Lol yes, losing Will "14 NHL Games" Borgen is really throwing that mantra out the window.

I get it, it is fashionable to bitch about everything the Sabres do but good lord. We lost our 6th defender... who cares. These team just finished last again in the rankings, you all really think Will Borgen leaving in an expansion draft is going to sick us? Give me a break.

I can only speak for myself, but my disappointment in Borgen getting selected was stemming more from the fact that he was being developed slowly (or properly, depending on your perspective), and I was curious how he would grow/mature into our d-corps.  He's by no means a savior and losing him is not the end of the world, but our franchise must start developing and inserting these guys into our lineup to start improving over the long haul.

    Wrapping up this series...

    Will they be interested?

One would have to think so, considering this is the team that apparently planted the idea of trading the captain into Kevyn Adams' head. Of course that was a management team that was abruptly fired by a wild card owner. Since then we've had a brief hint that James Dolan had ordered his management team to go out and get Eichel, one credible report that new GM Chris Drury had kicked some tires, and a notable lack of Rangers hype from the Insiders crowd.

    Do they have the pieces?

From this distance, the Rangers seem better positioned to make an Eichel deal than any team other than perhaps L.A. They have $22 million in cap space with only two significant contracts this summer and they have one of the deepest lists of prospects and young NHL players in the league. And, unlike L.A., their window is opening now. Despite their kids, their current core — Trouba, Panarin, Zibanejad, Strome and Krieder — is all in their prime, and looking at its back half.

    Would this work?

Lafreniere, Chytil, Georgiev and Trouba for Eichel and Ristolainen (50% retained)

One of the most frustrating things about internet Ranger fans is their absolute insistence they can get Eichel without anyone at all that they value. The fact is the Rangers — with Buchnevich, Kakko and Kravtsov already backing up Panarin and Kreider on the depth chart, and Strome likely moving to wing with Eichel arriving — are in a position where they can absorb the loss of Lafreniere if it means adding Eichel.

And in my view, putting Lafreniere on the table pretty much guarantees the Rangers will get Eichel, no matter what other pieces are included. In this case Chytil and Georgiev fill needs and Chytil has some middle-six centre upside.

A retained Risto for Trouba is essentially two similar players, giving the Rangers a massive cap dump to accommodate Eichel now and moving forward. It could be accommodated in different ways, Strome or Buchnevich perhaps, or some retention on Eichel.

Is there a deal to be made with the Rangers?

Ranger fans are master gaslighters.  They will have you believe the Rangers are doing the Sabres a favor for taking Eichel.

Personally, I’m just not super high on the majority of their guys.  Kakko is a big “meh”, and I can see him having a mostly mediocre career if not brought along with the right line mates.  Lafreniere is really the only guy that moves the needle for me (outside Fox, Panarin).

Dahlin has that Eichel speed where he looks slow but isn't. His short area explosiveness though needs work.

The most disconcerting part of Dahlin's game is his inability to react quickly to a play from a decision making perspective.  This, coupled with the short area explosiveness really puts Dahlin in a hole on many plays.  Perhaps if he can "just play the game", this will improve.  However, I'm concerned fans and scouts alike mischaracterized his slow processor with "calmness" in order to fit the "elite talent" narrative, and this flaw is more endemic to this natural game.

This coming year is crucial for Dahlin.

Outbidding?  That means offering more than anyone else.

Seriously, how could I answer that without knowing roughly what other offers are out there?

It probably would need to include Lafreniere.  They have lots of high quality assets.  I would not believe that players like Lafreniere or Kakko are “off the table” just because some Rangers fan sites wrote it.  Dolan and Drury, and maybe Sather, will decide who is available.

(Fox I think is truly untouchable.  Their best NHL player and soon to be captain.)

I am asking you to take a guess dude, and this is all speculation anyway.  Of course you don’t know, if you did we wouldn’t be speculating and dreaming up scenarios

    I’m getting this vibe too.

I hope that Dolan thinks he finally “fixed” the Knicks, so now it’s time for him move on to “fixing” the Rangers.

He hasn’t been super involved in Rangers stuff, until just now it seems, so I’m not sure how many hockey fans realized that this guy is kind off his rocker.  It’s absolutely possible that he almost mandates his neophyte GM to outbid everyone else and acquire Eichel.  He is that kind of cray cray.

What would consider outbidding out of curiosity?

I think there is a distinct possibility that Dolan, owner of the Rangers, continues his recent Svengali behavior and orders Drury to pay whatever it takes to get Eichel.  That might be the best path to a bountiful return for the Sabres if they decide to trade him.

If the majority of media mocks and Ranger fan mocks ring true, I want nothing to do with a Ranger trade.  Rangers would have to deal an “untouchable” to get me interested (Lafreniere, Fox) plus a goalie.  I could care less about a collection of soft, middling prospects they have.  Not interested in Kakko either.  The fact they don’t have a center prospect to deal, throws cold water on their best offers as well.

The only trade partner that seems viable currently is LA. They have the center prospects and the defensive prospects to make the trade all while needing minimal cap help to fit in Eichel.

Yeah, I agree.  I'm higher on Turcotte than Byfield, but either one represents anything better than the Rangers could offer up, unless the Rangers were willing to part with Lafreniere/Fox (unlikely).
