  1. @SabresProspects: Like Bennett/Draisaitl plenty, but give me the calm, disciplined, brilliant playmaker. Reinhart has been that guy since day one.

This has been my thought process the whole time. Don't overthink it.

Yeah, I totally agree. It seems like the "easier" pick is the right one in this case. I wouldn't cry if we picked Bennett or Draisaitl, but my gut tells me Reinhart is the blend we need the most even if it isn't flashy.

  2. Here's someone else that just might be available in trade at the draft: http://www.denverpos...me-chilly-again

Executive summary: Colorado is taking O'Reilly to arbitration.

Myers for O'Reilly straight up? Or Myers plus a #2? In that situation I wouldn't be unhappy if the Sabres drafted Ekblad.

And then add Callahan as a UFA?

So next year, the roster would include 3 nice additions in Ekblad, O'Reilly and Callahan.

Now that would get some excitement going.

If we could get O'Reilly for Myers straight up, it would be a modern day miracle. Although it is pretty apparent that Myers is viewed from two completely different lenses (people who think what you see currently with him is what you get, and people who think he's barely tapped his potential). I'm in the 1st camp, so I hope Colorado is in the 2nd.

Am I the only one who thinks Ritchie is a dangerous pick?

I'm always leery of under motivated big guys; scouts fall in love with what they could be, not what they are.

I'm thinking he's got Jim Sandlak or Andrew McBain topside.

Loved the Ekblad interview, both the way the kid (I would have no problem with him at 2) came across and the way Murray did.

I couldn't agree more on Ritchie...see my views on Tyler Myers. I haven't seen any of these guys play live in a game situation, so my opinion isn't worth much on any of the prospects. But from what I have read about him, and comments from people who have seen him play, this guy has bust written all over him.

  3.

Remember the May Day goal? The Sabres swept the Bruins that series. The Sabres were then swept by the Habs in 4 consecutive 4-3 games. Hawerchuk had 14 pts in 8 games in those playoffs. I could be wrong, but I don't think that any other Sabre has ever done better than 1.75 ppg in a playoff year.

Hawerchuk's .65 goals created per game in those playoffs were best in the NHL, ahead of Gretzky and Lemieux.

    http://www.hockey-re...s/NHL_1993.html

Thus I have presented further evidence that Dale Hawerchuk may be the greatest hockey player to have donned the Blue and Gold.

Statistically,Hasek and Hawerchuk, are apples and oranges.

These are great facts that you are bringing to the table! He also might have been one of the best passers the Sabres ever had. The guy could thread the needle like no other. He had 80 assists playing on the 2nd line in '92-'93, with the likes of Randy Wood. If that isn't impressive, I don't know what is.

  4. Both players have a lot of mileage left.

FWIW....the Blues really asked Miller to play a different style.

3 more PP goals and this is probably St. Louis's series.

Ott did Ott's thing. He hit everything, and chirped, but it really didn't rattle a composed Chicago.

Both guys will be in the league for years to come.

    \

Different style? If that makes die hard Miller apologists sleep at night, go for it. I like the "he just wasn't good enough" excuse myself. I guess I can blame Leino's lack of production these few years on a "different style" as well.

  5. Man oh man what do you do if you're the Islanders. Ive been hoping they just give us their top 5 pick this year, as we will get a solid player and a year earlier. But now that I am thinking about it, I will regret it so much and Ill have a pit in my stomach next year if the Isles suck and/or win the lottery and get McDavid or Eichel wondering what could've been. This situation has to be 1000x worse for Isles fans/management. There will be so much pressure on them next year to win its not even funny. I think I've changed my opinion. i hope they give us the pick next year. It will give me something to watch and look forward to, and even if we don't get a top pick or even top five, we are still getting a 1st round pick and a great prospect in next years draft. For a chance at mcdavid or any of the top prospects, even if it is small, i will gladly take it.

I am "rooting" they give us next year's pick for similar reasons. I will be that much more motivated to wish ill of the Islanders, and if they do go in the tank, I can enjoy some Sabre wins without as much internal conflict.

  6. Maybe its wishfull thinking, but anyways we really can't lose, but Islanders need defense more than the oilers even.

Islanders need experienced defensemen, but not necessarily defensive prospects. Their prospect pool is pretty thick with talent on the back end (Pulock, Pokka, and Reinhart to name a few). With Strome and Nelson graduating to the big leagues, the cupboard is pretty empty with forwards. I see them going forward if they keep the pick, unless Ekblad suddenly falls in their lap of course.

  7. For being a "susperstar" he never made the Sabres a significantly better team. The best we could do was scratch and claw for 8th place every year. And, he hasn't/didn't make a ton of difference for the Isles. Those 4 first rounders from the Oilers would have done a lot more to rebuild this team that a (very talented) forward who doesn't put in a consistent effort every shift.

It really didn't do much for Edmonton either, did it? I am always perplexed as to why people think of Vanek as "lazy" or didn't put a consistent effort in (not trying to pick on you, just see it differently). I can think of times he was late on the backcheck or went through hot/cold spells, sure, but that is the case for almost everyone. On average though, I thought his effort level was pretty good, and if anything, his weakness was that he got too down on himself. I just find it strange how people adhere to pre-conceived notions when their eyes tell them something different.

Case in point: Zemgus comes back to the bench gassed, the majority of fans respond: "Wow, that guy is working hard". Vanek comes back to the bench tired, and the response is, "Vanek is out of shape", or "Does he smoke?". I honestly think it is only because one guy is out there taking the body, while the other guy is focusing his energy on beating defenders and setting up in front of the net. Throwing checks has better optics in terms of "hard work" I suppose. In any event....I needed to rant this morning....

  8. In my mind, we're definitely tanking at least through the end of next season. Trade the UFAs we're not interested in at the deadline. Maximize the 2015 draft picks.

At that point, we can get the geiger counter out and see how much radioactive fallout is left. If it looks all clear, we can crack open the lead-lined doors of our emotional bunkers.

If it still looks like we need even more picks/prospects, etc, then we'll have to get creative. Trading the UFAs we picked up this year and next year. Examining Myers, Ehrhoff, and Weber, etc. Things could get really dark then, especially if the kids aren't ready yet.

That is a great line my friend!

  9. I agree the heart was not the primary reason for our record. Talent was and will continue to be.

But Rolston seemed incapable of installing that go-through-the-wall-for-each-other, ###### the-world, together-until-the-end mentality. Most of us were prepared to handle losing, just not the soul-sucking, numbing brand of losing we have endured.

Nolan's best skill is creating that warrior feeling.

That is what will carry the players - and the fans - through this tough rebuild.

When I first heard Teddy was coming in the idea left me cold. Retread. Pandering. The game has passed him by.

But I am starting to see this as the first of what I hope will be many good decisions by Pat Lafontaine.

No one should kid themselves; we will be bad this year, and next year too. Teddy isn't going to fix that.

But the years have ground down the hopes of even the most optimistic members of the Sabres family.

What the franchise needs most right now is reason to be believe.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it isn't talent either (although I agree we aren't bathed in an overabundance of it). It is just that most of these guys aren't using their talents, which is a subtle difference. I certainly get the impression these guys are overthinking everything, and are too robotic. It can be perceived as a lack of effort or lack of talent, but it really is a lack of instinct. I have no delusions of grandeur, but someone who is not an X's and O's guy leading the charge might just be the perfect tonic. It might not lead to many more wins, but a more entertaining product. I am really keen to see how Myers starts to play.

  10. It's widely accepted that a new GM usually wants his own guys. So I always wonder why people are so outspoken on getting rid of Nolan. Hell, the team got a hell of a lot better after he left. Could he have done the same thing? Sure. But I doubt he could have done any better.

Nolan is only reason why Buffalo didn't fall into the abyss in '95-'96. Hasek missed significant time that year if you recall. We weren't world beaters, and ended up missing the playoffs, but boy, that team was fun to watch. And we had Rob Conn, Brent Hughes, and Dane Jackson on that team....not a who's who of Sabre lore exactly. Randy Burridge was our big time sniper.

  11. I'm a little shocked they gave it to Vanek. I expect him yo be gone this time next year. I think we resign Ott for 1 year at the deadline. Vanek is no where near those two other players so shouldn't be mentioned with them. It would also have been nice if he remotely lived up to his contract :(

What are your expectations based on his contract?

  12. I am not on board with a goalie early . But how the hell is a kicker compared to a golatender when a golatender is on the ice for a full 60 minutes and a K maybe on the field for 3-5 minutes top

Simmer down buddy. I am just underscoring how bad of a pick that would be (i.e I am exaggerating).

  13. Oilers should take Nurse if they are smart but they may take Nichushkin. If they do, I am all for Horvat at #8... you heard me say it.

Uhg I guess I will hang out until we pick. I am sure we get a good player I should be happy.

    The trend suggests Nichushkin.

  14. As I said before, this was going to be an extremely anti-climactic day.

All I have to say is....we better not draft Fucale in the 1st round. Something just tells me that is going to happen though.
