  1.

    That would be nice.

I will say that although I may be kidding myself, I don't see Stafford's struggles this year as the result of lack of effort. To me it looks like he's completely lost his confidence. At the end of the day it doesn't matter because an unproductive rut is an unproductive rut -- but I think there's a greater chance of him digging himself out of it at some point when he's hustling as opposed to when he's just mailing it in until the puck comes to him in scoring position.

I agree. Other than the OT goal play, Stafford does seem to not be loafing. But I don't think he's working as hard as he should be for loose pucks either.

And I wonder how much of Stafford's funk this season has to do with Derek Roy being here? IYR Staffords goal streaks last season came with Roy on the shelf.

  2. Sounds fantastic! Any idea what they're getting for a bottle?

I've never seen it for sale in the Buffalo area. Haven't seen it at Mahan's in Brockport either. Internet retailers are selling it for around $55-60.

There is a long story about this label. It used to be made at the Stitzle-Weller facility before they closed in the 90's. Buffalo Trace bought the brand and makes it at their facility now. The interesting part is, the 15 and 20yr aged versions of this whiskey are from the old Stitzle-Weller distillery and are getting hard to find. Those bottles go for $100+. The 12 yr aged bottle is all Buffalo Trace though. Premier liquors in Buffalo used to have a couple bottles of the older bourbons in their locked special reserve room. The 20 yr old is legendary for it's richness and complexity.

  3. Tonight's featured libation was Van Winkle "lot B" 12 yr bourbon. I've had a couple Van Winkle labels but this particular one was a first taste. All of the Van Winkle bourbons and ryes that I've had to date have been high quality. This one was no exception.

Van Winkle bourbons are "wheaters", ie. they substitute wheat for rye in the mash. This one was heavy with vanilla character, and spicy yet had a sweet finish. Almost caramel. 90 proof so the sweet was balanced by the alcohol warmth. It had a fruity character that went with the sweet, almost reminded me of marachino cherries. Imagine creme' brulee with the barest hint of sweet cherry. I had mine with 2 small ice cubes that quickly melted. The added water really allowed the whiskey to open up.

This might be the most interesting bourbon I've ever had. It is a touch too rich and sweet for drinking on it's own but as an after dinner drink it is top of the heap. I would imagine it pairs nicely with a big, tough, robust maduro wrapper cigar. A fantastic special occasion tipple.

  4. After work today it's goin out for a burger, $2.50 pints of Sierra Nevada Celebration ale, a couple glasses of Van Winkle rye will get mixed in, then out to listen to an 80's metal cover band. That's a pretty damned good Friday in my book. Getting up at 5:30 tomorrow to intercept Bambii might get problematic.

Oh, and I was just invited to a wild game dinner on Sunday. Venison and goose. My contribution will be bottles of Ommegang Three Philosophers and BPA.

  5. So my latest purchase is a bourbon labeled 1792 aka Ridgemount Reserve. It is Heaven Hill distillate that is barreled and bottled by another company. I kind of avoided it because most of the whiskey at it's price point is underewhelming.

This one is uncomplicated but smooth and at a proof level that pleases the masses. Really, a nice if basic pour that isn't at all objectionable. Easy on the palate and finushes a little sweet. It should be giving Maker's and Beam Black a run for their money.

Bio, add this one to the list of starter bourbons.

BTW, it tastes great 50/50 in eggnog

  6. When I lived in Coconut Grove in Miami, there was a Miami Subs shop that had a bottle on the menu and in the case ready to go. It was great looking at the board and seeing, 6" Turkey $3.99.....Curley Fries $2.39.....Dom Perignon $199.99

I wish I could remember where it was but I've eaten at a place that had a double order of wings and bottle of Dom special for $199.

  7. Pregaming the RIT Hockey game with a bottle of Dom Perignon Vintage 2000 that my buddy won at a golf tournament. It's a good day.

    That's a pretty high-falutin' pregame right there.

My F'N Friday found me finally interviewing a worthy candidate for our open position. Offer goes out Monday. And I'm done interviewing.

  8. Also, I don't think that what I'm about to say is worth starting another thread. Nonetheless, this complaint is the fact that I have been slow to listen to what the Lord has been showing me through His Word - especially with regard to the fact that my wife and I still don't have children (as I have mentioned here before). Both of us have made the mistake of making the assumption that maybe we're doing something wrong or that we would hope that if we did certain things, then maybe God would bless us with a child. Then, as I was pondering Scripture while driving and all of the accounts of childless couples, it finally hit me that God was being glorified throughout all of these accounts, and that He is also getting the glory for us not having children. It really brought me to tears because I was so foolish for not understanding this earlier. I don't expect anyone here to understand what I'm talking about. I just wanted to get this out in the open, given what I've said about the issue in the past.

I understand. And I think it is the correct perspective. Keep on keepin' on.

XChecking, have you ever considered adoption?

If I have any regret in life, it is that I didn't seriously consider adoption when we were young enough that it made sense. We have one healthy, vibrant teenage child. We wanted more. Without going into details, it never happened. We both wish we'd have opened our minds to the idea of adoption back then. Crosschecking, consider adoption. Adopting a child doesn't mean you have to stop hoping for children from your own lineage.

  9. I think they should use rubber bullets and fire hoses on them daily. The rubber bullets to let them know if they were pulling this ###### in China, Russia, Somalia or 160 other countries in the world the bullets would be real, and the fire hoses to wash the stink off these dirty patchouli smelling hippies with nothing better to do with daddy's money now that phish isn't touring.

My complaint is the smell of feces and piss when I walk by a city park. :P

My real b!tch today is that we've been interviewing nearly every day for an open position for 3 weeks now. I have lost all enthusiasm for interviewing. I am more convinced than ever that the downsizing that occurred across all industries was nothing more than a needed weeding out of dead weight. Every, and I mean every, interviewee that isn't working right now looks terrible in their interviews. Ditch diggers shouldn't be in the engineering fields. I anin't got time for this shyte.

  10. This chili turned out awesome. Special ingredients include smuckers peanut butter, Hungarian hot paprika, a 22oz bottle of Rogue Chocolate stout, meatloaf mix (pork, veal, beef), Italian sausage, and Barenjager. Aughhhhhhhhh

Peanut butter, hot paprika, and chocolate notes from the stout? Sounds alot like a Mexican mole sauce. I bet it was tasty.

Sounds like an expensive pot of chili too !!

  11. Can we add in one more detail to that? We need a Running Man type situation where Korab, GoDD, nFreeman, and others hunt down and kill them. This would bring so much more traffic to this website (and a whole new batch of targets for that mystery island).

The Most Dangerous Game without the racist/classist/elitist overtones? Add me to the list.

Not sure where I am watching the game tonight. Probably at home with beer in hand. Plan on some serious barstool time tomorrow. It's my birfday tomorrow and Imma spending it right.

  12. I have not been in Buffalo since 1994, please forgive any misremembering.

I only ever drank whiskey in a cocktail, and that only occasionally when out to dinner, until recently. There was a good restaurant on Kenmore avenue about 4 or 5 blocks east of Delaware that I cannot remember the name of. On the other side of Kenmore avenue (approximately) was Lala that had middle European food (good schnitzels).

One time the restaurant in question lost my reservation and we had to wait at the bar. The restaurant spotted me and my date a free drink while we waited. I had a bourbon Manhattan.

I was at my favorite Raleigh restaurant (Mo's Diner [not really a diner}) about a year ago. I felt like having a cocktail and ordered a bourbon Manhattan. It was great. I asked the waiter about it and he said it was made with Maker's Mark.

I bought a bottle and have been sampling it with water, over ice. I like it.

    Sounds like another convert.

  13. Any luck? I was happy with my handicapping today, and did solid....could have run wild.

The 2yo turf was a little soft for the speed types so sure enough, the Europeans come gobbling at the end. I didn't come close.

The sprint was a perfect trip for my guy....he gutted it out and just lost in the end. I did have a small exacta so I cashed ok.

The turf sprint was just a bad break....by 2 horse get carried out 12 wide. It was over right there that short.

I ate it in the dirt mile. Trappe Shot put in a mild bid, but he burned a lot of my pick-3+ tickets. The winner was exciting though. That's the type of run I was looking for...wrong horse!

I knew something was up in the turf when my pick drifted up to 7-1. If she was on, she would have been bet. Great story though with the winner. 18yo kid gets his first BC ride....for his Dad of all people...and makes an amazing ride to dominate.

Thankfully the Juvenile made my weekend. I was happy to get 7-1, and Hansen set the pace but was able to relax. He dug in big at the end and I got a little lucky with Union Rags going wide. I hammered the exacta and it paid $46. I don't think Hansen has a chance to Win the Derby at this point, but if he stays healthy he is a neat little guy.

Ugh....the mile was an inch away from making me a happy boy. I can't cry for missing a 64-1 shot with the 2 horses I liked. But it killed my multiple race tickets and the excitement I would have had going into the Classic with live five figure tickets. There is no way I would have the winner in the next though.

Drosselmeyer looked beautiful before the race. It was his day. What a trip watching Mike Smith come and beat Chantal Sutherland...his ex-girlfriend. An interesting aside....she is a really cute girl, and her personality is pretty much like Chz, but in real life if she likes you.

I wasn't able to get out until late in the program. Can't say on hit on anything of substance in the couple of races I made it out in time to get in on. I like to start small and get my head into it before really jumping in. Stayed at the Downs for dinner and put some money on the trotters and didn't do very well there either. When the Downs first opened back up we used to get out there almost every weekend and I got pretty good at taking someone else's money home with me. But since they've expanded their purses and started attracting horses from further away we don't get out there nearly as much and I find it much harder to hit on anything of substance now. We aren't big money betters so it ends up being the cost of an evenings entertainment I guess. Now that it is getting colder the race crowds will be lighter. Might have to spend the last few weekends in the racing season doing some "research" for next year. :D
