young age.     He should have had stick on puck, BODY ON BODY.

For me this all goes back to bad practice habits.    You can tell by the way they play that they aren't physical enough in practice and it shows up in this sequence.

I totally agree.  He's not physically engaged, and tends to glue his eyes to the puck, all while not being able to react quick enough.  This appears to be disturbingly pervasive throughout the lineup though.  One would expect that given Dahlin's skillset, he could break out of this funk.  The fact that he seems to be falling further and further into the abyss is quite vexing.

    Point of fact:

Before the Pegulas took over, the Buffalo Sabres missed the playoffs 11 times (1970-1, 1971-2, 1973-4, 1985-6, 1986-7, 1995-6, 2001-2, 2002-3, 2003-4, 2007-8, and 2008-9).  Three of those were as an expansion team back when they were designed to have talent like the Sabres do now, one was an ownership transition with the Knoxes, and three others were due to the Rigas's problems.

    This sucks.

So to put it another way, we've made the playoffs four times since Hasek left.  Yikes!

Chad DeDomincis posted these rumors at His Website xBuffalo

    Rumors and Team Rumblings

    1. The Sabres were out there looking for options on the blue line when Jake McCabe and Will Borgen were injured. They made a call to a former division rival in the Montreal Canadiens. Brett Kulak and Victor Mete were two players they expressed interest in. Both have been in and out of the lineup.

Mete requested a trade from the Canadiens about a month ago, but Marc Bergevin has stated he’s not interested in moving the young defender at this point. He’s a restricted free agent in the summer.

Kulak is an underrated player that is an “analytics darling.” The 27-year-old would be a player that could be around next season as well. He has one more year on his contract after this season with a $1.85 million cap hit.

    2. Jon Merrill is another player they inquired about. He’s currently playing with the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year deal.

    3. The last defenseman that I’m aware of that they inquired about was Alex Goligoski of the Arizona Coyotes. The catch here is that he carries a modified no-trade clause where he submits an eight-team no-trade list. The cap hit ($5.75 million) is also an issue here for the Sabres. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

    4. Interesting tidbit that I dropped on the podcast is that the Sabres have an interest in John Gibson. They acquired about his availability in the offseason and then again about a month into the season. Both times they were told by the Ducks that they have no interest in moving him at this time.

If he was to be made available in the offseason, they’ll likely try to be involved in the sweepstakes.

    5. Sticking with goaltenders I’d keep an eye on Antti Raanta in the offseason as a free agent option. He’s a player that they like. I don’t think it’s likely they’d make a move for him to give up assets during the season with the quarantine situation and place in the standings.

    6. Sam Bennett is a player the Sabres called about, but it was more of a kicking tires call.

    7. The Sabres and Taylor Hall’s representatives were scheduled to meet this week to begin very early discussions on a contract extension. We’ll see where it goes as the season goes along, but I’d put it at a 60/40 chance he remains with the club.

Believe it or not, he has enjoyed his time in Buffalo. It’s also likely any extension would come in below the $8 million he’s making this season on a short to mid-term deal (3-4 years).

    8. This last one is directly related to the Sabres front office. Jason Nightingale and Kevyn Adams had an interest in expanding the analytics department. In fact, they had a list of candidates they were interested in back in the summer. However, their plans to expand the department this season were shut down.

The financial situation with the team due to the pandemic played a factor here. Hopefully, they’ll come back to it down the road.

Again, these are just some rumors that were passed along to me over the last month or so. Nothing is close or even progressed past initial interest that I’m aware of at least. I hope this helped take your mind off the bad hockey team for a little bit.

I could get behind a trade for Gibson.  His stats aren’t great the past two years, but every time I see him, he’s stellar.  Anaheim is a much better trade partner for us, if we are looking to deal Eichel.  Zegras and Comtois are enticing.
