  1. leaving in an hour to run home and wait for my telephoto lens to show up. ordered this lens, and it's on the truck for delivery. two great things about this:

    1. tonight is this year's "super moon." 32k miles closer, 30% brighter than normal, and 15% bigger than normal.

    2. the annular solar eclipse runs straight through southern utah in 2 weeks. this gives me time to tinker with my solar filter and settings to see what i can come up with as decent and proper settings.

  2. I have tickets to see The Tragically hip (it will be my first hip show) in Niagara-On-The-Lake the day before Canada Day (Can't be truly Canadian if you haven't seen the Hip on our around Canada Day)

nice! my first two hip shows were back-to-back nights in vegas and phoenix. two completely disparate, polar opposite shows. in vegas, gord downie looked and acted like he was on an acid trip. in phoenix, he was as mellow as a summer breeze off a still ocean. it was amazing. let us know which version of gord you get!

  3. semi-off topic, but for those of you who have an iphone (and maybe android ... not sure if this app has a google-compatible version), pick up songkick from the app store. it scans the music on your phone, and tells you who's coming to your neck of the woods. absolutely indispensible app for concert enthusiasts.

    as for my list:

rush--day after thanksgiving at the MGM grand in vegas (that is a *big* "HELL YES!")

    ane brun, may 19

    primus, june 19

grace potter and the nocturnals, july 30.

    norah jones, august 21.

    metric, october 5

    any concert playing here.

my brother says that the tragically hip will probably play in denver this year. if they do, we're taking a road trip.

  4. Don't they just call those 'Reese's Pieces?' ;)

No no! Peanut butter M&Ms are fundamentally different in many aspects.

Reese's Pieces are about the size of plain M&Ms. Peanut butter M&Ms have way more peanut butter in them, and are approximately the size of peaunt M&Ms, though just a tad smaller.

The quality of peanut butter used in PB M&Ms is superior, in my opinion. it's not as gritty or chalky as what you find in Reese's Pieces.

And lastly, the shell. The peanut butter M&M holds up better in a crunch test than does the Reese's Piece.

Oh, wait ... you don't care about any of that, do you? :)

  5. Excellent work, gentlemen. It's SO worth the effort - nothing tastes as good as that feels.

i dunno ... those orange flavored hostess cupcakes are pretty divine.

    as are cheese puffs.

    and 5-layer burritos.

    and peanut butter m&ms.

    and ...

well, the list is long. :)

  6. I just walked the trash out to the street. My jeans wouldn't hold up on the way there. Came back, came upstairs to change, and it was all I could do to prevent them from pooling at my ankles on the staircase. Good stuff! Back down to a 34, at least. (The jeans are Levis, and they're stamped 34, but c'mon, we all know that a Levi's 34 is a real 36.) It's starting to pay off.

i'm having the same issue with my jeans (except i'm still nowhere near a 34 ...). thankfully, our office complex has bathrooms set up literally every 50 feet on my end of the builidng. makes it nice for having to stop and hike up when i'm walking to the cafeteria.

stepped on a pallet jack (only scales we have around here) about a week ago. down 27 pounds. that's frickin' miraculous.

  7. been down and out for about a week with cellulitis. for those of you who've had this, you'll know what i've been through. for the rest of you, pray you never get it. it's ... unpleasant.

to add insult to injury, boss gave me crap about coming back to work monday and tuesday. i ended up taking off last tuesday through friday, and came back to work monday and tuesday. took off yesterday for the same issue. he stopped by my cube this morning and said, "see? told ya that you should have taken short-term."

  8. Dyngus Day at the terminal.

i have a *lot* of fun memories of the terminal before all the restoration. we used to sneak in and climb up to the top, pop the hatch, and hang out on the parapets (literally, hanging out, as on sitting on the edge).. got some great night shots of downtown (though this was 17-18 years ago with a not-so-great point and shoot.).

    LOVED.

anyway, on my list of things that are awesome is ibuprofen and water. i've had wicked, excruciating back pain (again) since tuesday morning, keeping me up until 1 am tuesday night/wedensday morning. my family is in a mode where we're trying natural remedies before we'll automatically reach for the OTC meds, and to their credit, some of them worked, just not well enough. and not for nearly long enough. at least with ibuprofen, i know that i'm going to get direct results for 8-12 hours. with these natural remedies, i have to use them every hour or so. anyway, finally caved and took some ib around 1 am, and ended up falling asleep.

  9. The season is over for the Sabres. :(

it's semi-sort of humorous reading all the topics that are popping up at the top of the list. this, the supersition thread, where will the sabres finish in the standings ... like you have to open them to know what they're going to say. :)

    what'dya do ...

  10. Hearing your daughter say to you, in a very concerned voice..(and this happened this morning as i was doing my Insanity workout)

"Daddy, please stop..all those people are in their 20's, your almost 50..I don't want you to keel over"

    :wallbash: :P :P

    Friggen Kids

BTW, i work out usually after I drive them to school, so they have not seen me do these workouts yet. Had to do early today

my kids say stuff like that when i grill a rib-eye or a rack of ribs. they're hilarious. "daddy ... you're going to have a heart attack! do you want to DIE?! and leave us without a daddy!?!" it's hard to take another bite after hearing that ...

  11. wanted to work an 11 hour day so i wouldn't have to come in so a) i could get my 40 in, and b) so i wouldn't have to come in tomorrow. i got in 2 hours later than i wanted. i also want to get home and watch the game. if i stay until such a time that i can watch the whole game, i'll only get 9. i then either have to come in for 2 hours tomorrow, or i have to take PTO, or I have to stay until 7 and miss pretty much the whole game.

right now, coming in tomorrow is looking more and more probable, but if i come in, then my boss is going to ask why i'm not working my other 4 hours towards next week (i asked him if i could work 10s this week and next, and he agreed, but he's also forgetful).

were this twitter, this post would actually be closer to 4 or 5, and i'd hashtag it #firstworldproblems.

  12. It is for this line of work. They were up front about it with me. As it is, DOT regs allow for no more than 14 hour workdays, so this actually goes under the wire.

As for being in my own bed each and every night, I can't wait. I've been out on the road for almost 9 years. I'm done with the Interstates and being hundreds of miles away from home. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see my wife's reaction when I broke the news to her earlier today.

hey man! congrats on the potential new gig! that's awesome!

out of curiosity, when did it switch to 14? i had to study up on HOS regs a few years back, and at the time, the reg was no more than 16 in a 24 hour period, with a minimum 8 hours rest in between periods. i take it that's changed now?

    whatever. congrats!

  13. Geocaching. Great lunch time activity, and it gets me out from behind the computer a *lot* more often. Best of both worlds for me and the wife: she loves doing things outdoors, and I love techno-geeky things. We get to do techno-geeky things outdoors.

  14. What a douche! You I mean....you prefer to buy on Amazon, but you want to take a trip to the mall to dog ear their book, and then buy it from someone else...I think I just found my complaint for next Thursay! :P

Amen to that. Apparently, there is no cost to supplying samples to non-buying customers.

apparently, you two aren't familiar with the "red laser" app. ;)

  15. Copilots. With everything that is so completely screwed up in the passenger airline industry, at least they (the airlines, the FAA, the whatever) are smart enough not to have cut the requirement of having copilots on commercial passenger flights.

if the airline industry cuts the co-pilot, i officially renounce flying. i'll funnel all funds that i would have paid for an airline ticket into a gas and extra car maintenance fund and drive everywhere.

  16. Personally when I'm at a game I want some rock music to really get the blood flowing, but maybe it's a generational thing. My first choice would have been Unstoppable by Pop Evil, but browsing the videos on youtube it appears the Red Wings either use it or it's an unofficial Detroit anthem. So I settled on A Warrior's Call by Volbeat:

I'd even pay them to adapt it a little to the Sabres.

    absolutely approve.

I'd like to see the Sabres take a completely different approach to music than the rest of the league and sports in general.

You want to instill a proper sense of fear, dread and intimidation in the hated opponent, right?

I think strains of Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky ("Battle on the Ice") is the right thing to pipe in throughout a Sabres game, instead of the lame pop stuff they've been doing for centuries. It's self-explanatory.

    (1:45-10:00)

the guy playing the tambourine completely reminds me of the "cowbell" skit from SNL.

"I've got a *feevuh*. And the only cure for it ... is more tambourine."

  17. not sure if any of you are in to webcomics at all, but i've been reading Questionable Content for about 3 years. Jeph Jacques did a guest strip over over WereGeek the other day, so I started reading that.

And if you're of above average intelligence, XKCD is a hilarious read.

  18. first off, to shrader, that's frickin' awesome man. hope he can recover speedily and get back to full health as soon as possible!

second, today is the day. it's going to be 70, and i'm leaving at 1:30. i'm going home, hopping on my bike (pedal bike ... not motorcycle. i know there are lot of fans on here, so to allay any confusion ...) and i'm going on a couple hour ride. music, headphones, and bike path that stretches for 16 miles one way. should be interesting ... i haven't ridden more than a couple of miles in years, so i might have to work up to a lengthy ride, but whatever. gotta start somewhere!

OOH! and it gets even better. there are a TON of geocaches along the bike path. F'N Fantastic!

  19. I pitched an *incredible* idea to my boss earlier in the week. He loved it so much that he set up a meeting to show our department head. The department head absolutely loved it. He said he was going to talk to our product line developers to figure out how we can roll my ideas into existing software and create stand-alone help files for our proprietary software.

"Dude. How is this a complaint?"

    Settle down. I'm getting there.

After the meeting, I chatted with my boss. He said I needed to chat with a guy from our training department who had been working on some Fireworks and Dreamweaver-based CBT, and find out how we can use both. So I went and spoke with who I now refer to as IRCW (interesting repute co-worker).

Immediately upon opening my help file, he went off on a huge rant as to why my idea is HORRIBLE and why it would NEVER replace actual training. "This provides NO hands-on experience. How are you supposed to provide hands-on training with a HELP file?! Don't these engineers understand ANYthing?! This will never work."

He kept ranting for literally half an hour about his experience with CBT, and how much more beneficial it is, and why it needs to be the choice over my help file. FInally, I cut him off and said, "Explain to me this: where in your COMPUTER-BASED training does the field user get the experience of actually hooking up hardware? Hmm?"

You could hear a mouse pissing on cotton. But then he started ranting again. Finally, i just grabbed my thumb drive and walked off.

This guy has a real habit of trash-talking anyone else's work. No one else provides any value to the company but him. According to him, it's "his" company.

    Yah ... frick.

  20. So, I get hungry but don't have time for a sit down meal. I want an Arizona iced tea so I go to the corner Sunoco station. I walk over to the frozen foods thinking I can microwave something quick. And there it is, a small frozen pizza right next to the french bread pizzas. Mmmm I'm thinkin' 3-4 minutes with one of those metallic crispers and I'm eating. I get back and read the instructions. Do Not Microwave. ###### me. Now I have to wait until I get home. Sooo hungry.

you know ... bacon is microwavable. just a hint.
