  1. Note that I think this one is looking like 50-100/hr (depending on who you read), so it's not going to be 4th of July up there, just the occaisional shooting star.

50-100 is nothing to sneeze at as far as meteor showers go. average showers have between 15-30. this is supposedly one of the strongest meteor showers for the next several years.

though to be fair, no--it's not going to have 150-200. i can't remember which shower it was, but several years ago, it was ridiculous. if you blinked, you likely missed a couple. THAT was a good meteor shower.

  2. Is that going to be visible everywhere? I've never witnessed a meteor shower before, and I think it would just be awesome to see.

you should have no problem seeing it out your way. just get as far away from any lights as you can, bring a lawn chair, snacks, drinks ... camera, if that's your thing, and enjoy the show.

oh. obvs that clouds will ruin it all.

  3. Slayer-Slipknot concert last night was awesome.

OK, most of you folks have figured out that I am solidly into middle-aged-dom. I have no business having that much fun at a freak show like a Slipknot concert. Yeah, Anthrax, Motorhead, and Slayer are in my wheelhouse, but barely. Speed metal was just a bit outside of my usual music choices and their prime was about a decade after my formative musical years. But.... my son was dying to see Slipknot. And honestly, a good part of me wanted to see Lemmy and Motorhead before that old bastard dies on stage somewhere. He can't sing worth a ###### but he's an icon, right?

Anywho... the concert. Anthrax can still bring it. Of the 4 bands that played, I was most familiar with Anthrax. I was disappointed because the crowd was still filtering in when they wrapped up their set. I would have liked to see what kind of energy they can generate with a full crowd. Motorhead are iconic. But they did play like old men. No surprise seeing as they are in their late 60's. Slayer put on a hell of show. About a 1 hr set of speed metal and pyrotechnics. The crowd was amped up.

And then came the freak show. OK, before this concert I did not "get" Slipknot. I like angry, loud music. Always have. But most of their stuff is not music I would leave on the radio. And I'm well beyond thinking that musicians in costume are cool. Last night these guys showed me why they are headliners. They had the crowd whipped up into a frenzy like I have never seen before. Ever. The energy under the tent was unlike anything I have experienced. They are today's KISS and they can work a crowd like KISS only wishes they could have back in '83. The show was visual, intense, chaotic, and frankly, it was infectious. Even this old guy was into it. They sucked me right in. While they were on I was thinking, "I don't hate this at all". By the time the show was over I was thinking, "damn, what a great show". Those sumbitches are great entertainers.

    I "get it" now.

did anthrax play efilnikufesin? i'm the man? caught in a mosh? i loved them back in high school. haven't seen them or heard anything of theirs since about 1991. good to know they're still playing.

  4. giv

Helped a buddy move last weekend and he gave me his old 40" LCD TV that he claimed didn't work. Said he figured I could fix it if I wanted.

So far it works fine except for not always wanting to turn on. Problem solved by turning the power strip off and on again a few times. Bought an HDMI cable on Amazon and now I'm running it as a second monitor.

    Awesome.

    give it up for freebies!

  5. Her current haircut sucks though. I saw her in some of her promotional stuff for TDKR and she's got ridiculously short hair going right now. I've never been a fan of that. I'm assuming she has it for her next role in Les Miserables.

That's exactly why she does have it. And not to throw down a dissenting opinion, but she's one of the few people I've seen who can pull off that hair style well. of course, she could probably buzz her head and look just as hot.

    </opinion>

  6. Got my approval email to sell tie-dyed shirts at our local farmer's market every Saturday until the end of September. Pretty stoked about that. Also got accepted to sell at our local town festival August 3rd and 4th. $15 for adults, $10 for kids. Want to make socks and hats, but I'm running out of time. Still have 150 shirts to dye! Finally figured out the smiley face. Not a hard design from a banding perspective, but getting the dye bottles to cooperate is a bitchallenging.

    Awesome!

  7. I'm sorry to hear what your sister in law is going through, hopefully she can get some professional help. As for her "friends"..... Wish Them Well.

VICTIMIZED, BEREAVED, AND DISAPPOINTED, SEEMINGLY AT EVERY TURN, I still resist feeling defeated, or cynical. I have come to believe that anger and grudges are burning embers in the heart not worth carrying through life. The best response to those who wound me is to get away from them .. and wish them well.

All that you can do is wish them well

All that you can do is wish them well

Spirits turned bitter by the poison of envy

    Always angry and dissatisfied

Even the lost ones, the frightened and mean ones

Even the ones with a devil inside

Thank your stars you’re not that way

Turn your back and walk away

Don't even pause and ask them why

    Turn around and say goodbye

People who judge without a measure of mercy

All the victims who will never learn

Even the lost ones, you can only give up on

Even the ones who make you burn

The ones who've done you wrong

The ones who pretended to be so strong

The grudges you've held for so long

It's not worth singing that same sad song

Even though you're going through hell

    Just keep on going

    Let the demons dwell

    Just wish them well

I love that song. Between that and "The Garden," I think they've managed to encapsulate the reason for human existence.

We've talked to her ad infinitum about moving, finding new friends, ditching them ... she just can't do it on her own. And as an adult, we really can't do anything other than support her. Doesn't mean we have to like or agree with her choices, but we can be supportive of her. It just irks me cuz she was always so sweet and bright, happy ... now she's just this shell. You can literally see just how dead she is inside. It pains us to watch her go through this time and time again, but ultimately, it's her choice. We've offered to let her stay with us with the understanding that it's a place to crash rent-free, with no parties, no guests ... a bed, pillow, clean towels and rags, and unlimited food and use of laundry machines. She's never taken us up on it. Probably because of the "no parties" rule. Sorry, but I have two little girls who I'm not going to subject to that kind of lifestyle. Not with drugs, alcohol and what-not.

Grah. What can we do but keep on loving her and supporting her?

  8. my sister in law is suicidal. i don't mean that in some colloquial throw-around term; i mean she is literally thinking of ending her life. right now, she's sleeping on my parents in law's couch.

that's not my complaint. my complaint is how she's constantly treated by her "friends." all of them are back-stabbing, duplicitous snots that, if i had more time to hang out with my SIL, would get an earful and a good case of the b****-slaps. she used to be this sweet, charming girl. her current friends are these self-righteous, entitlement mentality jerks who pretend to be nice to her in front of her ... only to turn around and sh** on her every chance they get. and she keeps taking them back because she has no self esteem any more because of her f***ed up ex-husband, who long ago stripped her of any sense of self worth.

no--my complaint is how some people in society have no regard for peoples feelings. my sister in law just turned 30, and most of her friends are around the same age. how does one decide at the tender age of about 30 to sh** on one person "because it's funny"?! we complain about gun laws and pro/con gay marriage issues ... screw all of that. if we can't decide as human beings to step up and say "enough is enough. may we *please* start treating people with common dignity and respect?", then we have no business handling other issues that are only off-shoots of this one constant, original problem--treating people with decency and kindness.

  9. A friend of family had a giant party two weekends ago that he called "freedom fest". From the sound of things, he dropped almost as much money on that party as he did on the divorce. Some of the stuff involved:

    -helicopter rides

    -those bouncy houses for kids

-removed the bay window from his house so that it could serve as a stage for a live band

very few times to i throw out this word, but that ... is ... epic. i don't ever plan on getting divorced, but even if i did, i'm pretty sure that's not how i would do it.

  10. First day back to work after a week-long vacation in Oregon. BIG fan of the scenery; not at all a fan of the political slant. The coastal areas are just ridiculously gorgeous though. Went to Cannon Beach, Neskowin Beach, and Astoria. Hiked Multnomah Falls (at least partially), and generally just enjoyed the time off. And now, I'm back behind my desk, in my Cube of Solitude. *sigh*

EDIT: OH! HUGE highlight: stopped by "The Goondocks," for any of you fans of The Goonies. Chatted with the lady who owns the house for about 15 minutes about daily visitors, pros and cons of living in Astoria's second largest tourist attraction (first is "The Column"), other movies filmed in Astoria (e.g. Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy), coastal differences between Oregon, California and pretty much anywhere on the eastern seaboard, other things to do in Astoria ... she was really, really cool. I feel like I should send her a thank you card for all the local tips she provided.

  11. I get to see my brother for the first time in a year today. Then I'm heading up to the falls with the lady friend later in the day. I may have to post about that trip later tonight.

ideally speaking, in this thread. :)

funny story about the falls ... so my wife is from utah, where all the national parks are a half day's drive from salt lake and pretty much in the middle of nowhere. yellowstone, zions, bryce, moab ... all 4-5 hours away, and all are in pretty remote areas. we went to visit my folks in WNY back in 2004. being her first trip out, she was really excited to see the falls. from my old house, it's about a 30 minute drive, none of which is considered "remote." as we were getitng ready to leave, she packed up some books (she was in the masters program for speech pathology at the time, and thought she'd get in some studying on the drive). i just kind of chuckled to myself, got in the car, and we all took off.

30 minutes later and after going over the GI bridges, we stopped at the 3 sisters. "okay, we're here. " she got this really confused look on her face, as if we were pulling some prank on her. "wait ... what? no we're not. what's this place?" the look on her face was just priceless. all the buildings, all the tourism, all the trappings ... and in the middle of it all is this incredible waterfall. she just couldn't grasp it. "why are all these buildings here?!!"

after we got back to the house, we started talking about the differences between the falls and yellowstone. it really made me really appreciate the pristine nature of all the parks we have out here.

  12. Going to the one here. I think it's in Oct?

Nice. I might try to make the Buffalo show in October as well, it's either there or Charlotte since Rush has neglected Raleigh yet again.

they're bringing an 8-piece string section to help out on this tour. didn't end up with vegas tix like i had hoped, but this is just the first leg. they'll be doing another leg next spring/summer/fall.

it's heavily rumored that they'll be doing clockwork angels in its entirety. you lucky bass turds. 2013 can't get here fast enough.

  13. That is fantastic. On that same note, if anyone wants me to ride their motorcycle(s) around for them, I'm sure we can work out payment options. I'll supply my own gear.

Fantastic: 10-day bike trip starts tomorrow. In rough order of states: MD, VA, NC, TN, maybe GA and AL, KY WV, OH, NY. Riding the mountains.

nice! road trips are the best. enjoy the ride man!

  14. came home to a package from shirtchamp.com. it's time to get tie-dyin'!

backstory: stumbled across this obsession with tie-dying about 11 years ago. bought some crappy little kit from a craft store, and threw together some shirts. truthfully, in looking back on those now, they truly were horrible, but we thought they were awesome at the time. and who knows ... maybe in another 11 years, i'll look at some of my shirts now and think "yah ... utter sh**."

for fun, we ordered some dyes from dharma trading and made shirts for our family and friends as christmas presents. they were a *huge* hit. everyone loved them. since then, we've made a scant few for birthdays and what-not, all to rave reviews. someone suggested that i start selling them. i thought they were out of their mind. sites like etsy are riddled with tie-dyers who have way more experience than i do.

for kicks and giggles, i threw some pictures up on facebook and said, "anyone interested in something like this, i'll make you a custom shirt for $10." a few people gave me their shirt size and favorite colors, and i made them shirts. they wore them, and told their friends where they got them. their friends wanted shirts. they MSGed me over FB and asked if they could have one or two. "sure."

my aunt ordered 18 shirts for her family's reunion in july. with her outstanding payment and everything else so far, i've made over $400 by just playing. with that extra cash and with some internet savvy on how to get cheap hotels, we're going to moab in a few weeks for next to nothing. and that's IF i don't sell any more shirts. the more i sell, the less this trip costs.

moral of the story: if you have a hobby that's kind of artsy-fartsy crafty, you *might* consider posting somewhere and asking if anyone will buy your crap. you just never know ...

    F'N FANTASTIC!

  15. I alluded to this in a previous complaint, but now I need to complain even more.

I've had temporary full custody of my three year old son for 3 weeks now, with a hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. His mom (my soon-to-be ex-wife) and her live-in fiancee are being investigated by DSS for child abuse. Both the investigator and his pediatrician are ready to claim it's abuse, and not "slide related bruises" as mom/bf claim (my son, in detail, has explained what happened to 4 different people, saying he was punched repeatedly by the bf). So DSS turns it over to the police two weeks ago, and the detective has yet to act on it. When I told the DSS guy on Tuesday, we was very upset, because he "gift wrapped" this for the detective, and said he wished the detective would "get off his duff and get to work." The DSS investigation is supposed to be over, with the results released, tomorrow, just in time for court. But since the police haven't done anything, we have to wait until they finish their investigation, dragging this whole thing on even longer. Now I have to try for a continuance of custody on Tuesday, instead of just permanent full custody.

Needless to say this has flipped my world upside down, but my boy is doing awesome. He's never been better at daycare, and his teacher will be testifying on my behalf saying that the angry, emotional behaviors he used to exhibit on days when his mom would pick him up have disappeared.

i feel for you, man. the state and the AG/AAG should be pressing charges if your boy is able to articulate exactly what happened. sounds like you got a bum detective. i'd call the station and ask if another detective could be assigned to the case.
