It may be a sign of my own aging that I thought to myself "Gilbert's looking well!"
Me too, although short in the photo

Calder, 50pt season, consensus best defender ever
You want go big or go home -
Bobby Orr with good knees!

I think the Sabres have done the simulcast since 97-98. Pete Weber did two years on radio before that, the last season at the Aud and the first season in MMA. It would probably help Dan a lot to let him do every game (on the radio when Rick does games and on TV otherwise) and let him get into a better rhythm. Sometimes he's like the goalie who hasn't played in six starts. When he's on TV, they could have a backup radio guy (Hammy anyone?), so Dan would always know what master he's serving, the radio listener or the TV "listener." Never both.
I agree - I think one problem is he's neither Ted nor RJ. The simulcast is also a huge problem for him. He'd be much better if he was only "calling" the game for a single audience. I generally listen to games on satellite radio and need to know when a goal is scored

Yep.
And with words like Hedman, Doughty, and even Lidstrom being used, Svech would have to literally be Ovechkin and then you still might take Dahlin.
I've repeatedly read these names as comparisons. Why doesn't anyone ever talk about Borje Salming? Any reason other than age?

No love for Jiri Dudacek?

Schoeny, Gare, Bert in that order.
Age has a lot to do with it. I was present as a kid when Schoeny took on 3 Bruins, spilling into the Zamboni corrider. Gare scores seconds into his NHL career to open the season. Bert was, well, the best there was and a pleasure to watch. I remember Carriere quoted as saying Bert made playing easy - get the puck, take it behing the net, wait for Bert to come back and get it - watch him go 200 feet and you're plus 1.

This year or '73-'74.
Bert injured, Horton deceased, missing the playoffs right after "thank you, Sabres."
i'd also throw in losing to the isles in both 76 and 80. those were cup quality teams and the ens was just awful.

Back when I had the DirecTv sports pack, even without CI you'd get the pre and post game shows. I'd often listen to the game on XM radio and turn on the TV postgame show

Lehner has faced more rubber in seven games than Ken Dryden would face in a month.
And I have to stop using '70s references if even the other old guys don't get them.
I think I'd prefer Ken Dryden

The most talented Sabre since *11*.
Just let him play, like they let Perreault play.
this times alot!
if you didnt get to watch Bert live growing up you may notunderstand. you dont want to ask someone like Bert or Jack to be phil esposito

Can't argue that one. He has the dreaded potential, size, shot, offensive accuem and defensive nasty to do so. Shoeney the only one close on both O and D. But Risto has higher O potential. Housley best O Defenseman would take a lot to overcome that talent. Overall though Risto has the best combo of skills since Shoney.
Risto can't sing or play guitar like Schoeny!
Ramsey, Schoeny, Housley, Korab/Hajt are the names he needs to surpass

You must be thinking of Game 2 in Buffalo that went to double overtime. Isles won it and took a 2-0 series lead.
Apparently - I still remember the depression
If anyone is wondering how the Sabres ended up playing Vancouver in the first round, there was a new playoff format that year with 16 of the 21 teams making the playoffs. The playoff teams were seeded 1-16. The Sabres were second and Vancouver 16. Exactly what was the NHL thinking?
The first round matchups from 74-75 until 79-80 didn't lack for drama, I will give them that. If you didn't win your division those five seasons, you had to play a preliminary, best of three series. The Sabres barely survived in 76 and 78, then lost to the Pens in 79. It was nucking futs.
Complete NHL playoff format history. Great bathroom reading.

Bernie Parent was one thing, but Ed Staniowski made this young kid realize a hot goalie could steal a series!
It was a looooong way down from the oranges in 79 while the Pens were celebrating

To read Budd Bailey's book, that first Core in team history was very fond of what-ifs and if-it-hadn't-been-fors. They blamed their loss to the Islanders on nine days off after sweeping the Hawks.
Do I recall correctly that the Isles scored in the last minute or so of game three when the game appeared headed to OT?
-
Gary Bromley in goal for Cuncks, right? That was the first playoff series I ever watched. Then Chicago we swept and ran into the Islanders.
Bob Sauve came in and won last two games of the playoffs after falling behind to Islanders 3-0
Tiger Williams clubbed Scotty Bowman! I remember that, but had forgotten. This is nuts, I'll have to watch whole thing later
Mike Ramsey is #23!
Didn't remember Bones played for anyone but the Sabres.
That team was deserving of a better fate - it was crushing losing to the Isles, who wouldn't lose a playoff series for several years

Sorry guys, but there's this kind of important baseball game on tonight. Pre-season hockey doesn't trump postseason baseball. (Go Jays)
OK blue Jays . . . Let's play ball!

Al Smith's retirement still brings a smile to my face every time I'm reminded of him leaving the Sabres organization

I'll raise a Goose Island IPA!

What about the gray seats in the Aud?

Thx. I am a big Housley fan. I have another photo of Larry Carriere jumping on a Seal, but I'll save that one for another time.
The only player I miss that was traded away is Compher.
I want Vesey to sign here, because I think he is great fit for us and we for him long-term; frankly better then all his other options. However, the progress Bailey and Carrier have made along with the drafting of Nylander makes me very comfortable about our future on the wing even without him.
As to trading forwards for D, I really only want to upgrade Franson this season at this point. Between Guhle, Nelson and Borgen I think we have a enough depth in the system to replace guys like Franson, Bogo and Gorges long-term as their contracts end. However, we need a bridge player or two in the 5/6/7 slots at the NHL level until these prospects are ready. I think you'll see hockey type trades in this area once we get deep into training camp; depth forwards to depth defensemen.

I think I recall the Carriere photo - are both of his legs flying in the air, almost parallel to the ice?

Although, looking back at some of those mid-80s rosters, it is confusing to see how many points the plugs put up. Hard to get an apples:apples comparison.
start by looking at the size of the goalie equipment. if ken dryden had todays pads he might have a gaa below 0.25!

absolute gem of a find, PA.
it is always interesting to hear rick's voice, back when.
p.s. how much speed - coke? uppers? - do you think was involved in that sort of fracas?
also: what's the backstory?
If that was in 72-73, the back story may well be the Gerry Meehan goal with 4 seconds left in the 71-72 regular season that knocked the Flyers out of the playoffs.

Great discussion. The reason I loved Schoney was he was an awesome leader. Anybody roughing up the french connection was going to only do it once. He played hard all the time. Those 70s were some fun times.
Agreed - the only bad thing Schoeny ever did was record an album!
I was lucky enough to be present when he destroyed Orr, Vadnais, Cashman and the Zamboni doors
-
These threads a get a little more depressing every year.
Who was the best president, grandpappy? Well, *spits*, it was either Teddy Roosevelt or his Uncle Franklin, I reckon...
Agreed, PA. BUT - I haven't enjoyed watching a Sabre rookie as much as Eichel since Bert, Rico, and Schoeny. Good times are on the horizon - we'll be as much fun to watch and winning like the current Tampa team soon

I wish you patience - years ago I had poison ivy as bad as your picture. It's miserable for days to weeks depending on your body, but it does go away. You also learn to NEVER experience such an outbreak again.
I slept in long pants/sleeves for several days so the sheets didn't rub the blisters
