To think anyone knows Terry Pegula is laughable.  It appears he's a guy that keeps a low profile.  His daughter is one of the best women's tennis players in the world and to my knowledge I've never seen him.  Yet posters know what he's all about,  what he's thinking and how he feels about the Sabres?

Terry has been kicking around Buffalo circles for some time. Well before he bought the Sabres. Jerry Forton's brother-in-law is Terry's business manager in oil and gas. Jerry has always been very plugged in in Buffalo, his wife is an event planner who has been managing all the Jim Kelly and Ryan Miller events for decades.

The relationship goes so far back that I always assumed Jim Kelly's decade long blubbering before Ralph died about "assembling a buying group" was Terry Pegula.

Terry is a trained in oil and gas, not in people management. There is this constant take that he must be good at business, or people, or whatever because he amassed fortune. He amassed fortune by finding natural gas. He has another business partner (not employee, but partner) who manages people, structure, etc.

I agree with this. I don't like coaches who are shouters. I think too many fans equate being loud and punitive with being a good coach. Sort of the "spare the rod and spoil the child" theory of coaching. Bosses like this do not get the best out of their workers.

There is a place for it.

Coaches who make it their whole personality have a pretty short timeline with pretty drastic spikes of improvement then failure.

  3. I don't understand how anybody can say they are not.

The Buffalo Sabres under Terry Pegula are the worst era of hockey for any franchise in the history of the NHL. Literally nobody has ever been worse.

    It isn't close.

It doesn't stop there, the Pegula lead Sabres are amongst the worst run sports teams amongst the big 4 leagues in the US. That isn't hyperbole.

  4. - Enough anger towards the Sabres may spur some additional spending on PSL's for the Bills?

    - The town could use more breweries, I drink more when I am sad, and I am more sad when I watch the Sabres.

    - Maybe we can reduce the fanbase just a little bit more so that the team can start playing in the Harbor Center. That would free up the calendar for KBC to make room for a 10 year Taylor Swift residency.

I think what is alarming is the Buffalo Sabres were at home really needed the win and UPL was awful. I don’t fully trust UPL in the nets to just hand him a huge long term contract which guarantees him the Sabres net for years in my opinion. Go Sabres! Let’s Go Buffalo

They’ve been playing him at a 67 game pace since the new year.

You would have to go back to 2018 to find a goalie who played more than that. There are only 3 between 2018-2024 who have played that much.

It isn’t sustainable for most goaltenders. Let alone one who just found his pro game.

Maybe maybe not but they absolutely will give him something to build on going in to 2024 most importantly the confidence and that it won’t have been 9 months since his last game when we start in October.

I disagree. You want the guy getting back to top form. Getting some NHL games in before the offseason arrives can only help that process.

Under normal circumstances in most sports, including hockey, if a player as a 2 month long injury with surgery they normally don’t go from zero team participation, to 100% practice practice and playing in a game all within 24 hours.

So for me this isn’t just about the last 10 games. It’s the timeline of injury, first practice, 100% practice, to playing in a game. Had Quinn come back two weeks ago and been skating with the team, sure, I get it.

You can’t talk about Quinn playing the last 10 games without talking about the entire timeline. In that context I just don’t see the value for the player.

Every game counts. Pro players - most of them anyway - live and love to train and compete.

The team deserves this level of cynicism, I guess. I just see it as the team welcoming back a top young player who’s fully recovered and ready to play. And, sure, the team will be looking to win as many games/points as possible until there are no games left to play.

It is a huge bummer to consider that another season of mediocrity could somehow justify keeping KA and DG around.

Oh totally, of course JQ wants to skate, compete, and play.

I was mostly responding to the posts that said Quinn was playing because of some legitimate value add to his career. That these games would be somehow impactful to his progression.

    They won’t.

It may and likely will for the player.

8-10 games before a 6 month break from regular season hockey won't make an impact on a player with 94 career NHL games. He may not even feel like he has his legs back underneath him before the season ends.

My quick $0.02 is that this move is to help protect Donnie and Kevyn by trying to see if they can use Quinn to get as close to 91 points more so than they believe they are helping Jack out.

$7M is about right for Tage, especially when he gets back to 40+ goals which I think he will. There is no other 1C on the roster.

There are 32 1C’s in the league, Tage is one of them.  I actually think he may be a better wing in the right situation.

This whole thing started off by me saying that it would be nice if we could somehow acquire 1C and push Tage to the second line. Albeit super unlikely.

You told me that Tage was a true 1C based on pay and ice time. Mitts had the highest TOI of all the centers,  now his pay as the 35th paid center in the league is commensurate with his performance and there is nobody else on the roster?

Did you just come around to moving Tage down the roster?

You said “paid like a 1C”. The “on this team must have been silent” I guess. $7M is dirt cheap for a 1C right now, decent for a 2C, and an overpay for a 3C across the league. But you likely already know that.

Worth noting that until a few weeks ago there was another center on this team that was getting more TOI than Tage Thomson.

Tage is our 1C.  He is paid like a  1C, and he gets 1C minutes.  He is having an injury riddled off year.  Even Gil Perreault had a few.

I disagree with the Tage is not a 1C talk.  What we need is a center good enough to be 2 or 3, another one for 3or 4.  But that would block Krebs so we won’t make those moves.   We have a pipeline filled with centers but most likely non are ready by next season.

I think the talk is Savoie and Kulich project to the wing.

Tages cap hit of $7.14M this year is 35th among all centers across the league. He is not paid like a 1C.

*not a medical doctor, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night*
I am not sure that is how broken bones work. (if that even was what this was - I think some medical professionals here on the board have speculated as much)

I have absolutely no knowledge of the details surrounding Jack Quinn‘s medical condition, but I would like to take time out of my day to tell you why the Sabres are mishandling him…

I don’t need any knowledge surrounding Quinn’s injury to understand that him playing in meaningless games immediately after two consecutive leg issues might not be warranted.

I’m sure they are just looking out for their fans here, giving them some juice for the final twirl around the toilet bowl.

I guess if he’s good to go, let’s throw him out there so fans can cling to what might be, until it isn’t…

    Also not a doctor....

But we see in all sorts of sports, hockey included, that guys generally take a bunch of limited or partial practices after long term injuries before being a 100% participant and even then it isn't uncommon to limit TOI.

Maybe it is fine. But as a fan, compared to what we have seen in the past, it certainly feels like a bit of risk for no tangible reward for the player or the team.

My tinfoil hat says that the org is starting to hear more noise from the remaining Sabres fans and are anxious to save themselves the headache by getting as close to last years 91 points as possible so that Adams stand at the mic and say "we were basically the same as last year, 2 points away from 91 is one game going the other way. I would say we learned and grew more this year than any other"

    Greenway Thompson. Tuch

    JJP Cozens.  Quinn

the top 6 at today practice

are you happy if this is the top 6 going into next year ?

would be cool to get a LW to drop Greenway to the 3rd line BUT then you have an issue with what to do with Skinner.   Yes, I understand his metrics are good 5v5    I just don't think you should have a one dimensional player on your top line, especially when you have the youngest team in league.  Your vets need to set a standard

i would probably want them to switch Benson to 1st line and Greenway to 3rd

skinner Krebs greenway as your 3rd line isn't terrible I don't think

My unpopular opinion is to get a true 1C and move JJP and Quinn up and keep something like Benson/Greenway - Thompson - Tuch as our second line and let Cozens compete for the wing in the top 6.

I also understand real 1C don't grow on trees and the Sabres won't/can't sign one.

I'm not sure how I feel about how badly the Sabres are currently developing players, at least this current regime.  Could they do better? Could/should the have more/better/more experienced assistant coaches and dev coaches? Sure, but I don't think that makes them bad.

Sabres drafted Dahlin. Generational talent (supposedly). Got ice time from his rookie year, didn't look good the first 2 years but had a great year last year (maybe a top 10 D-man in the league) and he had a rocky start to this year, but in the last 2 months looks to be every bit as good now as he was last year.  Maybe you expect him to be great, but I don't think the Sabres 'messed him up'. Samuelsson in the 2nd round that year....he can't stay healthy but when he does play, he certainly is probably as good as anyone drafted in the 2nd round or later.

-2019 Cozens. I was really hard on him late last year and early this year, I thought he may have been the worst player in the NHL regarding coverage in is own zone. But, over the last 2 months he's turned the corner, not only has he been playing better there, but his scoring is coming back.  And from a strong draft class, the only 2 players drafted after him that are out-producing him are Caufield and Boldy (and only by a handful of goals) and he is doing BETTER than Turcotte, Dach, and Kakko, all drafted before him.

-Ryan Johnson. He just got to the Sabes this year, but he has been at all their dev camps and worked with their coaches. I think most poeple on here think he is playing better than they expected he would.

-2020 Quinn.  He has been injured so its hard to rate him, but he had a very good rookie year last year, that was after being a GREAT player in the AHL for his year there, and in his short stint this year, he looked really really good. He has played 94 career games, some of them after coming back from a bad injury, but he is 7th in points per game of anyone drafted that year.

-Peterka.  2nd rounder. Top 10 in scoring for anyone from that draft class overall, 3rd this year in goals scored (and only 3 away from the top spot) from that draft class.  Both Peterka and Quinn are at least average in terms of defensive zone play..I think you can make a case that for their age they are actually pretty good too.

2021. Owen Power.  Top guy in a supposedly 'below average' draft class. But, he played as a rookie, he is playing a ton of minutes now. He has his ups and downs, but again, recently he is playing a lot better. Many may not like his style (he is big but hits vitrually no-one) but I don't think you can see he isn't starting to be an asset on the blue line.

Since then, Benson is a surprise and playing well in the NHL for how young he is.  Savoi, Östlund, Kulich....nothing from them yet but all of them have showed flashes in their current leagues of being legit NHL players at some point.

As far as the older guys, Thompson looked like a Bust until Granato came along, and even with a 'down' year this year, hes on pace for about 30 goals, the last 3 years is close to a 40 goal guy overall.  Tuch, he is getting more chances in Buffalo but his production is way up here compared to Vegas.  It took a while but Mitts developed into a really good NHL forward with this team. UPL certainly, he has 'developed' into one of the better goalies in the league.

So yeah, they could do better, but I look at this roster and I see a lot more 'development' successes than I see failures, especially since the current regime took over.

Roster construction (not having a GOOD veteran D-man here) and player mix might be an issue for this team's current lack of success. But I think player development? A case can be made for them doing a good job...at least not doing a bad job.

This is totally fair, I am not going to die on this hill.

At the same time I look at Ryan Johnson, Peterka, and Quinn compared to somebody like Cozens specifically and I like the formers games a lot more than I like Cozens at the moment. All 4 of the players mentioned are 22 years old, but the 3 I like spent significant time in the AHL/NCAA. Where as Cozens was drafted and a Sabre from day one. We are complaining about his game more than the others and defending it with his age.

Similarly I really like Levi, but he needs more time to bake in the AHL. He still looks too frantic to me.

I don't think the Sabres suck at developing players. There are certainly some great examples. But I do think that the narrative that letting them develop live from day 1 is the best thing for them is overplayed. Just because some guys figure it out doesn't mean it was the best or most efficient developmental process.
