Great thread.
I'm currently reading "Cold Mountain" -- civil-war-era fiction recently made into a movie. I'm not far into it but so far it's very good.
If anyone needs some lighter vacation/beach/pool reading, I've just read a few books in the Joe Pickett series by CJ Box (murder mysteries set in Wyoming with a game warden as the protagonist) -- pretty enjoyable.
I've also recently read "Freedom" and "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen -- outstanding contemporary US fiction.
Finally, if you're interested in really well written short stories about the immigrant experience, I recommend any of Jhumpa Lahiri's collections.
I read almost no fiction, but I read Cold Mountain when it first came out. A wonderful read - Charles Frazier put together such beautiful language, that I have never seen the movie for fear of having the book "ruined".

I reread Zen last summer - a wonderful read
Currently reading The Ice Balloon by S.A. Andree

I was annoyed he upstaged Farrah the day he died... I just can't believe it is still in the news.
It is clear that MJ couldn't handle living in a world without Farrah and his ticker gave out as soon as he heard she was gone! I know my adolescence would have been different without Charlie and his girls.

I have yet to figure out ticket scalpers. There are always plenty here in Memphis at the AAA baseball games and college football games. Neither are ever close to sold out and scalpers are generally demanding box office prices until after the game starts. Unless you are running late and want to avoid a line at the box office I can't understand paying the same price to a scalper.

Are you ready for tomorrow night Corp? The Sabres haven't even showered yet.
HGere's hoping Drury is at full strength - I'm not sure where in the leg he got hit but it will really be swollen tomorrow.
-
That was a clean hip check!!
reminded me of a Mike Robitaille classic!
a 1-0 score with the chances we've had and the way Khabibulin is playing is a very scary situation at the end of 2.

As I was flipping through channels last night I noticed several hockey games were on leading me to conclude it was time for Center Ice's midseason "freeview". Does anyone know the dates - I need to know whether I can watch my Swordsmen or I need to listen to XM.
-
We're going to score a PP goal here, causing the "expolsion" with two PP markers in the same game!
Oh yeah - we win it in OT
-
peters out, stafford in.
Thanks. I just noticed that listening to the second period. any explanation of the reason - other than talent and the ability to roll 4 lines of real nhl hockey players.
-
Just when I think it doesn't get any better than a genuine "top shelf, where momma hides the cookies" call Batman chimes in with - you don't get a better backhander than that, I thought it was Don Luce for a second!
XM rocks!
-
Well, he's either going to learn from it, or he could wind up like that guy with some funky Russian name who got booted off the Senators team because he refused to go to Binghamton (although, not to that extreme).
Doggone it! I just lost my XM feed. It got replaced with Chicago at Calgary. What's up with that, XM?
Same here in Memphis - a first for XM and I'm p'od about it

Your comments on the backup goalie are interesting. I'm listening to the 'burgh broadcast on XM and they said Dennis was the backup in the pregame.

Injuries or not, I don't see how Pittsburgh has the talent to steal this game. Sabres 3, Pens 1.
At the end of two. I have an idea - we had a one goal lead after one, a two goal lead after two, how about a three goal lead after three?
-
I heard on WGR earlier that the reason for the distinction is because a player (cannot remember the name) born in Europe and moved to Canada at age eight has more games.
For the youngsters that player was Stan Mikita.

"the Sabres will win it in regulation"
What an odd phrase to use - I'm not sure how that works!
-
What a glorious day indeed!
My sentiments exactly. Thanks for giving us our updates PA!

PA - always a font of information. This expatriote had no idea Clip Smith was dearly departed!
Local news in growing up in Buffalo in the 60's & 70's was very special compared to the dreck that passes for local news today.

Were any coaches quoted at parades on June22?
-
Although I was at the Aud in '79 when the navy & sky blue clad Pens ousted us the "preliminary" round became the "terrifying preliminary" round a few years earlier thenks to Eddie Stanowski of the St. Louis Blues!

I remember Gare being very bitter to the tune of something like..."How could they do this to me after all I've done for the team".
In hindsight, Foligno had 10 good years for the team and Peterson was a solid checking center for 4 years. It's safe to say Foligno was one of the most popular Sabres in their history.
This is not a knock on Mike Foligno at all, but I don't think his popularity EVER rivaled that of Schoeny or Gare.

"Robert .......Rene Robert, in OOOOOOOOOVVVVERTIME!!!!!"
I suspect that the future will put Tallinder and McKee goals on the same plateau as Hajt's!
-
I have finally put my finger on why King Kong was and will forever remain my least favorite Sabre. I still remember the goal and it did melt the hate for a few minutes!
-
What no comment on anyone's physique????????
-
PA - I suspect that by later in the week you'll be reminding us that Rene Robert was one of the few who figured out how to beat Bernie during that series. Maybe the weather helped? Maybe we'll even learn how Jim Lorentz subbenly became Batman!
These posts bring back a ton of memories. Unfortunately bebinning a few moments ago they won't ALWAYS be fond!
