  1. It feels like we’re 8 minutes into this game and Girgs - Thompson - Tuch have already played 4 minutes.

For a GM who has been here for 4 years I don’t understand how we can only have one defensive pairing and one line.

Anybody going to get the man out of the effing crease. Jesus Christ. Dahlin gave him a poke and skated away letting him have his way with UPL.

I guess it is just that Ruff was fired this year for pretty much the same reasons that many want to see Granato fired.  It isn't that he failed to get past round one or two of the playoffs, but rather that he oversaw a regular season disaster. If we make a move (and I doubt we will), there will be coaches available whose recent records are considerably better than Ruff's.

There the NHL coaching pool . Then there’s the pool of coaches that Terry is willing to hire, and even within that group there are the coaches that would agree to coach for Terry.

    The overlap is not significant.

I think part of the reason there’s some buzz around Lindy is because he may be one of the better candidates willing to come here and who Terry would hire.

If this is true, it is actually kind of staggering. From what I know, most countries now teach you to have your dominant hand on top - so either natural lefties (who would play righty in this scenario) tend to be FAR better at hockey or there are still quite a few kids out there still opting for shot power over control.

*Google tells me only ~10% of the world is naturally left-handed, so if everyone played with their dominant hand on top, you would expect the NHL to be like 90% lefties ...

I should have specified shoot left handed.

Rochester only has 1 right shot F? Lol crazy

Dude, I had to go back and keep scrolling through to make sure. It didn't seem real.

Even now to grab the link and share it I had to scroll through and double back. It feels like it cannot be correct but it is. Justin Richards is the only one.

On a real note I am curious how many of our turnovers happen to/from a LH player on the right side. Specifically the stuff deep in our own end.

Probably looks worse if we were relying on a guy who turned out to be near the end of his rope as an NHLer haha

I am also left handed. Born on national left handers day

There are 3 RHF (Quinn is out) and 2 RHD  in Buffalo and 1RHF and 4RHD in Rochester. However that Rochester number could drop to 3 depending on what the move is with Sjalin. Also all 5 goalies between both clubs shoot left.

I don't know why I find it so hilarious. But I am rooting for more lefties and less righties at this point. Get out of here Tuch, Thompson, Cozens, Joker, and Clifton!

On a more serious note the league average for left handed players hovers around 60%. The Sabres are around ~80%. There is a legitimate concern about the ability moving the puck around efficiently when so many guys are constantly having to reposition or take/give passes off the backhand.

    So we’ve acquired a 7th, a 4th, and a leadership void so far

At this point just make Brandon Beane president of the world and let him make the picks.

Ties are not considered in "winning" percentage.  It is based on WINS.

I understand, compare those teams to the one that is on the ice now.  Which one would you choose?

I was just typing a response to this but you beat me to it.

I overlooked ties because it has been 20 years since there has been a tie in the NHL and I am a dummy and accidentally left them out. My bad. But it still isn't close.

    Lindy's numbers are:
    Regular Season W% All: .490
    Regular Season W% (97-04 T era): .440
    Regular Season P%  (97-04 T era): .508
    Regular Season W% (04-13 OTL era): .538
    Regular Season P% (04-13 OTL era): .594
    Playoff W%: .564
    Regular Season P% All: .560

    Meatballs numbers are:
    Regular Season W% All: .437
    Playoff W%: .000
    Regular Season P% All: .488

For reference if you took last season Sabres and increased their....
-W% by .053 (total difference) would be 3rd in the division and leap frog both Tampa, NYI and Florida.
    - W% by  .101 (difference era to era) we would have the same wins as Toronto but lose the 2 seed because of OTL.
    - P% by .072 (total difference) we would be tied for the 8th seed with Florida.
    - P% by  .106 (difference era to era) we would jump bother Florida and NYI

Mind you this is adjusting the best year Don Granato has ever had to Lindy Ruff's average performance. The only place that Meatballs and Lindy are similar is an era of hockey where the rules of the game (standings) were totally different.

This is exactly why comparing W% 's between era's where 100% of games get 2 points and a winner to another era where 10-15% of games end without a winner/2 points at all. There is a reason that historically hockey coaches are not sorted by W%.

I copyied the info from Hockeydb.  Winning percentage = Games Won divided by Games Played.  It is in the spreadsheet and can compare to Hockedb.

Why is it so hard to think DG and Lindy have the a similar wining percentage?  Dg's numberes will change alot because of the small sample size.  As a wise person told me, perception and reality are two different things.  That is why we have data.

    Dooooooood.

How can you look two records where one coach won more games than the lost and the other coach lost more games than they won and go "Seeeeeee they have the same win percentage".

    Lindy: 571-510 (571 wins/1081 games), W% .528
    Meatballs: 112-144, (112win/256 games) W% .437

For W% you have to move OTL to L. Otherwise you have to use P%.

I don't know what you did, but you didn't math properly....like at all. They don't have the same W% or the same P% and it isn't particularly close.

Interestingly, DG and LR have similar winning percentages in Buffalo.

    Lindy is 571-432-78 in Buffalo with a .560 P%.

***** Ranato is 112-118-26 with a .488 P%. His best season is .555. His career year is worse than Ruff's average year.

I think there is a chance that you just made this up.

EDIT: Aparently D-O-N-G Ranato gets censored. What a bummer. Such a great opportunity there.

There may be merit to the idea they need to learn from someone with legit experience, but with such an overkill of youth they struggle to relate to older players. Maybe they do need a Byram.

“There’s a dude bro we can trust.”

Imo, under this line of thinking I don’t understand how Granato could still be here, for a team in such need of experience. Maybe they think a vet coach would be tuned out

It feels like it is almost mite hockey like....

"Ok when the puck is in the right corner LW you go here, C you go there, RD stand at the blue line along the boards. Now if it is in the right corner, everybody do the opposite."

His numbers apparently torpedoed on the right

To this point lets not forget the Owen Power gets a lot of protection from this staff. When Ryan Johnson first came in they said that he would not be getting work on the PP because we already have Dahlin and Power. So if Byram struggles on the right side I don't anticipate any/many adjustments being made to get him on the left.

    Quote

"He could be running our power play, easily, because he’s got more than enough skill to do it. And he could run a power play in Rochester, but that isn’t his path to the NHL, because we have Dahlin and Power. They’re going to be running it for a long time. So it’s going to be being an elite defender, being a transitional puck-moving defenseman, and getting us on offense 5-on-5 and being a strong penalty killer," said Appert.

This came from Appert, but would be shocked if Appert unilaterally made the decision not to play RJ on PP and then tell the media that it was because of the big club. That is a plan that 100% comes from the GM/HC.

The Montreal Expos of the NHL.

How does one reach Danny Wegman and ask him to buy this team from Terry?

Like can we pull a boat up to his place on Canandaigua and drop a nice hand written note? If we can enough signatures on a petition can he be legally obligated to buy the team? Secretly replace all the "Josh Jaq's" with "Domin-O's" at all the WNY Wegmans? Crowdfund a billboard?

Does Ryan Reynolds still want a hockey team? Can we get Rachel Bush or somebody to tweet him and ask?

I guess I'm almost alone in this, but I'm looking forward to seeing Byram play when he suits up.  Makes me want to watch the games a bit more than if no moves were made.

Fair point, but for more color does this trade make you want to watch the Sabres more on Thursday/Saturday? Next October? 365 days from today?

Because if it get you to watch the game this weekend, but not next season, this is really bad value.

But they didn't even approach his agent.  ASK him and let him tell you no, don't just assume he won't be happy.

    breaking bad bullshit GIF

Also if Dylan Cozens is making and was offered more than Casey Mittlestadt then that isn't a Casey Mittlesadt problem. That is a player (e)valuation problem.

2 years ago Casey was my most frustrating player and the last 18 months he has become my favorite and this teams best forward.

If Dylan Cozens is struggling heavily with the pressure to perform relative to his contract extension, the pressure just increased on the kid.....BY A LOT. Because that is the measuring stick, his contract is why we moved on from Mitts. And if he doesn't surpass Mitts game in the next season or two he is going to find himself struggling in this town.

    WTF is the plan here?

Casey has been our best center by some margin and it seems as though we traded him for our 5th LHD who might become the 4th guy on the depth chart?

When Adams said he would negotiate Mitts contract after the season/deadline but "had to listen to offers" I knew he was as good as gone. But I was hoping for reasonable return.

The population is not dropping fast. It even appears to be ticking up after a decade of very modest declines year by year. Same for Erie Co. It's not the 70s and 80s anymore.

Not to derail the thread, but the region has been losing population for decade until recently. The 90's weren't good and nearly were the early aughts or even the 2010's for that matter.

Some things are getting better for some people. But all in all the city is still is in rough shape. Child poverty is an important number to watch. Buffalo is still at 40%+ and they have been for decades. This is nearly triple the national average and over double the state average. This is an important number to watch for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that class stratification is rare in the US.

Yes it happens. Sure it is worse in other countries.

But the numbers around class stratification relative to your parents are super similar to height. It is just as unlikely in the US to have two parents at 5'8 and be 6'0+ as it is to grow up on public assistance and make it to the middle class.

There is a larger macro conversation to be had for sure. But ultimately until this number is substantially reduced I refuse to believe that there is any real Buffalo renaissance. You cannot have that many children living in poverty for decades upon decades.

It doesn't bother me anymore that athletes make a lot of money.  They are part of an entity that brings in a certain amount of money and they receive their part based on their value to the team paying them.

Kind of like Actors/Actresses.  I had friends and family that would say they're not going to the movies anymore because they're sick of how they act and they aren't supporting that anymore.  Then I mentioned look, you're not paying them millions, you're paying $13 for them to entertain you.  Put it into context.

BTW, what athletes go through is actually quite brutal.  You complain about Von, yet if you think for just a minute about what happened to him and what how difficult that was, to then hurry up and get back on the field, it's not for normal people.

Being CEO should pay a lot. Being CEO of a company that brings in $6,000 per year in revenue pays a pack of gum.

Athletes are the product. They are the iPhone, the SUV, the paint you use in your living room. They make a portion of the revenue they create. $40M a year for throwing a football for 10 years is a lot. $40M because you are directly responsible for a 35% increase in revenue at a company worth $4B is reasonable value.
