  1. I find the definition of "generational player" interesting.

I never thought of it being the player who define san era - I always thought of it as a player so great, you are lucky if one comes along in each generation. If it is merely the best of an era, frankly you are simply talking about someone who belongs in the hall of fame at the end of hi career. If, as I believe, a "generational player" is someone so far above the other's level of play that thy might only come along once n a generation (generally defined as every twenty years) then I think since I began watching hockey in 68 or 69 you are talking about Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky.

Yes, you can win a Stanley Cup without a generational player as I see it because a Cup is won annually and I don't think there is currently a "generational player" in the game. n the other hand, having grown up watching Bert go end to end was ALOT of fun and he did help us play in a SC Final

  2. RIP Guy, and thanks for posting 716. Like a few others, I learned to love hockey watching the "Pepsi -caps" from the Aud greys. I remember being confused/sad that we were losing Trottier, Villemure and others just because he Sabres were coming.

  3. I've got to agree that "Thank you Sabres" and beating the Soviet Wings are unbelievable memories.

My favorite goal was probably the OT winner in the Forum in the 75 semi-finals - we were coming home to vanquish the Habs!

Favorite game I attended was watching Schoenfeld beat up Cashman - in the Zamboni entrance, Orr & adnais in the same game his rookie year

  4. The 71-72 Sabres won only 16 games, the current Sabres are on pace to finish with about that many wins. I don't see where rebuilding means you have to suck, through 9 games this team seems to be moving further back instead of forward.

When does the rebuilding start ? At some point you have to remove all the wrecking balls before you can start rebuilding.

One difference between this team and 71-72 is that tie games no longer exist. Under 71-72 rules this team is still officially winless!

  5. Great thread.

I'm currently reading "Cold Mountain" -- civil-war-era fiction recently made into a movie. I'm not far into it but so far it's very good.

If anyone needs some lighter vacation/beach/pool reading, I've just read a few books in the Joe Pickett series by CJ Box (murder mysteries set in Wyoming with a game warden as the protagonist) -- pretty enjoyable.

I've also recently read "Freedom" and "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen -- outstanding contemporary US fiction.

Finally, if you're interested in really well written short stories about the immigrant experience, I recommend any of Jhumpa Lahiri's collections.

I read almost no fiction, but I read Cold Mountain when it first came out. A wonderful read - Charles Frazier put together such beautiful language, that I have never seen the movie for fear of having the book "ruined".

I was annoyed he upstaged Farrah the day he died... I just can't believe it is still in the news.

It is clear that MJ couldn't handle living in a world without Farrah and his ticker gave out as soon as he heard she was gone! I know my adolescence would have been different without Charlie and his girls.
