  1. Riding the bike to work and lunch in January is awesome. I'm going to ride at least one day each month this year, I can feel it.

if i didn't work 30+ miles from home, i'd do that too. as it is though, i bring my bike down here and use it to get around our campus. i also take longer lunches in the spring/fall to take a nice ride around the area. great way to lose weight too!

  2. I thought we already had a breasts thread.

    :clapping:

    anyway ...

big fan of the iPhone. this is not meant to incite a an-droid vs. apple fanboi flame war. it's what i own, it's what i use, and it's what i like. internet, text, sports scores, *REALLY* love the red laser app for all kinds of reasons--price hunting, bar code generation for any URL, etc. i love the fact that apple finally has a cloud-based music storage system, though i'm not in love with the current implementation (no actual streaming--just the ability to download. in a lot of ways, audiogalaxy has this beat by a landslide, but whatever. for that matter, so does amazon's cloud music storage and google music).

anyway, that is all. also, breasts. thanks to status quo for pointing out that. :)

  3. never thought 40 could look this good. ;)

    F'N FANTASTIC!

in celebration of my b-day yesterday and my mom's today, my brother is taking us out to eat to ze tejas--not sure who all is familiar with that joint, but for the sake of understanding, it's a sweet mexican food joint. free food courtesy of the bro.

my daughter is officially OFF her ADHD meds and we have her on completely natural supplements and oils (lavender, frankincense, etc). those are working so much better than the concerta was. on that, she'd never eat anything, then she'd wake up grumpy as hell and go to bed grumpy as hell. meanwhile, she lost 4 pounds in 5 months instead of maintaining or gaining because the medicine drastically suppressed her appetite. she was literally starving, and it didn't matter how much food we offered her--she wouldn't eat it. didn't matter if it was mac and cheese, grilled hot dogs with a swimming pool of ketchup, or scrambled eggs ... she wouldn't eat anything. it broke our hearts! so we tried this natural stuff, and mother of pearl, she's so much better. eating 2 servings at every meal (probably to make up for the last 5 months!), angelic morning through night ... it's miraculous. THAT is F'N Fantastic!

  4. Thanks. Me, along with Wayne Gretzky, Eddie Van Halen. and I think Chris in UT(?).

SIR YES SIR! happy birthday to you! i'm leaving work at 3 (a request of the wife ... "DON'T COME HOME BEFORE 3:30!!!!" ummm ... okay?!). what are your big plans for your day?

  5. I love my dog, but man is he ever testing me lately with the whole incontinence thing. Sat. night I was up from 3-4am with him because he'd pooped on the bed and tracked it everywhere so I had to take off the top blanket and put him in the bathtub. Sunday morning I come back from brunch and he's pooped in his bed. Tuesday and Wed. evening I get home from work and he's tracked poop around the living room and dining room so I've had to mop, spot-clean the carpet, and put him in the tub both nights. This morning I wake up and he's pooped the bed again (although at least he didn't step in it this time). I can't take much more of this... I feel like I've been cast in Groundhog Day: Number Two.

are beat up on as well). I think the summers are 'close enough' in height (1.6mm different), but that's right at the limit Subaru recommends (2/32").

Not to mention two weeks ago my cat was sick and I had to take him to the emergency vet. I was a few hours from being -1 cat. :(

Sorry about your pets. Bio, how old is your dog? That sounds sadly like old age creeping up ...

  6. I'm too young for that

jk lol. My friend up in Maine is still on Dial-up or some variant...but because of where in Maine he is, and because the High speed stuff isn't available yet.

Wow. I didn't realize there are parts of the country where high-speed isn't an option. I guess it makes sense, but still ... dial-up?! He might as well hitch up the horse and buggy and take a fattened pig to the local town hall to pay property taxes. ;)

  7. That really sounds like an awesome trip! you're going to have to share some photo-ops lol!

Trust me--I'm already toying with geotagging apps and my camera settings, and we're brining my wife's lappy to store/upload stuff to flickr on a hopefully daily basis. The only part where it'll probably be a problem is at my dad's house in Buffalo. He doesn't have wi-fi (right ... like this is the 90s or something!), and I honestly think he's still on dial-up.

  8. Congrats. You should always be excited about your birthday. Never know if it's your last. Turned 50 this summer and feel great.

Yah, I'm pretty stoked. Extremely jazzed for this year. Lots of major fun coming down the pike. In May, we're going to St. George Utah to see an annular eclipse. In July and August, we're road tripping from SLC to Buffalo and back in about 3 weeks. Stopping in denver, KC, St. Louis, Indy, Buffalo (for a week), Cleveland, Chicago, Twin Cities area (hopefully), Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse/Black Hills, Yellowstone, and then home. Yah. It's going to be sweet.

Nice! I'm always pumped for birthdays. I have no idea why either lol.

    Here's one for you!

Thanks man! I don't know ... I know so many people who have dreaded turning 40. I just can't wait! Not that my 30s were bad. THey were great, for the most part. But 40 ... it just seems fun, ya know? I have my ###### together, an awesome fam, great kids, incredible wife, actuallly managed to stay employed for over a year (yay no layoffs!), two well-running vehicles, a good home ... what the hell do I have to complain about?!

  9. 16? Where's the Revenge of the Nerds "NEEEEEERDS!" image when I need it? :P

nerdy though that may be, it's pretty damn awesome to be done with college in its entirety by the time many college kids FINALLY settle on an actual major.

@DtM, what did you graduate in? and are you working in that field?

  10. This isn't a complaint so much as an antecdotal story about my daughter and her excellent sense of timing

Yesterday afternoon, I left work to go home and swap vehicles with my wife so I could take the van to Home Depot. We want to put in some new baseboards in our upstairs bedroom before moving back into it (after the leaky ceiling debacle at the end of November), so I was going to pick up a contractor pack. My wife also was supposed to take our daughters to dance class.

Half way to HD, my wife calls and says that my 6 year old is complaining of a sore tummy. I told her I would meet her in the grocery store parking lot (since they had already left too), and pick up my daughter.

After picking her up, I asked her, "Honey, how do you feel? Are you okay?" Her response? "Yah! I get to spend time with my daddy!" Always heart-warming. Anyway, based upon that, I decide to try HD for the baseboards.

As I'm holding the baseboards in hand, my daughter says, "Daddy, I don't feel well. Can we go home?"

"Honey, we're going home right now. Let's get a cart and wheel these to the register so we can pay."

    "Okay, daddy."

Got the cart, loaded 120 linear feet of baseboards on the cart, got to the register, paid, and got out to the van.

"Honey, go get in your seat. I'll load these in and we'll go."

"But daddy, I don't feel well!!"

"I know, sweetie. We're going home RIGHT now!!"

    "But daddy ..."

"Please just get in your car seat! We're almost ready to go!"

She got in her car seat, crying the whole time about not being home ... and then she threw up.

    All over the new baseboards.

Not just a little. We're talking Damian-style throw-up. It just didn't stop. I was able to help get her out of the van for most of the rest, and thankfully, we had a roll of paper towels in the van, so I mopped up her hair, face and clothes as best I could, then wiped down the boards some, then raced home.

When we got home, she threw up a little more, crawled into bed, and passed out just after 6 pm.

If I have any complaint out of all of that, it's that my poor kid is sick. I *hate* watching my kids suffer and not be themselves, especially when they're puking cuz I know they're just miserable as hell. I don't like the fact that my not-even-out-of-the-parking-lot floorboards may very well be ruined (though I highly dobut it), but really, they only cost $60. I can replace those. I can't replace the time that my daughter is sick. She can't play. She can barely sit up to draw or color like she loves to do. She can't do much of anything other than just lie around and be sick. That hurts more than anything.

  11. I've been moderately to severely overweight since I was about 10 years old. Three years ago I made a commitment to start living a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy food most of the time, in the correct portions, and exercising regularly. I was approaching 40 and had no doubt that I'd be very lucky to see 50 if I did not make major changes.

Well, this week I finally hit my goal weight! Three years ago I weighed an embarrassing 305 lbs, today I weigh 173. Total loss of 132 lbs. Went from 3x shirts to M's, from a 52" waist to 34". Doing my first half-marathon later this year.

    I feel F'n fantastic. :)

you, sir, are my freakin' HERO! i turn 40 in about 3 weeks, and i'm still pushing 3 bills. i've committed to losing weight and being more active, but i never dreamed of dropping to THAT. i don't think it's physically possible for me--to much bone mass. i'd be happy with where i was in college, which was a solid 220.

man ... thanks for posting this. i'm printing this and putting it on my inspirational wall.

  12. my complaint: it is not july!!!

this is not weather-related. it's time-related. our road trip to WNY starts july 21, and i'm already planning where to stay, KOAs, looking at quality tents, sleeping bags, air mattresses, tourist interests on or generally close to the 70 and 90, things to do in WNY ... i already know one day will be eaten up by taking a road trip to pittsburgh. my boss has lanyards from every major league baseball team EXCEPT the pirates. i will be filling that void for him since he's being ridiculously cool about this 3-week vacation.

yah ... it's not much of a complaint, but it's 2012. 2011 is over and in my rear view mirror, and i'm not looking back. i really don't have much to complain about.

  13. I assume it's in both of their names as that seems like it's how everything works around here. You and others mentioned the most obvious, that she needs a new roommate, but that's always a tough one. If no one she knows is looking for a move, that leaves her with a random draw, which could be just as disastrous. The serious discussion is the best option now, then we see where it goes from there.

My post in the friday thread last week should make it obvious that I'm invested in this situation for the long haul, so I'll do whatever I have to to make sure it gets sorted out.

good point about the long haul. if you two think you're ready for that step, it would definitely get her out of the roommate-from-hell situation.

as one who's been married for 11+ years, i'm all about the long-term commitment. good on ya for taking the step man! dating was fun. i seriously loved it. but settling on one person ... making them the priority and knowing they've made you their priority ... nothing beats it. i know there are some on here who haven't been as fortunate in their marital sojourns, and to that end, i truly am sorry. i guess i just got super lucky. angelic doesn't even come close to describing my wife. she puts up with all my crap day in and day out, yet she still sees past that and finds the good in me. that is ... it's indescribable.

anyway, sorry for the rant. should've saved that for tomorrow, eh? :)

  14. My complaint: mucus.

Had a cold over Christmas week. No flu, I got the shot, just plugged up sinuses. Now the nose is geting better but it's all landed in my lungs.

I'm coughing like there's no tomorrow. Getting headaches from coughing so much.

    Someone tell it to stop!

as nerdy as this may sound, i will swear by it: rub peppermint oil on your chest. it clears that stuff right out and helps you breathe a lot easier. i've used it the last two times i've had a cough like that, and sho' 'nuff, cleared out the nasty nice and fast like.

  15. Background first: My girlfriend's roommate spent the entire month of November at a fat camp (I had no idea those actually exist). Then on New Years she dropped the "I'm joining AA" bomb. She would go out to bars pretty much every night and come back with some different random guy each time. Then she'd eat every bit of food in the apartment, most of which wasn't even hers. She's unemployed and daddy pays every last bill for her. So yeah, this girl is a complete trainwreck. I've never actually seen any of these people she brings back, but I have a very hard time imagining what type of person would actually show any interest, even for a one night stand.

But anyway, last night at around 2:30 am, she stumbles in with someone. We were both passed out, but once every light was turned on and the loud talking commenced, sleep wasn't really an option. After a while I was finally just about asleep again, but then the bedroom door opens. For god knows what reason, this jackass walked into the room even though it was very clear which room was the roommates. If I had been a bit more awake, that guy would have found himself out on the sidewalk with a bashed in face.

So yeah, glad to see that AA and the fat camp really made a lasting impact (table was littered with food this morning and the box of sponge candy I brought back for my girlfriend was 75% empty). I still can't get past that idiot walking into the room though. We're talking about some random guy picked up at a bar. What happens if I'm not there? The door doesn't have a lock so that's not an option. There's going to have to be a serious discussion on this one because this garbage can't happen anymore.

is the lease in your GF's name? if so, i would kick the roommate to the curb right speedily. obviously she has some self-esteem issues, and getting thrown out of her apartment probably won't help, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. if she can't keep her fingers off of other peoples' food or belongings, then something's gotta change.

i'm sorry man. sounds like a nasty situation she's in.
