  1. Barring fast, skilled, wingers dropping from the sky; Vanek is probably our safest bet to sign if we want production on the cheap and short term kind.

And I really wouldn't be putting him with Eichel, I'd put him with ROR (to cover his D problems) or Middlestadt (to give him a vet and allow a youngster RW to fit a bit better)

But most of all I'd want him for powerplay purposes. With dual Rasmus, we need two sets of PP units nowadays and we lack a net front presence on our 2nd PP unit.

Lastly, push comes to shove, Vanek - Middlestadt - Pominville at least sounds cool......... and it would be sort of cool to have those two finish in the same spot they started, on the 3rd line. Thouhg to be honest I just want Pommers on the 4th line or press box but injuries do happen.....

  2. I get the sense that the reason for the Season Ticket Holder limit on the tournament is to prevent what happened when Eichel was drafted where they almost filled Key Bank Arena. Why they don't host the tournament I'm unsure of, but if the tournament was free for all there's a good chance 6,000 + people would flood the HarborCenter and they'd have to turn people away. I'll be pissed if I can't stream it but I do understand somewhat why they are doing it.

  3. There's a book called Counsel in the Crease by Robert O. Swados.  Swados was a lawyer to the Knoxes and a minor part of the ownership group.  He had a good view of a lot of what was going on in Buffalo sports in the 1960s.  I've heard his account is very slanted (and you can see where he builds his own contribution to the team up, probably beyond the reality), but I still found it an interesting read.  He spoke of the California Seals as well, and the part the Knoxes had in that team prior to getting the Sabres franchise.

If I recall correctly, they also tried to bring in Major League Baseball and were even told informally that they had been awarded a franchise.  At the official announcement though, the Montreal Expos were announced instead.

There's a lot of politics involved in sports.

That's really interesting, especially seeing as our ballpark was built for an MLB team and we almost acquired the Giants in the 80's and a expansion team in the early 90's.

  4. I wouldn't trade ROR, but especially to Montreal where almost anything we'd receive would pale in comparison to what ROR would give Montreal. They remind a bit of the 2010/11 Sabres in that they have a great goalie, some nice pieces, but 0 centers. ROR would give them that and I am not looking to help my rivals.

Unless MTL's 1st, Galchenyuk, and Mete are all coming our way that is. A center's impact outweighs almost anything they can offer.

  5. I'm becoming more serious. ROR and Nylander for Gaudreau and Bennett.

Bennett and Nylander are a wash in my eye and you are taking their broken prospect in exchange for your own and you hope you get lucky.

Hmm, it's definitely a offense for defense style trade.

What if we combine that with Dubinsky(1,850,000mil retained) and Boone Jenner for Fasching and a 3rd in 2019.  After all Dubinsky fell off a truck last year but I'd think he'd still be an effective 3rd line C and Jenner could be Eichel's winger where Gaudreau would be with Mittelstadt and Okposo

I'm also ridding us of Larsson, and Beaulieu

    So.....

    Jenner - Eichel - Reinhart

    Gaudreau - Mitts - Okposo

    Bennett - Dubinsky - ERod

    Wilson - Girgs - Baptiste

Pommers and Bailey are the extras

  6. They are virtually identical offensively, and Brodin is slightly better at defense. I have no reason to believe we wouldn't think just the opposite had we traded for Brodin rather than Scandella last summer, because that's what we fans do.

But we didn't, because the price was higher for Brodin than it was for Scandella.

Brodin is also on a better team offensively so his offensive numbers were easier to achieve.

  7. He's been a 3 on a good Minnesota team for a while, as Dumba only broke out this season, and he's better than Scandella.

I’d say he’s a 3/4 and around equal to Scandella to be honest. Borodin is a great dman but brings very little outside of dzone play whereas Scandella is a bit more well rounded.

Hence my offer, I’m looking for him more to be Dahlin or Risto’s defensively minded partner. He’s a better Pysyk

  8. Brodin's a guy that costs a big piece, not a bunch of crap.

I wouldn't say Nylander, McCabe, and a 2019 2nd are crap, and neither is the cap space.

We may be down on Nylander but he was the 8th overall pick 2 years ago and his value is still high to some teams I'd imagine based on his bloodline alone.

Plus I based it off a trade I saw elsewhere just with Spurgeon instead of Brodin.

  9. Would anyone be interested in taking a flyer on Brandon Saad, had his worst year of his career last year but is still younger than ROR and can play LW. Plus he has 2 cup rings.

I did Bailey and Beaulieu for Saad since we take on 3x6mil but I'm really unsure of his value at this time.

  10. Datsyuks contract got traded, so did Prongers and Clarkson's..... this guys were not even playing at the time. Moulson and Bogo are at least live breathing hockey players. He'll need to get creative like those other GMs, but that might asking to much of his influence as a rookie GM unfortunately.

Pronger, Clarkson and Datsyuk would disagree.

Moulson will have contributed nothing to this team for the past 2 seasons, same with Bogo, and to the tune of $20m in cap hit.

JBOTs should've gotten creative with Vegas to get them to take Bogo (Moulson wouldn't waive his NMC) but instead of moving he ignored history and it was repeated.

For starters, Pronger, Clarkson and Datsyuk were either on LTIR or whatever Arizona did to save their roster spot with Datsyuk. This allowed the team picking up the contract to not have to worry about roster space and rather merely the temporary cap implications. Moulson and Bogo aren't in either category, their cap isn't going to be able to be made disappear.

The Pronger trade to Arizona was the least costly as Pronger's 1 mil in total salary over 2 years, with a 4+ mil cap hit, was useful to Arizona's cheap owner. Additionally they sent away Sam Gagner;s contract which they had been tempted to buyout, and received Nicklas Grossmann for a conditional 4th/3rd.

The Clarkson trades are on the opposite end of the spectrum as both trades had more of an impact. First Toronto sent him to CBJ for Nathan Horton (LTIR Guy) meaning while they gave themselves potential cap space, they would still need to get under the cap at the season's start. The second trade was CBJ with Vegas, and they gave up a 2017 1st and a 2019 2nd. However, he too is now an LTIR member.

Lastly we have Datsyuk's awkward  departure in which had a strangely interesting result as Detroit somehow received another pick in the trade while moving down 4 spots. That being said Arizona got the best player of the draft picks.....

Bogosian actually has a higher salary than his cap hit thus Arizona would be unlikely to be interested in him while Moulson has 1 year left on his contract an would be a waste to spend assets to remove 4 mil when we really don't need it.

  11. Sabresbillsfan has been a member of this community for nine years and contributed over 2200 posts. The city he relocated to received an expansion team that he adopted as his second team so many of you want him to go away? Really?

To be honest, I’m not fond of what he has said to us.

    1. He’s going after us Sabres fans for being sour over the Golden Knights.

    2. His put downs on the Sabres franchise, while partially true, came off as we were the idiots for staying loyal to the Sabres and that somehow we had a part in that.

  12. I kept an eye on it but besides ROR, none of our big named players are in it and the US never gets far in the tournament anyway. This year they only lost once in the early games, but then get bludgeoned by Sweden without as much as a peep from the US team aside from Kane....

    Congrats Sweden, kick Canada's ass!

  13. Per McKenzie on TSN Radio the Canes are listening on any Defenseman. He feels it’s less likely they move Pesce or Slavin as they just signed Team Friendly Deals. Hanifin and Faulk are a different story.

    Slavin - Interested

    Pesce - Interested

    Haniifin - Interested

    Faulk - Not really
