I don't see a problem with the deal, I think it's part of a 2 year rebuilding strategy. The 2014 pick has real 2nd round value as early as this year's draft. The 2015 pick has value at the 2015 Deadline to bring in a player for a playoff run. I believe this is the plan for the team. Probably bad again next year, playoff team in 2014-2015. Given the current age of the roster, this is not unreasonable.

Yes, anyone looking for an explosion right now is going to be disappointed. Leo and Regher are the best bets between now and Wednesday. The Sabres will have so much more information on July 1st when they can start conversations about new contracts with the big 3. That's when they'll know enough to make an informed trade. Say we took Vinny and 75% of his salary/cap hit. His cap # for the sabres would be $5.8M. I think this # is reasonable for an established leader with his name on the cup, who plays a position at which we are developing 3-4 players . In all likelihood Vinny is retiring after the 2018 season when his salary drops to $1.5M. So we'd have to pay the "cap recapture" penalty, which would be $2M/yr for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. I don't think this is a terrible idea.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that we could take Vinny and not the whole cap hit? If TB eats, say, $2M, is it a better deal?

I've recently come to the conclusion that there is only one difference between Sports Radio hosts, Sports writers, and the Hosts on the E! network. Both dedicate their careers to "journalistic" coverage of the entertainment industry. The only difference is the people on E! are aware of this, and don't take themselves too seriously.
