  1. These pics, and the guys in them are the reason I'm still a fan. Can't shake those childhood memories. I was 8 when the Sabres were born and because of them in the 70's, I'm compelled to still follow crap like the past month

    Doing this again...

You only get an 8-year deal if you were on the roster of your current team prior to the previous trade deadline.  Ergo, the Sabres can't give him 8 yet since he was in Carolina at the last deadline.

David Byrne and co. are the only Talking Heads worth listening to, on this and pretty much any other matter.

Does this mean that the Sabres can give him 8 after the turn of the NHL year because he will have been with them through this trade deadline, assuming he does stay ?

So JBott must be taking trade offers for Skinner at the same time Skinner's agent is making offers for a contract. And then asking for something else in a trade while making counter offers in contract talks. Those must be some interesting discussions going on with the top brass weighing those options. It's funny that JBott looked like genius getting Skinner but might come out looking worse if the guy just walks away and we get nothing, or even if he trades him for a decent player (defense), people will hate him. I have very little confidence Skinner resigns. Hope I'm wrong, though.

I think the deadline will likely tell us how confident Botterill is that Skinner will sign. If not traded, I expect the organization thinks he'll sign. Am I correct that currently he can only sign a 7 year contract while he can sign for 8 after the season?

    R. Dahlin scored his 1st NHL goal the last time these teams played with assists from Skinner and Rodrigues

    THIS DAY IN SABRES HISTORY

    • The Sabres are 8-10-3 all-time on December 13.
    • December 13, 1972: The Sabres defeat the Boston Bruins 7-3 in a game which featured 154 penalty minutes, including 76 by the Sabres alone. Among the penalties was the infamous fight that featured Sabres defenseman Jim Schoenfeld crashing through the zamboni doors with Bruins forward Wayne Cashman.
    • December 13, 2008: Thomas Vanek scores the 10,000th goal in franchise history in a 4-2 win at New Jersey.

      SAM I AM

    • Sam Reinhart enters tonight’s game on a career-best seven-game point streak (5+5), topping his previous career high of five games set from Dec. 20 to 29, 2017. It’s the third-longest active streak in the NHL, trailing only Mikko Rantanen and Alex Ovechkin (12 games each) and ties as the longest by a Sabre this season.
    • Reinhart has recorded 23 points (8+15) in his last 23 games, including eight two-point games during that stretch. With eight multi-point games through 31 games played this season, he is two shy of his career-high 10 in a season.
    • The Sabres are 13-3-2 this season when Reinhart records at least one point and 25-3-5 (.833) in his career when he records at least two.

Buffalo enters tonight’s game with a 10-3-2 (.733) record at home this season. The team’s .733 points percentage at home tied for fifth in the NHL entering play Wednesday and puts the Sabres on pace for their sixth-best home record ever, and the best since the 1979-80 season (27-5-8, .775).HOME COOKING

Has any Sabre received the 3 fighting major game misconduct since Schoeny did 46 years ago today?

The emergency goalie needs to be in shape and playing regularly in local elite level league.... source: my adult league goalie is one of the emergency's for the Kings.    The Kings check up on him on a regular basis to make sure he's still in game shape and injury free.     They actually have 4 emergency goalies.    Each game there's 1 for the Kings and 1 for the away team, and they split the games in half throughout the season so he gets to go to half the home games.     He parks under the Staples Center and keeps his gear in his car during the games.    He's only been called on once and didn't even need to dress, just be on standby with his gear bag in a changing room.    He doesn't get any gear from the Kings, nor does he get to dress in the locker room.    He gets 2 tickets in the lower bowl with all-access arena pass, free food, etc.

Interesting - are the emergency goalies designated as "Kings" or "visitor" for each game?

Do they monitor the free food, etc. consumption during the game in case needed?

  6. Went to a couple Bisons games in their last season and countless Sabres games at the Aud until I moved out of NYS in '83.

My first Sabres game was late season against the Blues. It was a weeknight, but cub scouts night. Since I had school thenext day, Dad took me home at the end of the second period. Bert broke the rookie goal record in the third period.

I lived within walking distance of the Main Street bus line. Collected many milk cartons and rode the bus with my buddies to watch the Braves.

What a magnificent barn that was - I even remember the gray seats and the orange addition.

For reasons I do not understand, I cannot post in Flagg’s First Goal thread, so here ...

Dahlin, first shift, joining Gare, Mogilny and .....  Rob Ray!  Historians, check my math.

Me neither. I voted for Dahlin and expect him to join that triumvirate in a first shift of his career goal to send every Sabres fan into a frenzy!

  8. The first time I recall being in the Aud was for a Bisons game.

I remember the Oranges being added. If you were never in the oranges you can't imagine how steep they were. I have enough acrophobia that I was uncomfortable jumping up for a big play - Sabres goal, big bucket for the Braves, etc.

Schoeny takes on Orr, Cashman, and Vadnais. I learned three fighting penalties result in a game misconduct.

    I could go on. . .

I grew up and found hockey with The Big Bad Bruins and The Broad Street Bullies.  I chanted “We want Ray” wearing a suit in a suite.  The combination of athleticism and menace made hockey overwhelmingly my favorite sport before I found the same combination in lacrosse.  I viewed each game as a contest, but also as a passion play of good and evil, justice and just desserts.

As fighting diminished, I attributed it to marketing wizards looking to broaden the game’s appeal.  I lamented and mumbled things like “shooting themselves in the foot, not understanding the essence”, etc.  No one called me a dinosaur, but I recognized myself in others being so labeled.  No matter, it was the label that was incorrect in my mind.  There was no profit in arguing with someone who’d not watched Keith Magnuson and Wayne Cashman go at it.  “They just don’t understand.”  I wondered if I’d survive the tedium of 80 game seasons, in a low scoring era, without the menace and edge of your seat moments fighting provided.  I remembered the BACK TO BACK nights with the Bruins.  Anticipation and time to send a message.  “We’ve got Hartman and Shoebottom exchanging glances!”  I educated my kids and referenced The Code, the Order of Chivalry and Jung’s Collective Unconscious.  “It’s all on display, in two and a half hours, if you look.”  I have four kids; two boys and two girls.  My GIRLS’ first jerseys were Ray and Kaleta!

Life provides perspective.  I watched my heroes deteriorate.  I am no longer a kid watching adults.  Instead, I am an adult watching kids.  That lens change is significant.  I wanted Playfair to fight my battles against rivals.  I wanted to BE Maguire.  After becoming an adult, loving kids, and learning, I’ve come to a new place.  I can’t abide watching today’s kids take risks for my entertainment.

Made me a little wistful for Schoeny v. Orr, Cashman, and Vadnais but, alas, I'm older now

Stories like these lead me to support taking much of the violence outof the game.  I cringe at some of the hits/fights I cheered for in the past.

These guys are human.  I’m not interested in viewing them as gladiators any more.

    Like many others, I agree.

This is one reason that for years I have enjoyed Euro hockey on the larger ice surface.
