  1. Seeing as Malkin's extension kicks in next year and pays $9.5MM per, I don't think Stamkos would get 12 easy. You're clearly excited about Callahan, but let's try to stay a little grounded here :)

You dont think the best scoring winger in the NHL would get the max deal? What world do you live in? Parise got it.......

    You hope/assume/Pray

    No you analyze/predict/project......

  2. At this moment maybe, if the deal is short term. But do you really think that in 3-5 years paying $7 mil to a guy thats hurt alot before reaching 30 isn't going to hurt them when they are trying to contend and have guys on rookie deals now looking for new deals?

it wont hurt them in the least! It will be an even better deal when the cap hits 100m. It is only going up. That deal will look like a steal in 2-3 years.

This deal we are talking is jordan staal money. Which is right where he belongs.

  3. I agree. That is elite scorer money and Callahan certainly isn't that. He is a very good player, but I have to wonder why the Rangers will let him walk if he is so valuable...

I think it is safe to say Ville will be bought out at the end of the year and I'm hoping Miller and Moulson bring back a couple of young forwards to add to the mix next year.

no it isnt. It was elite scoring money three years ago. Have you seen the number of guys making 7million a year? Honest if it is 7 for 7 it would be a deal. In three more years there are going to be like 100+ players making over 7 a year.

It's an absurd amount of money for a 3rd line winger to provide leadership. A contract like that will kill us down the road if we become a contender and have a 34 winger who is a checking line player make $7M and you need to add a piece.

We can get quality veteran leadership without significantly overpaying for a deteriorating player

A contract like that will be a bargain down the road. That is why he knows he is going to get it. there are nearly 50 players currently making over 6 million dollars a year. In three to four years the number of players making over 7 million dollars will be 100+

  4. No. He provides what Drury provided. He is exactly the kind of guy you want on a team full of (hopefully) talented kids.

It's not all about the stats.

    Exactly!

Please don't let this turn into one of those tired "buffalo sucks, no one will ever want to come here" threads.

He'll come if his priorities and GMTM's priorities are a good match. If they aren't, he won't.

That's how free agency works. It's very particular to the player involved and we can't get inside his head.

Ott and Callahan are very similar, if Ott could score 20 goals and 50 points.

Yeah I want an Ott Foligno Callahan third line checking scoring shutdown line

  5. I dont think it would be wise to give Callahan $6M+ for a 7 year deal, which is what hes asking. The guy is a grinder with a career high 54points. He doesnt stay healthy and doesn't address the inability to score.

I would certainly hesitate to give out a contract that will hamper this team in the long term. He's a third line player with the Rangers already, and is only playing 17 mins a game.

Honestly making 4m a year in Buffalo is like making 50 million a year in NYC

  6. Minnesota maybe, but I'm not sure of the rest. Good list, though. In the end, we'll have to wait and see who makes it to at least the conference finals. I don't hate Cody. I still think he's young and hasn't hit his ceiling yet. I just think we need to reach higher if we really want to win the cup.

That's my point. If you can't win it with them, how the F### were you going to win it with Roy and Connolly.

HUH? so they didnt win it with them so its not possible? You dont need two elite centers to win the cup. It has been proven over the years the Bruins being the most recent example.

  7. I dont believe this at all. I also would like to know where you got the info to compile that.

    check out my website, http://www.limedata.us/1.php

it's last years charts. the chart shows the 5-5 time of the average power play time of your opponent forwards (the Y), and the average PK time for your opponent defenseman(the X). If you look at Buffalo, Regehr, in 5-5 time, saw the highest average PP time by opponents, Pomminstein second, Sekera third. If you look along the X axis Pom, Hodgson, and Vanek saw the defensemen who most played the PK

The size of the circle, along with the color, indicates plusminus

Cant see that at work but obviously the top forward line would see the top D pair most of the time.......

Again when we were good the Drury Hecht Grier line was the shutdown "third line" who were kind of billed as our second line. However it was the RAV line that was our scoring second line.

  8. So looking at Chicago's player usage from last year. Their "top line" it is hard to determine which one they choose as their top line but they do often get paired with the other teams top line but Toews starts in the offensive zone against them 65 percent of the time.

to my eye, Hodgson projects to be good enough to play top-6 minutes as a centerman on a very good NHL team.

that's more than enough for me.

i'm not against moving him, but i'm perfectly fine with him being one of the pieces around which the team looks to build.

to a team that was dressing more than 2 NHL defensemen.

Which is what started of defense first mentality hat has resulted in having 15 projected starting defensemen on the roster and in the system lol

  9. Minnesota - Charlie Coyle

    Tampa Bay - Tyler Johnson

    Anaheim - Mathieu Perreault

    St Louis - Patrik Berglund

    Chicago - Bandon Pirri

So 5 out of top 10 teams. The other five teams are rare, and possess unusually good centremen.

    Pens - Crosby and Malkin

    Boston - Krejci and Bergeron

San Jose - Thornton and Marleau

    Colorado - Duchenne and Mackinnon

    LA - Kopitar and Richards

It is also of note that 80% of those centres who are better than Hodgson are also older than him by a few years

I would say Duchenne Mackinnon Richards Kopitar and the Boston Centers are just about even pushes at this point in time. Mackinnon and Duchenne I expect to get slightly better than Hodson and the rest I think Cody will pass in the next two years. I also dont even think the argument would be close if we werent so historically terrible at scoring goals

The Pens have two of the best centres in the history of the NHL and they have lost every year but one

    FTFY

I also bet that those two combined are probably in the top 5 all time for centers on the same team....

  10. Most teams play their top line center against the opponents top line center. Exceptions I found last year were Colorado and Toronto. I have not made my charts this year to answer about this year.

My theory on this is that is really screws up your salary structure if you play third line to first line. A good example last year was Grabovski was undervalued because he was on the third line playing against first liners. Additionally, Kadri gets a nice contract because he an Lupel face easy competition

But you are not alone in believing this, Dark 4 will be by soon to call me nuts.

I dont believe this at all. I also would like to know where you got the info to compile that.

  11. I just think of it this way, look at the teams that are going make deep runs into the playoffs this year. What centers on the first two lines of those teams would you replace Hodgson with to make them better or the same?

I thought the goal was to win the Stanley cup? Who cares about the 13-30 first line centers?

Honestly? You wanna do this? I will look it up quick and put together a list of current playoff teams centers... Gimme a minute

Never mind. This will take way too long. However, Hodgson is easily a second or first line center on a playoff team. There isnt really even a debate. Every single GM in the league would love to have a young center that produces the way that Hodgson does.

  12. The age old debate of a one dimensional player compared to a player that can bring more to the rink than just offense.

You would think there would be a greater disparity when it comes to offense considering it's all Hodgson has to offer.

They had a great conversation on Hodgson on WGR yesterday and pretty much nailed it on the head. Hodgson is a third line center who will get power play time. He is far too poor a defender which causes a huge mismatch for the Sabres when Hodgson plays against top line centers.

Huh???? Your top line center shouldnt be playing against top line centers.... they should be playing against the third line...... Your third line center is the guy who should be defensively minded going up against top lines.....

  13. Theoretically, yes. In reality, I'm not so sure. Maybe Stafford or Ennis but after that its really two categories. 1) players I wouldn't trade (Myers, Gus, Hodgson, Pysyk, Risto, Z)

    2) players no one would trade for (Ellis, Flynn, Scott, McCormick, Konopka)

I don't see how a rental gets him but what do I know

That is what the reports say. Heatley a first and coyle or granlund.

  14. Yep and that same year John Tavares went 1st overall and Jacob Josefson went 20th. Josefson is 6 months younger though. I'm sure you could find a million examples of younger player x ending up a better prosepect than older player y. You could also find a million the other way. If the two players are very close then yes I will take that into account but I don't think it's a huge factor or you will see year in and year out the youngest guys being taken 1st overall and turning into the best players of the class.

And Monaghan was one of the older players in the draft last year and although I haven't checked lately, he's been having a great rookie season. What's your point?

I do understand what you are saying but these players are scrutinized day in and day out by scouts looking for potential. I get it if it's really close but I'm not going out of my way to talk myself into somebody due to the less than a year age gap.

My example wasnt the best. However we are tlaking about two guys that are incredibly close and going with the younger guy. Tavares was in a class by himself there wasnt anyone close to him.

  15. You want us to pick forwards with every draft pick we have? I would love to pick up thatcher Demko this draft.

    Gosh that would be awesome!

Also if Darcy taught us anything it is to not go one position heavy! We lose defensemen in the playoffs and dont have many good ones on the farm and waht happens all we take is good defensemen for what seems like forever. Now we have 7 guys on the team or in the system who are supposed to be top pairing d men in the next 2-3 years. Meanwhile we only have 3-4 forward prospects who look like they will be in the top 6 one day. IT HAS TO BE BALANCED!

  16. Look at Zadorov. Younger than Ristolainen and Jones by about 7 months. Seems to be catching up to both rather quickly.

When you have such a slight distinction in talent from Reinhart to Bennett it is of the utmost importance. Think about it. 7 months of growth for a 17-18yr old. I remember I grew 2 inches my senior year of high school where I went from 17-18. If a younger player is playing to the level of an older player and has shown more improvement over the course of the season, I would be more apt to take the younger player because he has more room to grow and succeed. This of course is my personal philosophy.

Why? Why take Draisaitl when I can take Dal Colle and get a better player with just as much upside who fills the power winger void.

I was a late bloomer. So hopefully one of these guys is like me. I weighed 180 pounds in the eighth grade at about 5'5''. I also weighed 180 pounds as a Senior but I was 6'2''.
