I should put this in a different thread, maybe, but 10th inning Grand Slams are awesome.

Those as well.

The Orioles will be in control of the wildcard and within 2 games of the division by August 16th.
-
The QB who will start the majority of the games for the bills is not currently on the roster.

Billy is impressed by all sorts of -ulations.

Just keep arguing with me and then following my advice on QBs and you'll be fine.

Is it racist to accept a white student simply because they had the good fortune of being born into an almost all white suburb with good schools that prepare students for the SAT? If the answer to that question is no, then no, it is not racism to accept a student simply because they were born to black parents. If the answer to that question is yes, then no, quotas are not racists, they are an attempt to level an already racist playing field.

Joe Battista, Sabres VP of Hockey Related Business, has resigned

This verifies the pegula meddling/batista meddling narrative. Pegs is just done meddling, or, I suspect, tpegs is done meddling with the sabres, and kpegs has no love for terry's old friends. whatever. -
Everything in the economy is rationed. Usually by price. Usually to the exclusion of the poorest among us. Food is rationed. I am allowed to have more than the disabled vet down the street. Heat is rationed. I can keep my home warmer than the single mom who lives next door. Education is rationed. Police protection is rationed. Fire protection is rationed. Healthcare is still rationed.

Initially, I thought this post would be attributed to Nobody. But then I look up and it's Taro T. Go figure.

I have meanings and opinions on words, but I find that trying to understand and respect the meanings and opinions on words that the people i am communicating with have is useful. Definitions are nothing unless both parties to the communication agree.

Is anyone else of the opinion that a grill is the wrong tool for cooking burgers? I switched to 100% cast iron griddle for burgers a few years ago and can't go back. I just can't stand watching all that flavor drip down into the fire.

I've enjoyed, and I think benefited, from the conversation, especially the NPR story.

I try to start by putting on their shoes.

To most people, it is not a difference, and it will shut people out of the dialogue. This, as Eleven points out, is a big part of the reason we remain at status quo in this country.
-
Because many have that opinion, we should seek to understand how that opinion is formed, and what we can do to go about changing it. My contention is that driving someone away by using emotionally charged language, even if you believe that language to be accurate, does not further our cause.

Every manufacturing plant I've ever worked in. OH, KY, NY, IN doesn't matter where. Most of my family gatherings, although I'm starting to see that shift. Fox News.

I feel like JJ is reading my words. I also feel like when people go charging in to a discussion about race with "SEE! THAT'S WHERE YOU ARE A RACIST!" that it tends to derail the conversation. I don't think JJ is a racist by his definition, which is certainly a perfectly mainstream definition. I do think that JJ can provide insight into a lot of widely held mainstream views. If we can show a level of respect for the people who hold these views (views which, btw, are largely created by the systems we see as broken and in need of change) and try to engage the conversation on a productive level about the effects of the systems and potential solutions, we can start to seek change. These may be seen as racist in many, maybe even most, circles, but I assure you, I hear them or similar at work on a regular basis. We cannot at the same time claim that America is still far away from a post-racial state, and then claim that the large majority of people see things in a racially-progressive lens.
-
Any definition you might accept, but certainly not all of the widely used definitions in America.
-
This is the problem with the word "racist". It no longer has a coherent definition across all the people involved in the conversation. To one person it means someone who actively discriminates in action against a person based on their race. To another, it means anyone who supports, explicitly or tacitly, the systems that hold down minorities in this country. It's very easy for these two people to talk past each other. We need new vocabulary about these issues so we can actually have the damn conversation.

What is the prevailing legal standard for beating a paralegal in the 8th Judicial District?
-
The behaviors are the same on both ends, but I would hypothesize that the strength in terms of numbers of people (voters), Distribution of those voters over gerrymandered districts, and real economic strength are decidedly heavier on the far right. In other words, the confirmation bias phenomenon is identical on both sides, but the ramifications of that bias on the right are much more significant. Basically what I'm saying is that Fox News has more than 2x the viewership of MSNBC, that viewership is not as concentrated into a few select congressional districts, and that that viewership has a significantly higher ability to financially impact an election.
