  1. My bad news train finally seems to have stopped in the station. I changed platforms and am finally on the good news train. I should get my car back tomorrow and I just got a raise at work! I'm working on a really cool new project too... Power Rangers stuff that's usually reserved for the top dudes in the office. I knew things couldn't be as bad as they were through the holidays and most of January and stay that way. Hope the good news train stops for all of you, too!

Good for you. I have an interview tomorrow so hopefully the train stops at my station too.

  2. The best case scenario -- the *best* case -- is that we finish with the 3rd fewest points in the NHL. Edmonton and Calgary are both in a death spiral already and they're in the West where basically every team is good (except them). So they won't be getting a lot more points between now and the end of the season.

A 3rd-from-last finish means: 14.2% chance of drafting 1st, 43.8% chance we draft 3rd, and 42.0% chance we draft 4th.

Unfortunately, Florida and the Islanders are still within striking distance. Carolina, Winnipeg, and Nashville aren't super far away either. Let's say a couple other teams collapse for real and the Sabres put together one of their patented last-season streaks.

A 5th-from-last finish means: 8.1% chance of drafting 1st, 68.7% chance of drafting 5th, and 23.2% chance of drafting 6th.

And if we finish 6th-from-last or higher, we will have completely squandered the "tank".

Lots of hockey left and plenty of time for the Sabres to get the four-peat for sucky draft position after a sucky season.

This is why you have no friends.

  3. And for that I'm glad. I've said it before, but personally, I want all my professional athletes on PEDs. I get more for my entertainment dollar that way.

I don't *want* them on PED's for my entertainment benefit. But it is their body. I don't give a rat's ass if they decide they are going to ruin it to make a few million bucks.

  4. Hekmet with a cage is acgood idea. So is the mouthguard. The mouthguard does as much to prevent concussion as it does to protect your teeth.

You are going to fall alot playing hockey. Make sure the parts that hit the ice first are well protected. Knees, ass, elbows, melon. Some folks insist on good shoulder pads. They will go along way towards protecting your shoulders during impact with the boards. But I know lots of adult league players that don't wear shoulder pads at all, or minimalist ones.

  5. I know this isn't how it works, but I'd have loved for Torts to put out his scoring line and have them score a goal. Knowing you're going to be down 1-0 should be a bigger deterrent to starting your 4th line than a goon on goon line brawl.

After the Scott- Kessel incident there was no way another coach was going to put their stars out in that situation. And Torts said as much in his post-game presser. He was not going to risk his stars against that lineup.

Does anyone know what preceded that opening faceoff? What happened previously that calgary was motivated to start their tough guys?

  6. I agree with you except a few problems for them.

    1) O'Reilly is a RFA who has shown a willingness to sign an offer sheet

    2) They will have to qualify him at $6.5 million

    3) They do not want to pay him more then Duchene

    4) While capable their owner does not want to spend to the cap

    5) They desperately need top end defensemen

I've not stayed connected to what is going on with O'Reilly and Col but my impression is O'reilly is happy with Roy and if so I'm not convinced O'Reilly will play hardball.

They are weaker at D than forward. Maybe Ehrhoff would go a long way towards freeing a center up?

  7.

Not that it alleviates the need for several more top end forwards (IMO the real reason we need another season of tanking), but I think you could make the argument #8 in a great draft is as good as a top-4 pick in other years.

yep. don't look at it as the #8 pick. Look at it from a results point of view. We have two absolute studs on defense that dominated the WJC. And this year it is looking like top 3 or 4. We have our tank and restock at the end of this season.

  8. They have three very good centers already and o'reilly is going to be very expensive very soon

Duchene, 23 years old, point per game player.

Mackinnon, 18 years old, already a 60 point player

    Statsny, 28, a 50-60 point player.

O'Reilly isnt going to be a top two center there as both duchene and mackinnon are better, and statsny makes more sense as a 3rd line center

Statsny is an FA this year, no? If I am Roy, Statsny is the one that walks, not O'Reilly.

  9. Holy smokes... that was for 2 drinks? You've got a great bar / bartender if they were able to even get their hands on the stuff. If I ever see the 15 yr out (unlikely), I'll have to give it a try... sounds amazing. I'm still meaning to get a bottle of WL Weller.

The per glass price of the 15yr is about what my usual friday night bill usually runs. the total for the two wasn't $100 but the amount of change from $100 made me go :o
