The Sabres are 5 points out with a better goal differential than each team they’d need to leap to get to 8th, with 52 games remaining.

I say the Sabres make the playoffs, sticking with my preseason prediction.

(Ignore earlier in thread where I said they certainly were not eliminated but that it appeared unlikely - I was high)

This is where I am at. November really sucked. We have lost a bit of the safety net to fall into any ruts going forward. But our scoring and goal differential are way too high to talk about missing the playoffs before the new year.

I am with you on this, I think the Sabres chip away at the hole they dug for themselves in November and find themselves in it come April.

If we can split Detroit, Vegas, Boston, and Tampa, that would be a big way to end the calendar year.

I think maybe the title of this thread causes a lot of disagreement. The word "anything" and it's implication that he has done "nothing" are obviously too absolute and extreme and thus easily argued against.

Yes, picking up Jost is "something" and signing Anderson is also "something" but the real point of contention is whether or not he is doing enough or if he is missing opportunities because really picking up Jost off waivers is a pretty low bar for accomplishments.

The real title I think should be: Is Kevyn Adams doing enough?

    Great points.

I think Kevyn Adams is better than our GM's the last decade. But I am unsure if he is good enough to get us over the hump. We are scoring a million goals per night, imagine the conversations around this team with Shesterkin. Adams certainly has a window to strike at the moment.

So much conversation in this thread about next year, at the risk of sounding too shortsighted, what about this year? Certainly you want to make the right move, not just any move. And I am not sold on Demko at the moment. But also...we are scoring in bunches and missing the playoffs would be a disappointment.

    Welcome Mango !!

I love Mangos.  Reminds me of my youth when I used to tavel to the Islands and would eat a lot of them.  So much so that I often ended up with Mangoria.

    Thank you my guy!

I have been a long time lurker and regular poster on TBD. My screen name is one of the laziest things I have ever done, a total brain fart and picked my favorite fruit. Ha!

There's 53 games remaining in the regular season. There is no verge yet.

That is fair. Poor wording. It is wild that there is even a scenario where the highest scoring team in the league misses the playoffs.

And therein lies the issue.  Those who believe it was as an important a priority and what the organization actually planned for. But then again, the trick is identifying which goaltender would have been the Sabres savior.  People tend to look at the positivity of this season and forget that even a year ago, or two years ago, and certainly three.. the Sabres were not a place where players would choose to go.  We still debate whether players want to come here today.

So.. who are they getting without overpaying.. and if they overpay, what impacts does that have on the current situation?

I think 2-3 year ago this org was a dumpster fire. Now we’re the highest scoring team in the NHL. The situation in Buffalo is different today. 500 days ago, no quality goaltender is coming here.

Today though…This is likely a more attractive team than it used to be. By that metric Adams has been an improvement. But I’m. It sure if he’s been good enough. Like other posters have said, how we handle the goalie position, what we give up, and how it pans out will define Kevyn Adams in Buffalo.

I don't want to start an unrelated war with the comments I'm about to make but here goes:  I know a few people that I talk to about the Sabres that say similar things. Root for Eichel (almost more than the Sabres), think the Risto trade was bad...The team got fleeced in the ROR/Tage trade no matter what happens going forward, the team will never win because they are soft...need players like Ramsey, Shoenfeld, Korab (because they were REAL players) etc, etc.   All of them have a couple things in common....they are all over 55 years old, they all will die on the hill that in EVERY sport Defense wins championships all the time, and if anyone scores more than 1 goal in a game against you or throws more than 2 td passes against you the only solution is to hit them hard over and over and over to 'teach them a lesson'.

This is hilariously accurate. Also in the same group text is my uncle who no Schitts creek said "When I played, I loved playing soft teams like the Sabres". Like dude, you are over 50, whose hockey career was Williamsville North. Lets calm down.

The team isn't perfect. But for the first time in a long time, in what feels like a decade, the Sabres are playing a brand of hockey that I enjoy watching. They're incredibly elite at scoring, but deficient at goaltender. They're a relevant team in the NHL. Hockey is fun in Buffalo again.

Last year, folks were pleasantly surprised by Tage's development and debated whether he was a 2 or 3C. Today, no one with a brain would trade him straight up for Eichel. I'll add that last year, or maybe even earlier this year, folks liked Cozens, but didn't think he would consistently score. Now the kids' line is a legit second line and bring a dangerous energy every time they step on the ice. We're a couple of solid veteran D and consistent goaltending away from a genuinely scary team.

I was just having a conversation in a group text today.

My dad has basically broken up with the Sabres and spends his days hoping that Jack Eichel will someday hold his hand. He talks about Kevyn Adams like he has been in charge for 12 years and what a dumbed down roster it was and listed Risto, O'Reily, Nylander as examples of things Adams got wrong.  Like dude, none of those guys have anything to do with Adams. We are the highest scoring team in the league. We have a top tier power play. The team is young, and exciting. We are one more d-line and a goaltender from being a team nobody wants anything to do with.

I told him I would gladly take all his Sabres gear on trade and I would buy him an Eichel/Vegas jersey in return.

Can you  show us what you read that shows the Sabres are doing the things in bold above.  Where are you getting this information?   The only thing I’ve read (and heard from Adams)  so far is that the Sabres doctor’s recommendation was rest and rehab with another evaluation in early June.  What facts do you have that suggest the Sabres are holding contractual clauses over Eichel’s  head?

I’ll be the first to admit the Sabres have been “Busch League”  in many facets of how they run this team.  I just don’t know if it applies to Eichel’s injury and his contract.

This entire thing is about the Sabres denying Eichels request for surgery. Eichel wanted to have it. The Sabres said no. This meeting is about Jack’s progress after taking the approach forced on him by the organization.

  8. 49 minutes ago, Pimlach said:

There is a lot to meet on.  He time table for rest is up and he needs to be re-evaluated, the team has every right to be part of that.

The team needs to discuss where he is at mentally, based on his year end interview they really do need to keep in contact and decide if he has a place here - remember Adams said they want people that want to be here.

The Sabres do not look Busch league.  They are doing what they should be doing.  Adams played for 11 years, this is one area of the job that he should be comfortable with - open and honest communication with a player is good.

You want to change the culture?   Then the FO needs to be engaged and transparent with all players.  Like the Bills are.

If the Sabres want to change the culture, they need to not threaten to void a contract based on differences in opinion on medical care. That’s where the Sabres look Busch League.

    It is really that simple.

They should be involved in Jack’s mental, emotional, and physical health. Of course. It will be difficult for them to take a step back from their previous flex and focus and focus on general maintenance and care.

In regards to Adam’s. I don’t know. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt and not heap all my Pegula baggage on the guy. But the team has been an embarrassment for nearly a decade from ownership down. And promoting your VP of Business Development to your GM feels like a bad move even though he played in the league. He also seems to have a giant hole in his resume from assistant coach in Buffalo to VP of BD. Like what did he do for those 6 or 7 years? Was he a scout?

I would argue that pulling the “it’s in your contract that we can control this decision regarding medical procedure, otherwise your contract can be voided” card, for what seems like the first time in the history of the big 4 in the US, would indicate that this sort decision isn’t in his wheel house.

Eichel’s biggest risk is if he gets the surgery done without the Sabres Permission and gets to the point where he is unable to play due to His Herinated Disk, the Sabres can at that point terminate the reminder of His Deal

This is fair and have no issue with it. My issue is it feels like the Sabres led with that point and it has tainted the waters.

They can not stop him from getting any procedure.  However if he gets something done against the advice of the team, it’s in violation of his contract and could be grounds for to void the remainder of the contract.  It’s not enforceable from the standpoint that they can legally bar him from doing something, but the consequences could be cancellation of the contract.

But I think you are missing the point of the meeting.  The meeting is to decide what to do next based upon the test results from after this 12 week rest/rehab period.  Neither side knows what those results are yet.

    Right. I get that.

It’s not the point to the meeting, but it is the point of the overall process.

Has any big 4 league ever voided a contract for their star player (or any player for that matter) for differences in medical care? None of the top of my head or a quick google.

Ultimately think even threatening control over a medical decision will have severe repercussions for the next few years. If I’m a player on the roster there is no way I sign an extension with an organization even threatening that decision. Especially one that’s been trash for a decade.

There is a MSG Go App, but unfortunately it only works if you subscribe to a provider that carries MSG.

It’s appears that ESPN Plus will be taking over for NHL TV so a large majority of out of local viewing area  games should be available on that.

Right. Last I checked though it wasn’t on fire stick. I have a log in, because I go the man, amirite?

I don’t know. Honestly the product has been so bad for so long. The Bills were easy during the drought/ Basically the same day and same time for 16 weeks, then done.

But 82 games at different days and times to keep track of, and plugging my computer into my TV. Meh. I’m a hockey fan, so I’m watching the playoffs and what not. But the Sabres aren’t worth more than going back and watching highlights and scoreboard watching.  If I sit down at night and there’s a reasonable game, I’ll tune in but the Sabres have killed any desire I’ve had to proactively keep track of them specifically.

I really never thought I’d get to this place with any Buffalo sports team in my life. But here we are.

  11. What there to meet on? I mean honestly, I get the CBA gives ultimate medical power to the teams. But I highly doubt that’s enforceable, like at all. Politics aside, I can’t put in a prenup that my SO has to get an abortion if they get pregnant. Asking for a permit to protest isn’t an enforceable crime, etc.

If Jack wants the surgery. Jack gets the surgery. I gotta think the Sabres just look Busch league here.
