Everytime something like this is announced it really gets me thinking ... I will be 56 in early October and there is a history of cancer in my family.

Think positively my friend.  But I definitely know what you mean.

    - Dahlin is not going to be a HoF, a Norris Trophy winner, or even a perennial all-star in his career.  I know he is young, but I just don't see it.

    - The hiring of Adams is going to leave the Sabres as the laughing stock of the league.

    - Another bottom ten finish and Eichel will tap out.

    - Oloffson will top Skinner's goal total in a big way, making the 9 mil contract look even worse.

    - Borgen will surprise on the blueline.

    - If they go with Ullmark and Hutton again, goaltending will be the #1 reason why the team is on the outside looking in.

Thorny and Liger’s heads are going to explode....steer clear of the blast radius.  I feel the same way as you as of right now, but let’s hope we are terribly wrong with our hot take.

I also agree with your other hot takes.  A decade of losing will have this impact on you.

Botterill traded more picks than Murray. It's a funny thing that that's the narrative around Murray but not Botterill. Botterill pissed away mid round picks like they were valueless.

But that's ok, we have Jimmy Veeeezey instead of the option of an offer sheet for Cirelli.

Murray tossed away 1st and 2nd rounders, thus the narrative.

I think this is too generous.

Pstranak for Eichel is not a good deal.  I  think Debrusk will become a lesser player once he takes off that "B".   Not sure that Beecher is anything special either.

We need a Super Star coming back plus a whole lot more.

As many have stated, Boston is not a very good trade partner for us on many fronts.  Since Pastranak is there only "star" forward under 30, he would have to be the centerpiece coming back, with ++++ being added for any GM to consider.  As Liger stated, I would not only want to win the deal, but also break Boston in the process.

Even if Eichel discretely wanted to be traded, I would prefer something like Turgeon for LaFontaine years ago as you suggest.

In the course of the conversation about Cozens going back to juniors, I looked up the WHL scoring. Cozens sits in third overall for ppg.

So what? That isn't the interesting part. The interesting part is who sits at 2nd overall in the WHL at ppg... Seth Jarvis. Further to that point, Jarvis lead his team in points by 28. At 7, the Sabres could do a lot worse than taking Jarvis who I think is shockingly underrated.

    I love this kid.

Excellent detective work here!  This guy wasn't even on my radar (due to ignorance on the player), but I have to say, you bring up some compelling points and he shows pretty well.

He was a truly horrible skater.  People mistook that for not trying.  TBH, I needed someone more aware than I was to show me what he did wrong on the ice to really get it.

He, like Barrasso and Housley, also had the misfortune of being around after Bowman was canned -- they bore the brunt of the residual anger people felt for him.

All true.  But I wouldn’t say Andy-chuk was a bad skater in a “technical” sense.  He was just slow as molasses.  Best pair of hands I have ever seen though.  Brad Miller was a horrible skater.  To this day, I’m not even sure he could skate without a few pushes.

If you want to vicariously live out your aggressions, Brandon Montour should not be your outlet of choice.

I didn't say it was my first or only choice.  You take what is convenient.

If Kadri got punched every time he said something to someone like what he did to Montour, he would look like this.

Talk about reaching to fabricate a story.

I don't see it that way.  That is actually a pretty apt contextualization of where we are at.  It might seem blown out of proportion, but when you are this pitiful for this long, relatively small things like this tend to get blown up quite a bit by a frustrated fan base.

This is my favorite post in this thread.

Me too but again, is that naturally the reaction or not? Pekar would naturally start laying the lumber because that is who he is. I don't want the mirage of toughness. You are either that type of player or you aren't.

    giphy.gif

I don't disagree with that sentiment.  But as I posed in my first post, do we really have a collection of players like that?  Is it Krueger?  Or is it something else not easily identifiable?  I'm not Brandon Montour expert, but I was under the impression he played with an edge in Anaheim.

I'm not expecting everyone to skate around like a bunch of raving lunatics (although that would be nice), but do something that shows fans you care.  Whether true or not, it looks like a bunch of guys collecting paychecks out there, and it has for a very long time.

Sure in the same way adding Dalton Smith to the team was going to lead to better play.

You either play like that because that is who you are, or you don't. Like that means with heart and drive. Suddenly punching a trash talker isn't changing jack ***** just like Dalton Smith and all his toughness didn't mean jack *****.

But it did, for at least a period and a half, and we pretty much quit playing aggressively after that time period too.  At least the game was entertaining regardless of the outcome.

We have nothing now but a bunch of tulips who can't hit, fight, score, or pass.  I don't know about you, but I'm not a tough guy, but I would be embarrassed enough to start lashing out at this point.  Show something for goodness sake!

This was commented on in passing in the GDT from last night, but I thought it deserves it's own thread.

This reminds me of the Lucic incident when he railroaded Miller for fun and no one did anything about it.

For the record, I totally agree with Kadri's assessments of both Montour and the team in general.

But it still sucks!  It's just a shame we have no one on this roster to punch a total punk like Kadri in the face after that level of trash talk.

The fact that Montour didn't do it himself speaks volumes to the type of guy he is--spineless.

He's a great Jason Botterill find.

Is he spineless or is Krueger telling him to avoid altercations?  I have no idea what the answer is by the way, but I'm suspicious of Krueger.  Can these guys be really that weak?

    3 minutes ago, LGR4GM said:

lol, if you need to punch someone for trash talk you are weak as ***** mentally.

This isn't a political debate or a business meeting though...its hockey.  I want to vicariously live out my aggressions through Montour, so I have an outlet.

Hmm, I saw what you are describing for the first 15-20 games this season, but not since then.  He has been much better.  I think he had some growing pains with Kreuger, who I think has really tried to not force him into a role/situations where he will be overwhelmed.

Im adding a video that shows a definite “flash of brilliance” to lighten your spirit.  I also picked this one because it highlights Dahlin keeping the puck in and handling the puck at the offensive blue line, something I thing he has done a really good job of this season.

Your video does help, as i do tend to forget some of these things.

Yeah, I just don’t see it.  Perhaps the optimism has been sucked out of my soul slowly over the past decade, and I’m being overly critical and focused on shortcomings.  But when we get lucky enough to draft a supposed best d prospect since Potvin, I expect to see more immediate returns.  Again, “he’s only 19” just rings hollow with me.  Yeah, I get it, but Dahlin is supposed to be special and superior.

Folks can site statistics and metrics, and it makes for a good substantive argument, but after 40 + years of passionately following this stuff, I can’t go against my eyes and intuition.

How the heck do you "take out the excuse of age?"  The kid won't turn 20 until 1/2 the league is in the playoffs.

You say he "looks like a 19/20 year old defenseman most nights."  You mean he looks like he's playing in Juniors like all but the smallest handful of defenders are playing?

He's got the 2nd most points ever for an 18 year old defenseman* and on pace for the second most ever for a teenaged defenseman*.  Unlike Turgeon and Housley, he isn't afraid to play physical (even though he's still just a kid) and he's willing to go to the "dirty areas" (which explains his concussion from earlier this year).

All of this against NHLers playing for a team that is fairly lacking on top end talent.  Imagine what he could do on Tampa.

    * If teenage D-men that played a significant portion of time at forward are discounted, he vaults to 1st and pacing for 1st on those metrics.

How do I take away the excuse?! I simply judge the player the way he plays, as we all should.  Youthful inconsistency is one thing, but this season, he’s been generally sub par night in and night out.  I could do the mental gymnastics to delude myself into thinking all is ok, but I’m just tired of it.  Much like Myers, I don’t see a guy developing, but getting overwhelmed.

Listen, I’m not saying dump him for a 3rd rounder, but I can also be honest with myself and say I expected more, and I wouldn’t be hurt if he was dealt for a Kings ransom.  I certainly expected flashes of brilliance here and there.  And that is probably what truly concerns me, I haven’t really seen much that stands out or shifts where you could see the makings of a dominant player.

Feel free to revisit in a couple years, and point and laugh at me for being a fool who couldn’t see this in Dahlin.  I hope you can.

Turgeon & Housley, too.  The days each of those bums got sent packing for real hockey players were great.

Dahlin is no Stinky Pete nor Wowwie.  They'd better not trade him.

But see....what has he done for you to say this with such certainty ?  If you take out the excuse of his age, his play over the past two years has been largely lackluster, and I would say he's flat out struggled this year .  And speaking of the age excuse, isn't he supposed to be a prodigy and thus far ahead of the curve for typical defensemen his age?  The guy looks like a 19/20 year old defensemen most nights.  If he was a forward, we'd all barking to send him down, but alas we must put our rose colored defensemen glasses on.

He shows spurts, but overall, m'eh.  I think this would be a good time to have someone else buy the hype if we could get a boatload for him.
