Great Christmas gift last night as (i think) for the first time all 3 first round draft picks had a positive result for the Sabres. Plus we had Philly, Colorado, Carolina and Arizona pick up 2 points. Unfortuntaly there is nothing Santa can do about the Oilers who now have 1 win in their last 19 games -could they have made a deal with Satan? and no I don't mean Miro I listened to their post game radio show last - a lot of callers and the host excited about their positiion in the McEichel derby. I want McEichel badly for the Sabres but wouldn't trade their franchise for ours even with McEichel on their roster. anyone else?

I don't think there is any doubt he will go in top 10 - Maybe even in the 5-7 range. You don't see his combination of size and skating abilty very often, plus he has a non-stop motor. I think he is a case of where you have to look deeper than just the stats to see his impact. He hasn't put up a lot of points with Kingston this year but for Canada at this summers Ivan Hlinka he did lead the team by scoring 6 goals in 5 games - a team that featured Strome, Marner and Barzal. You will have a real good idea about Crouse over the next two weeks.

Thanks for the great post .55. When Ross mentions ranking him 4th - I believe he means OHL prospects behind Marner, Strome and Zacha(?) not the draft. I will be in the minority but I take Hanifin all day and twice on Tuesday. He will create a ton of offence from the back end, he does everything well. I then think you have the freedom to trade Myers (or Z) for the scoring forward they desperately need. I believe that Provorov will also end up ahead of him by the time the draft. I would switch Marner with Barzal - I actually have Marner at #4 - the 155lbs will scare a lot of people but to me he is Patrick Kane 2.0 I think we now have to hope the Blues and Islanders go out in the first round. If this happens there is plenty of talent in the 15-20 slot. I would still like to see the Sabres package some picks to move up the draft board.

They are in every game because their goaltending has a save % of .930 while the opposition has a save % less than .900 over the last 14 games. Not because they are even in terms of puck possession and shots take - a hot goalie can cover up a lot of warts.

you are absolutely watching a different team than I am. I still see the same crap team with a hot goalie - there is no upswing in their play. They are the worst offensive team in the league and one of the worst defensive teams in the league (even over the last 14 games). Their PP sucks and the Penalty Killing isnt much better. Yes, we are past the tear down stage, now we sit at the bottom of the crater for a year, two or maybe even 3. The upswing is a mirage - dont be fooled. Your pulling for a team to win on the back of a hot goaltender and will be counter productive to the long term future of this team. Soon - when Enroth plays back to his career avg the Sabres will shoot back down the crater. Lets hope its not too late to secure a top 3 or 4 pick when it happens.

Its amazing to me that Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Patrick Sharp and Dustin Byfuglien ever survived the culture of losing during the 2005 / 06 and 2006 / 07 season with the Black Hawks. Hope someone can explain cause I would assume their careers would be ruined forever! i could be wrong but I believe they may have added elite talent found at the top of the draft and amazingly that was that for the "culture of losing".

I think you would really have to question the character of any player if 4 months of losing ruins them forever.

I will give you that - I hate when people say the Tank is/was a waste if they don't land McEichel. I hope this team finishes last but stay in the bottom 4 or 5 and I will still argue it was worth it.

I agree with you on this point but how many games have been won because of the young guns compared to how many have been won due to a hot goalie? funny, cause didn't Murray just say that he hates seeing assets walk away for nothing? hmmmmmm

no one has ever said this - its about improving the odds of winning a cup. I don't believe anyone ever wanted to players to lose on purpose but this is a team that more often than not gets outshot and completely out played - I dont want this team to miss out in improving its talent base because of a UFA goalie on a hot streak.

Just read the Leo Roth article in Rochester paper and now my blood is boiling. Why are those who are Tank supporters thought of as bad fans? he says now "loyal" fans can cheer the Sabres turnaround? why am I a disloyal Sabres fan (a fan for 40 years no less) because I believe the best way to improve the odds of the Sabres winning a cup is by sitting through 4 more months of losing hockey? There is no way I am cheering after the Sabres get totally outplayed and by some miracle pull out 2 points by winning the NHL coin flip dressed up as a shoot-out. we argue about needing X amount of top 5 picks in the lineup needed to win the cup. the bottom line there are multiple ways of building a Stanley Cup winner but lets be honest -adding a McDavid or Eichel to the already impressive prospect pool improves the odds! Does anyone disagree??. How are tank supporters bad fans because we want to enjoy something the Sabres haven't had since the 90's when Mogilny and Lafointaine tore the league up - a true elite forward?? he then points out the chances of the Sabres landing McDavid by finishing last. How many times do people haver to be hit over the head with this?? - its not about our odds of McDavid - Its about guaranteeing Eichel. Anyone who doesn't know about Eichel when they post, tweet or write articles - I then have to seriously question how much of a loyal fan that person is. Rant over

Sabres are ruining Murray's plan---what does he do??

that statement is soooooooo wrong. There are at least 5 other guys in this years draft that are looking to be 1st line players or top pair D. Its a terrific draft and goes much deeper than McDavid and Eichel. Dont, however, fall out of the bottom 7 (perferably not bottom 4). That being said I am still Pro Tank and have not given up hope for them to fall back into McEichel contenders. I'll re-evaluate my Tank position in another 10 games or so. Dont forget the #1 point leader in the OHL (ok tied with Strome) and #4 on your draft card- Mitch Marner. -
im all about Marner if we drop out of top 3 . think he goes 4 or 5

ibelieve thethou odds of winning a cup increase substancially with either mcdavid or eichel. thats why i am pro tank. though i can live with an improved team led by Z, Risto and girgenson as long as they dont move out of bottom 5

Changed my mind after watching Marner once again - definitely #4 ahead of Strome (with or without Grigerenko in the pipeline). Over last 23 games he is scoring at a 2.39 PPG clip - McDavid at 2.83 before he was hurt. His skating and vision is exceptional - Patrick Kane 2.0 - book it. And yes not scoring at Kane's clip in his draft year (2.50) but dont forget he wont be 18 till May while Kane was 18 for most of his draft season. I had a conversation with a scout and he said he is rated higher than anyone in the 2014 draft. It may get to the point where Marner isn't thought of as a consolation prize for those not winning the McEichel derby.

This is not about having "fun" its about building a cup contender. I want to my to win because they dominate puck possession, out-shooting the opposition not relying on incredible goaltending and 1 forward line. The BEST way to become this type of team is by obtaining more talent and the BEST way to get high-end talend - TOP of the Draft. Winning like they have been is detrimental to the long term success of the team, in my opinion.

its the same team with lights-out goaltending. Outshot 45-19 and win??? Winning under this scenario is not possible long term - unless you have Hasek in net. It makes me sick seeing this team win like they did last night.
